Isaïe 10
1 Malheur à ceux qui prononcent des ordonnances iniques, Et à ceux qui transcrivent des arrêts injustes,
Woe to those who make unfair laws, and who, when writing, write injustice:
2 Pour refuser justice aux pauvres, Et ravir leur droit aux malheureux de mon peuple, Pour faire des veuves leur proie, Et des orphelins leur butin!
in order to oppress the poor in judgment, and to do violence to the case of the humble of my people, in order that widows may be their prey, and that they might plunder the orphan.
3 Que ferez-vous au jour du châtiment, Et de la ruine qui du lointain fondra sur vous? Vers qui fuirez-vous, pour avoir du secours, Et où laisserez-vous votre gloire?
What will you do on the day of visitation and calamity which is approaching from afar? To whom will you flee for assistance? And where will you leave behind your own glory,
4 Les uns seront courbés parmi les captifs, Les autres tomberont parmi les morts. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.
so that you may not be bowed down under the chains, and fall with the slain? Concerning all this, his fury was not turned away; instead, his hand was still extended.
5 Malheur à l’Assyrien, verge de ma colère! La verge dans sa main, c’est l’instrument de ma fureur.
Woe to Assur! He is the rod and the staff of my fury, and my indignation is in their hands.
6 Je l’ai lâché contre une nation impie, Je l’ai fait marcher contre le peuple de mon courroux, Pour qu’il se livre au pillage et fasse du butin, Pour qu’il le foule aux pieds comme la boue des rues.
I will send him to a deceitful nation, and I will order him against the people of my fury, so that he may take away the plunder, and tear apart the prey, and place it to be trampled like the mud of the streets.
7 Mais il n’en juge pas ainsi, Et ce n’est pas là la pensée de son cœur; Il ne songe qu’à détruire, Qu’à exterminer les nations en foule.
But he will not consider it to be so, and his heart will not suppose it to be this way. Instead, his heart will be set to crush and to exterminate more than a few nations.
8 Car il dit: Mes princes ne sont-ils pas autant de rois?
For he will say:
9 N’en a-t-il pas été de Calno comme de Carkemisch? N’en a-t-il pas été de Hamath comme d’Arpad? N’en a-t-il pas été de Samarie comme de Damas?
“Are not my princes like many kings? Is not Calno like Carchemish, and Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?
10 De même que ma main a atteint les royaumes des idoles, Où il y avait plus d’images qu’à Jérusalem et à Samarie,
In the same manner as my hand reached the kingdoms of the idol, so also will it reach their false images, those of Jerusalem and of Samaria.
11 Ce que j’ai fait à Samarie et à ses idoles, Ne le ferai-je pas à Jérusalem et à ses images?
Should I not do to Jerusalem and her false images, just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”
12 Mais, quand le Seigneur aura accompli toute son œuvre Sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, Je punirai le roi d’Assyrie pour le fruit de son cœur orgueilleux, Et pour l’arrogance de ses regards hautains.
And this shall be: when the Lord will have completed each of his works on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I will act against the fruit of the exalted heart of king Assur, and against the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.
13 Car il dit: C’est par la force de ma main que j’ai agi, C’est par ma sagesse, car je suis intelligent; J’ai reculé les limites des peuples, et pillé leurs trésors, Et, comme un héros, j’ai renversé ceux qui siégeaient sur des trônes;
For he has said: “I have acted with the strength of my own hand, and I have understood with my own wisdom, and I have removed the limits of the people, and I have plundered their leaders, and, like one with power, I have pulled down those residing on high.
14 J’ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid, Et, comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, J’ai ramassé toute la terre: Nul n’a remué l’aile, Ni ouvert le bec, ni poussé un cri.
And my hand has reached to the strength of the people, as to a nest. And, just as the eggs which have been left behind are gathered, so have I gathered the entire earth. And there was no one who moved a wing, or opened a mouth, or uttered a snarl.”
15 La hache se glorifie-t-elle envers celui qui s’en sert? Ou la scie est-elle arrogante envers celui qui la manie? Comme si la verge faisait mouvoir celui qui la lève, Comme si le bâton soulevait celui qui n’est pas du bois!
Should the axe glorify itself over him who wields it? Or can the saw exalt itself over him who pulls it? How can a rod lift itself up against him who wields it, or a staff exalt itself, though it is only wood?
16 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur, le Seigneur des armées, enverra Le dépérissement parmi ses robustes guerriers; Et, sous sa magnificence, éclatera un embrasement, Comme l’embrasement d’un feu.
