Exode 17
1 Toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël partit du désert de Sin, selon les marches que l’Éternel leur avait ordonnées; et ils campèrent à Rephidim, où le peuple ne trouva point d’eau à boire.
And all the assembly of the sons of Israel set forward out of the desert of Sin, by their removings, at the bidding of Yahweh, —and encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Alors le peuple chercha querelle à Moïse. Ils dirent: Donnez-nous de l’eau à boire. Moïse leur répondit: Pourquoi me cherchez-vous querelle? Pourquoi tentez-vous l’Éternel?
And the people found fault with Moses, and said—Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why should ye find fault with me? Why should ye put Yahweh to the proof?
3 Le peuple était là, pressé par la soif, et murmurait contre Moïse. Il disait: Pourquoi nous as-tu fait monter hors d’Égypte, pour me faire mourir de soif avec mes enfants et mes troupeaux?
So the people thirsted, there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, —and said—Wherefore is it that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill me and my sons and my cattle, with thirst?
4 Moïse cria à l’Éternel, en disant: Que ferai-je à ce peuple? Encore un peu, et ils me lapideront.
And Moses made outcry unto Yahweh saying, What am I to do, with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me.
5 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: Passe devant le peuple, et prends avec toi des anciens d’Israël; prends aussi dans ta main ta verge avec laquelle tu as frappé le fleuve, et marche!
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Pass over before the people, and take with thee some of the elders of Israel, —thy staff also wherewith thou didst smite the river, take thou in thy hand, so shalt thou go thy way.
6 Voici, je me tiendrai devant toi sur le rocher d’Horeb; tu frapperas le rocher, et il en sortira de l’eau, et le peuple boira. Et Moïse fit ainsi, aux yeux des anciens d’Israël.
Behold me! standing before thee, there upon the rock in Horeb, then shalt thou smite the rock and there shall come forth therefrom water, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 Il donna à ce lieu le nom de Massa et Meriba, parce que les enfants d’Israël avaient contesté, et parce qu’ils avaient tenté l’Éternel, en disant: L’Éternel est-il au milieu de nous, ou n’y est-il pas?
So he called the name of the place, Massah, and Meribah, —because of the fault-finding of the sons of Israel, and because of their putting Yahweh to the proof, saying, Is Yahweh in our midst or is he not?
8 Amalek vint combattre Israël à Rephidim.
Then came in Amalek, —and fought with Israel, in Rephidim.
9 Alors Moïse dit à Josué: Choisis-nous des hommes, sors, et combats Amalek; demain je me tiendrai sur le sommet de la colline, la verge de Dieu dans ma main.
And Moses said unto Joshua—Choose for us men, and go forth, fight with Amalek, —to-morrow, am, I, stationing myself upon the top of the hill, with the staff of God in my hand.
10 Josué fit ce que lui avait dit Moïse, pour combattre Amalek. Et Moïse, Aaron et Hur montèrent au sommet de la colline.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek, —and Moses, Aaron and Hur, went up to the top of the hill.
11 Lorsque Moïse élevait sa main, Israël était le plus fort; et lorsqu’il baissait sa main, Amalek était le plus fort.
And it shall be when Moses shall lift on high his hands, then shall Israel prevail, but when he shall let down his hands, then shall Amalek prevail.
12 Les mains de Moïse étant fatiguées, ils prirent une pierre qu’ils placèrent sous lui, et il s’assit dessus. Aaron et Hur soutenaient ses mains, l’un d’un côté, l’autre de l’autre; et ses mains restèrent fermes jusqu’au coucher du soleil.
But, the hands of Moses, were weary, so they took a stone, and put under him, and he sat thereupon, —and, Aaron and Hur, upheld his hands—on this side, one and on that side, one, and so his hands became steady, until the going in of the sun.
13 Et Josué vainquit Amalek et son peuple, au tranchant de l’épée.
So Joshua overthrew Amalek and his people, with the edge of the sword.
14 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: Écris cela dans le livre, pour que le souvenir s’en conserve, et déclare à Josué que j’effacerai la mémoire d’Amalek de dessous les cieux.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Write this as a remembrancer in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua—that I will, wipe out, the remembrance of Amalek, from under the heavens.
15 Moïse bâtit un autel, et lui donna pour nom: l’Éternel ma bannière.
And Moses built an altar, —and called the name thereof, Yahweh-nissi.
16 Il dit: Parce que la main a été levée sur le trône de l’Éternel, il y aura guerre de l’Éternel contre Amalek, de génération en génération.
And he said—Because of a hand against the throne of Yah, Yahweh hath war with Amalek, —from generation to generation!
