Deutéronome 4
1 Maintenant, Israël, écoute les lois et les ordonnances que je vous enseigne. Mettez-les en pratique, afin que vous viviez, et que vous entriez en possession du pays que vous donne l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères.
Now, therefore, O Israel, hearken thou unto the statutes, and unto the regulations, which, I, am teaching you, to do [them], —to the end ye may live and enter and possess the land, which, Yahweh, the God of your fathers, is giving unto you.
2 Vous n’ajouterez rien à ce que je vous prescris, et vous n’en retrancherez rien; mais vous observerez les commandements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, tels que je vous les prescris.
Ye shall not add unto the word which, I, am commanding you, neither shall ye take away therefrom, —that ye may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, which, I, am commanding you.
3 Vos yeux ont vu ce que l’Éternel a fait à l’occasion de Baal-Peor: l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a détruit du milieu de toi tous ceux qui étaient allés après Baal-Peor.
Yours are the eyes, that have seen what Yahweh did in Baal-peor, for every man who went after Baal-peor, did Yahweh thy God destroy out of thy midst;
4 Et vous, qui vous êtes attachés à l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous êtes aujourd’hui tous vivants.
but, ye who kept on cleaving unto Yahweh your God, alive, are ye all to-day.
5 Voici, je vous ai enseigné des lois et des ordonnances, comme l’Éternel, mon Dieu, me l’a commandé, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
See! I have taught you statutes, and regulations, as Yahweh my God commanded me, —that ye should do so, in the midst of the land whereinto ye are entering to possess it.
6 Vous les observerez et vous les mettrez en pratique; car ce sera là votre sagesse et votre intelligence aux yeux des peuples, qui entendront parler de toutes ces lois et qui diront: Cette grande nation est un peuple absolument sage et intelligent!
Therefore shall ye observe, and do [them], for that, will be your wisdom, and discernment, in the eyes of the peoples, —who will hear all these statutes, and will say—Nevertheless, a people wise and discerning, is this great nation.
7 Quelle est, en effet, la grande nation qui ait des dieux aussi proches que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, l’est de nous toutes les fois que nous l’invoquons?
For what great nation is there which hath gods nigh unto it, —like Yahweh our God, whensoever we have cried out unto him.
8 Et quelle est la grande nation qui ait des lois et des ordonnances justes, comme toute cette loi que je vous présente aujourd’hui?
Or what great nation which hath righteous statutes and regulations, like all this law, which, I, am setting before you to-day?
9 Seulement, prends garde à toi et veille attentivement sur ton âme, tous les jours de ta vie, de peur que tu n’oublies les choses que tes yeux ont vues, et qu’elles ne sortent de ton cœur; enseigne-les à tes enfants et aux enfants de tes enfants.
Only take thou heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently, so that thou forget not the things which thine own eyes have seen, and so that they go not out of thy heart, all the days of thy life, —but thou shalt make them known unto thy sons and unto thy sons’ sons: —
10 Souviens-toi du jour où tu te présentas devant l’Éternel, ton Dieu, à Horeb, lorsque l’Éternel me dit: Assemble auprès de moi le peuple! Je veux leur faire entendre mes paroles, afin qu’ils apprennent à me craindre tout le temps qu’ils vivront sur la terre; et afin qu’ils les enseignent à leurs enfants.
What day thou didst stand before Yahweh thy God, in Horeb, when Yahweh said unto me, Gather unto me the people, that I may let them hear my words, —which they must learn that they may revere me all the days which they are living upon the soil, their children also, must they teach.
11 Vous vous approchâtes et vous vous tîntes au pied de la montagne. La montagne était embrasée, et les flammes s’élevaient jusqu’au milieu du ciel. Il y avait des ténèbres, des nuées, de l’obscurité.
So ye drew near and stood, under the mountain. Now, the mountain, was burning with fire, up to the midst of the heavens, —darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.
12 Et l’Éternel vous parla du milieu du feu; vous entendîtes le son des paroles, mais vous ne vîtes point de figure, vous n’entendîtes qu’une voix.
