Isaïe 9
1 Mais les ténèbres ne régneront pas toujours Sur la terre où il y a maintenant des angoisses: Si les temps passés ont couvert d’opprobre Le pays de Zabulon et le pays de Nephthali, Les temps à venir couvriront de gloire La contrée voisine de la mer, au-delà du Jourdain, Le territoire des Gentils.
For there is no gloom to her who had been in anguish, In the former time, he brought into dishonour The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, In the latter time, hath he brought into honour The Lake-way over the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 Le peuple qui marchait dans les ténèbres Voit une grande lumière; Sur ceux qui habitaient le pays de l’ombre de la mort Une lumière resplendit.
the people who were walking in darkness, Have seen a great light, —The dwellers in a land death-shadowed, A light, hath shined upon them.
3 Tu rends le peuple nombreux, Tu lui accordes de grandes joies; Il se réjouit devant toi, comme on se réjouit à la moisson, Comme on pousse des cris d’allégresse au partage du butin.
Thou hast increased the exultation Thou hast made great the joy, —They joy before thee, according to the joy of harvest, As men exult when they distribute spoil.
4 Car le joug qui pesait sur lui, Le bâton qui frappait son dos, La verge de celui qui l’opprimait, Tu les brises, comme à la journée de Madian.
For, the yoke of their burden, The cross-bar of their shoulder, The goad of their driver, Hast thou broken, as in the day of Midian.
5 Car toute chaussure qu’on porte dans la mêlée, Et tout vêtement guerrier roulé dans le sang, Seront livrés aux flammes, Pour être dévorés par le feu.
Surely, every boot of one tramping in tumult, and the war-cloak rolled in blood Then shall serve for burning, food for fire;
6 Car un enfant nous est né, un fils nous est donné, Et la domination reposera sur son épaule; On l’appellera Admirable, Conseiller, Dieu puissant, Père éternel, Prince de la paix.
For, A Child, hath been born to us, A Son, hath been given to us, And the dominion is upon his shoulder, —And his Name hath been called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty GOD, Father of Futurity, Prince of Prosperity.
7 Donner à l’empire de l’accroissement, Et une paix sans fin au trône de David et à son royaume, L’affermir et le soutenir par le droit et par la justice, Dès maintenant et à toujours: Voilà ce que fera le zèle de l’Éternel des armées.
Of the increase of dominion, and of prosperity, There shall be no end—Upon the throne of David and Upon his kingdom, By establishing it and By sustaining it, With justice and With righteousness, —From henceforth, Even unto times age-abiding: The jealousy of Yahweh of hosts, will perform this!
8 Le Seigneur envoie une parole à Jacob: Elle tombe sur Israël.
A word, hath My Lord, sent unto Jacob, —And it shall alight on Israel;
9 Tout le peuple en aura connaissance, Éphraïm et les habitants de Samarie, Qui disent avec orgueil et fierté:
and the people shall all of them know [it] —Ephraim and the dweller in Samaria—Who in pride and insolence of heart, are saying:
10 Des briques sont tombées, Nous bâtirons en pierres de taille; Des sycomores ont été coupés, Nous les remplacerons par des cèdres.
Bricks, have fallen down But with hewn stone, will we build, —Sycomores, have been felled, But with cedars, will we replace them.
11 L’Éternel élèvera contre eux les ennemis de Retsin, Et il armera leurs ennemis,
Therefore will Yahweh strengthen the adversaries of Resin against him, —And his enemies will he arouse:
12 Les Syriens à l’orient, les Philistins à l’occident; Et ils dévoreront Israël à pleine bouche. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.
Syrians before and Philistines behind, Thus have they devoured Israel with open mouth, —For all this, hath his anger, not turned back, But still, is his hand outstretched.
13 Le peuple ne revient pas à celui qui le frappe, Et il ne cherche pas l’Éternel des armées.
Yet, the people, have not turned unto him that smote them, —And Yahweh of hosts, have they not sought.
14 Aussi l’Éternel arrachera d’Israël la tête et la queue, La branche de palmier et le roseau, En un seul jour.
Therefore hath Yahweh cut off from Israel—Head and tail Palm-top and rush, In one day.
15 (L’ancien et le magistrat, c’est la tête, Et le prophète qui enseigne le mensonge, c’est la queue).
The elder and favourite, he, is the head, —And the prophet teaching falsehood, he, is the tail;
16 Ceux qui conduisent ce peuple l’égarent, Et ceux qui se laissent conduire se perdent.
And they who should have led this people forward have been causing them to stray, —And, they who are led of them are destroyed,
17 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur ne saurait se réjouir de leurs jeunes hommes, Ni avoir pitié de leurs orphelins et de leurs veuves; Car tous sont des impies et des méchants, Et toutes les bouches profèrent des infamies. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.
For this cause, over their choice young men, will My Lord not rejoice, And on their fatherless and their widows, will he not have compassion, For every one of them, is profane and an evildoer, And, every mouth is speaking baseness, —For all this, hath his anger, not turned back, But still, is his hand outstretched.
18 Car la méchanceté consume comme un feu, Qui dévore ronces et épines; Il embrase l’épaisseur de la forêt, D’où s’élèvent des colonnes de fumée.
For lawlessness, hath consumed like fire, Briars and thorns, doth it devour, —Yea it hath kindled upon the thickets of the forest, And they have rolled up as a column of smoke.
19 Par la colère de l’Éternel des armées le pays est embrasé, Et le peuple est comme la proie du feu; Nul n’épargne son frère.
Through the wrath of Yahweh of hosts, is the land consumed, —And the people have come to be, as fuel for fire, A man unto his own brother, sheweth not pity;
20 On pille à droite, et l’on a faim; On dévore à gauche, et l’on n’est pas rassasié; Chacun dévore la chair de son bras.
And he hath slain on the right, and yet is hungry, And hath eaten on the left, yet are they not satisfied, —Every one, the flesh of his own arm, will they eat:
21 Manassé dévore Éphraïm, Éphraïm Manassé, Et ensemble ils fondent sur Juda. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.
Manasseh—Ephraim, and Ephraim—Manasseh, They together—against Judah, —For all this, hath his anger not turned back, But still, is his hand outstretched.
