Josué 2

1 Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir secrètement de Sittim deux espions, en leur disant: Allez, examinez le pays, et en particulier Jéricho. Ils partirent, et ils arrivèrent dans la maison d’une prostituée, qui se nommait Rahab, et ils y couchèrent.

Then Ioshua the sonne of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spie secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and also Iericho: and they went, and came into an harlots house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

2 On dit au roi de Jéricho: Voici, des hommes d’entre les enfants d’Israël sont arrivés ici, cette nuit, pour explorer le pays.

Then report was made to the King of Iericho, saying, Beholde, there came men hither to night, of the children of Israel, to spie out the countrey.

3 Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison; car c’est pour explorer tout le pays qu’ils sont venus.

And the King of Iericho sent vnto Rahab, saying, Bring foorth the men that are come to thee, and which are entred into thine house: for they be come to search out all the land.

4 La femme prit les deux hommes, et les cacha; et elle dit: Il est vrai que ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d’où ils étaient;

(But ye woman had taken the two men, and hid them) Therefore saide she thus, There came men vnto me, but I wist not whence they were.

5 et, comme la porte a dû se fermer de nuit, ces hommes sont sortis; j’ignore où ils sont allés: hâtez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les atteindrez.

And when they shut the gate in the darke, the men went out, whither the men went I wote not: follow ye after them quickly, for ye shall ouertake them.

6 Elle les avait fait monter sur le toit, et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin, qu’elle avait arrangées sur le toit.

(But she had brought them vp to the roofe of the house, and hidde them with the stalkes of flaxe, which she had spread abroad vpon the roofe)

7 Ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène au gué du Jourdain, et l’on ferma la porte après qu’ils furent sortis.

And certaine men pursued after them, the way to Iorden, vnto the foordes, and as soone as they which pursued after them, were gone out, they shut the gate.

8 Avant que les espions se couchassent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit

And before they were a sleepe, she came vp vnto them vpon the roofe,

9 et leur dit: L’Éternel, je le sais, vous a donné ce pays, la terreur que vous inspirez nous a saisis, et tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous.

And saide vnto the men, I knowe that the Lord hath giuen you the land, and that the feare of you is fallen vpon vs, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

10 Car nous avons appris comment, à votre sortie d’Égypte, l’Éternel a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer Rouge, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens au-delà du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez dévoués par interdit.

For we haue heard, howe the Lord dried vp the water of the redde Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did vnto the two Kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Iorden, vnto Sihon and to Og, whom ye vtterly destroyed:

11 Nous l’avons appris, et nous avons perdu courage, et tous nos esprits sont abattus à votre aspect; car c’est l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre.

And when wee heard it, our heartes did faint, and there remained no more courage in any because of you: for the Lord your God, he is the God in heauen aboue, and in earth beneath.

12 Et maintenant, je vous prie, jurez-moi par l’Éternel que vous aurez pour la maison de mon père la même bonté que j’ai eue pour vous.

Now therefore, I pray you, sweare vnto me by the Lord; that as I haue shewed you mercie, ye will also shewe mercie vnto my fathers house, and giue me a true token,

13 Donnez-moi l’assurance que vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs, et tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et que vous nous sauverez de la mort.

And that yee will saue aliue my father and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they haue: and that yee will deliuer our soules from death.

14 Ces hommes lui répondirent: Nous sommes prêts à mourir pour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne; et quand l’Éternel nous donnera le pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité.

And the men answered her, Our life for you to die, if ye vtter not this our businesse: and when the Lord hath giuen vs the lande, we will deale mercifully and truely with thee.

15 Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car la maison qu’elle habitait était sur la muraille de la ville.

Then she let them downe by a corde thorowe the windowe: for her house was vpon the towne wall, and she dwelt vpon the wall.

16 Elle leur dit: Allez du côté de la montagne, de peur que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent; cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient de retour; après cela, vous suivrez votre chemin.

And she said vnto them, Goe you into the mountaine, least the pursuers meete with you, and hide your selues there three dayes, vntill the pursuers be returned: then afterwarde may yee goe your way.

17 Ces hommes lui dirent: Voici de quelle manière nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.

And the men said vnto her, We will be blamelesse of this thine othe, which thou hast made vs sweare.

18 A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil cramoisi à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre, et recueille auprès de toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères, et toute la famille de ton père.

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this cord of red threde in the window, whereby thou lettest vs downe, and thou shalt bring thy father and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy fathers houshold home to thee.

19 Si quelqu’un d’eux sort de la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang retombera sur sa tête, et nous en serons innocents; mais si on met la main sur l’un quelconque de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, son sang retombera sur notre tête.

And whosoeuer then doeth goe out at the doores of thine house into the streete, his blood shalbe vpon his head, and we will be giltlesse: but whosoeuer shall be with thee in the house, his blood shalbe on our head, if any hande touch him:

20 Et si tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.

And if thou vtter this our matter, we will be quite of thine othe, which thou hast made vs sweare.

21 Elle répondit: Qu’il en soit selon vos paroles. Elle prit ainsi congé d’eux, et ils s’en allèrent. Et elle attacha le cordon de cramoisi à la fenêtre.

And she answered, According vnto your wordes, so be it: then she sent them away, and they departed, and she bound the red cord in ye window.

22 Ils partirent, et arrivèrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu’à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent de retour. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent par tout le chemin, mais ils ne les trouvèrent pas.

And they departed, and came into the mountaine, and there abode three dayes, vntil the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but founde them not.

23 Les deux hommes s’en retournèrent, descendirent de la montagne, et passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.

So the two men returned, and descended from the mountaine, and passed ouer, and came to Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and tolde him all things that came vnto them.

24 Ils dirent à Josué: Certainement, l’Éternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant nous.

Also they saide vnto Ioshua, Surely the Lord hath deliuered into our handes all the lande: for euen all the inhabitants of the countrey faint because of vs.