Then spake Yahweh unto you out of the midst of the fire, —a voice of words, ye were hearing, no form, were ye seeing, there was only a voice.
13 Il publia son alliance, qu’il vous ordonna d’observer, les dix commandements; et il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
Then declared he unto you his covenant which he commanded you to do, the ten words, —and wrote them upon two tables of stone.
14 En ce temps-là, l’Éternel me commanda de vous enseigner des lois et des ordonnances, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
And unto me, gave Yahweh command, at that time, to teach you statutes and regulations, —that ye should do them, in the land whereinto ye are passing over to possess it.
15 Puisque vous n’avez vu aucune figure le jour où l’Éternel vous parla du milieu du feu, à Horeb, veillez attentivement sur vos âmes,
Ye must take diligent heed, therefore unto your own souls, for ye saw no manner of form, on the day Yahweh spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire;
16 de peur que vous ne vous corrompiez et que vous ne vous fassiez une image taillée, une représentation de quelque idole, la figure d’un homme ou d’une femme,
lest ye should break faith, and make you an image, a form of any likeness, —a model of male or female;
17 la figure d’un animal qui soit sur la terre, la figure d’un oiseau qui vole dans les cieux,
a model of any beast that is in the earth, —a model of any winged bird, that flieth in the heavens;
18 la figure d’une bête qui rampe sur le sol, la figure d’un poisson qui vive dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
a model of any thing that creepeth on the ground, —a model of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;
19 Veille sur ton âme, de peur que, levant tes yeux vers le ciel, et voyant le soleil, la lune et les étoiles, toute l’armée des cieux, tu ne sois entraîné à te prosterner en leur présence et à leur rendre un culte: ce sont des choses que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a données en partage à tous les peuples, sous le ciel tout entier.
or lest thou shouldest lift up thine eyes towards the heavens and see the sun and the moon, and the stars—all the host of the heavens, and shouldest be seduced, and shouldest bow thyself down to them and he led to serve them, —the which Yahweh thy God hath assigned unto all the peoples under all the heavens;
20 Mais vous, l’Éternel vous a pris, et vous a fait sortir de la fournaise de fer de l’Égypte, afin que vous fussiez un peuple qui lui appartînt en propre, comme vous l’êtes aujourd’hui.
whereas you, hath Yahweh taken, and brought you forth out of a smelting-pot of iron, out of Egypt, —that ye might become his own inherited people as at this day.
21 Et l’Éternel s’irrita contre moi, à cause de vous; et il jura que je ne passerais point le Jourdain, et que je n’entrerais point dans le bon pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage.
But, Yahweh shewed himself angry with me, for your sakes, —and sware that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not enter into the good land, which, Yahweh thy God, is giving unto thee as an inheritance;
22 Je mourrai donc en ce pays-ci, je ne passerai point le Jourdain; mais vous le passerez, et vous posséderez ce bon pays.
for, I, am about to die in this land, I am not to pass over the Jordan, —but, ye, are to pass over, and possess this good land.
23 Veillez sur vous, afin de ne point mettre en oubli l’alliance que l’Éternel, votre Dieu, a traitée avec vous, et de ne point vous faire d’image taillée, de représentation quelconque, que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’ait défendue.
Take heed to yourselves lest ye forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he hath solemnised with you, —and so make for yourselves an image, the form of anything, the which Yahweh thy God hath forbidden thee;
24 Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est un feu dévorant, un Dieu jaloux.
seeing that as for Yahweh thy God, a consuming fire, he is, —a jealous GOD.
25 Lorsque tu auras des enfants, et des enfants de tes enfants, et que vous serez depuis longtemps dans le pays, si vous vous corrompez, si vous faites des images taillées, des représentations de quoi que ce soit, si vous faites ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, pour l’irriter,
When thou shalt beget sons, and sons’ sons, and become careless in the land and break faith and make an image the form of any thing, and shalt do the thing that is wicked in the eyes of Yahweh thy God provoking him to anger,
26 j’en prends aujourd’hui à témoin contre vous le ciel et la terre, vous disparaîtrez par une mort rapide du pays dont vous allez prendre possession au-delà du Jourdain, vous n’y prolongerez pas vos jours, car vous serez entièrement détruits.