Because of this, the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send leanness among his fat ones. And under the influence of his glory, a burning ardor will rage, like a consuming fire.
17 La lumière d’Israël deviendra un feu, Et son Saint une flamme, Qui consumera et dévorera ses épines et ses ronces, En un seul jour;
And the light of Israel will be like a fire, and the Holy One of Israel will be like a flame. And his thorns and briers will be set ablaze and devoured, in one day.
18 Qui consumera, corps et âme, La magnificence de sa forêt et de ses campagnes. Il en sera comme d’un malade, qui tombe en défaillance.
And the glory of his forest and of his beautiful hill will be consumed, from the soul even to the flesh. And he will flee away in terror.
19 Le reste des arbres de sa forêt pourra être compté, Et un enfant en écrirait le nombre.
And what remains of the trees of his forest will be so few, and so easily numbered, that even a child could write them down.
20 En ce jour-là, Le reste d’Israël et les réchappés de la maison de Jacob, Cesseront de s’appuyer sur celui qui les frappait; Ils s’appuieront avec confiance sur l’Éternel, le Saint d’Israël.
And this shall be in that day: those not added to the remnant of Israel, and those who escape of the house of Jacob, will not lean upon him who strikes them. Instead, they will lean upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 Le reste reviendra, le reste de Jacob, Au Dieu puissant.
The remnant of Jacob, again I say the remnant, will be converted to the mighty God.
22 Quand ton peuple, ô Israël, serait comme le sable de la mer, Un reste seulement reviendra; La destruction est résolue, elle fera déborder la justice.
For though your people, O Israel, will be like the sand of the sea, yet only a remnant of them will be converted. The consummation, having been shortened, will be inundated with justice.
23 Et cette destruction qui a été résolue, Le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées, l’accomplira dans tout le pays.
For the Lord, the God of hosts, will accomplish an abbreviation and a consummation, in the midst of all the earth.
24 Cependant, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées: O mon peuple, qui habites en Sion, ne crains pas l’Assyrien! Il te frappe de la verge, Et il lève son bâton sur toi, comme faisaient les Égyptiens.
For this reason, the Lord, the God of hosts, says this: “My people, who inhabit Zion: do not be afraid of Assur. He will strike you with his rod, and he will lift up his staff over you, on the way of Egypt.
25 Mais, encore un peu de temps, Et le châtiment cessera, Puis ma colère se tournera contre lui pour l’anéantir.
But after a little while and a brief time, my indignation will be consumed, and my fury will turn to their wickedness.”
26 L’Éternel des armées agitera le fouet contre lui, Comme il frappa Madian au rocher d’Oreb; Et, de même qu’il leva son bâton sur la mer, Il le lèvera encore, comme en Égypte.
And the Lord of hosts will raise up a scourge over him, like the scourge of Midian at the rock of Oreb, and he will raise up his rod over the sea, and he will lift it up against the way of Egypt.
27 En ce jour, son fardeau sera ôté de dessus ton épaule, Et son joug de dessus ton cou; Et la graisse fera éclater le joug.
And this shall be in that day: his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke will be taken away from your neck, and the yoke will decay at the appearance of the oil.
28 Il marche sur Ajjath, traverse Migron, Laisse ses bagages à Micmasch.
He will approach Aiath; he will cross into Migron; he will entrust his vessels to Michmash.
29 Ils passent le défilé, Ils couchent à Guéba; Rama tremble, Guibea de Saül prend la fuite.
They have passed through in haste; Geba is our seat; Ramah was stupefied; Gibeah of Saul fled.
30 Fais éclater ta voix, fille de Gallim! Prends garde, Laïs! Malheur à toi, Anathoth!
Neigh with your voice, daughter of Gallim; pay attention, Laishah, impoverished woman of Anathoth.
31 Madména se disperse, Les habitants de Guébim sont en fuite.
Madmenah has moved away; be strengthened, you inhabitants of Gebim.
32 Encore un jour de halte à Nob, Et il menace de sa main la montagne de la fille de Sion, La colline de Jérusalem.
It is still daylight, so stand at Nob. He will shake his hand against the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
33 Voici, le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées, Brise les rameaux avec violence: Les plus grands sont coupés, Les plus élevés sont abattus.
Behold, the sovereign Lord of hosts will crush the little bottle of wine with terror, and the exalted in stature will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low.
34 Il renverse avec le fer les taillis de la forêt, Et le Liban tombe sous le Puissant.
And the dense forest will be overturned with iron. And Lebanon, with its exalted ones, will fall.