I take both the heavens and the earth to witness against you to-day, that ye shall, perish, speedily, from off the land which ye are passing over the Jordan to possess, —ye shall not prolong your days thereupon; for, ye shall surely be laid waste;
27 L’Éternel vous dispersera parmi les peuples, et vous ne resterez qu’un petit nombre au milieu des nations où l’Éternel vous emmènera.
and Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, —and ye shall have left remaining of you men easily counted, among the nations whither Yahweh will drive you;
28 Et là, vous servirez des dieux, ouvrage de mains d’homme, du bois et de la pierre, qui ne peuvent ni voir, ni entendre, ni manger, ni sentir.
and ye will serve there gods made by the hands of man, —wood or stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
29 C’est de là aussi que tu chercheras l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et que tu le trouveras, si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
If thou shalt seek from thence, Yahweh thy God, then shalt thou find him, —when thou shalt search after him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.
30 Au sein de ta détresse, toutes ces choses t’arriveront. Alors, dans la suite des temps, tu retourneras à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix;
In thy distress, when all these things have found thee out—in the afterpart of the days, thou wilt return unto Yahweh thy God, and wilt hearken to his voice.
31 car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est un Dieu de miséricorde, qui ne t’abandonnera point et ne te détruira point: il n’oubliera pas l’alliance de tes pères, qu’il leur a jurée.
For, a GOD of compassion, is Yahweh thy God, he will not forsake thee neither will he destroy thee, —nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
32 Interroge les temps anciens qui t’ont précédé, depuis le jour où Dieu créa l’homme sur la terre, et d’une extrémité du ciel à l’autre: y eut-il jamais si grand événement, et a-t-on jamais ouï chose semblable?
For ask, I pray you, of the former days which were before thee, even from the day when God created man upon the earth, yea from one end of the heavens even to the other end of the heavens, —whether aught was ever brought to pass, like this great thing, or was ever heard of like it:
33 Fut-il jamais un peuple qui entendît la voix de Dieu parlant du milieu du feu, comme tu l’as entendue, et qui soit demeuré vivant?
Did a people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of fire, as, thou, didst hear, and yet live?
34 Fut-il jamais un dieu qui essayât de venir prendre à lui une nation du milieu d’une nation, par des épreuves, des signes, des miracles et des combats, à main forte et à bras étendu, et avec des prodiges de terreur, comme l’a fait pour vous l’Éternel, votre Dieu, en Égypte et sous vos yeux?
Or did a god ever make trial of entering in to take unto him a nation out of the midst of a nation, by provings, by signs and by wonders and by fighting, and by a firm hand and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, —according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
35 Tu as été rendu témoin de ces choses, afin que tu reconnusses que l’Éternel est Dieu, qu’il n’y en a point d’autre.
Thou, wast allowed to see that thou mightest know, that Yahweh, he is God, there is none other than he alone.
36 Du ciel, il t’a fait entendre sa voix pour t’instruire; et, sur la terre, il t’a fait voir son grand feu, et tu as entendu ses paroles du milieu du feu.
Out of the heavens, he let thee hear his voice to instruct thee, —and, upon the earth, he let thee see his great fire, and his own words, thou didst hear out of the midst of the fire.
37 Il a aimé tes pères, et il a choisi leur postérité après eux; il t’a fait lui-même sortir d’Égypte par sa grande puissance;
And because that he loved thy fathers, therefore chose he his seed after him, —and brought thee forth with his presence with his great might, out of Egypt;
38 il a chassé devant toi des nations supérieures en nombre et en force, pour te faire entrer dans leur pays, pour t’en donner la possession, comme tu le vois aujourd’hui.
to dispossess nations, greater and stronger than thou from before thee, —to bring thee in. to give unto thee their land for an inheritance: As at this day.
39 Sache donc en ce jour, et retiens dans ton cœur que l’Éternel est Dieu, en haut dans le ciel et en bas sur la terre, et qu’il n’y en a point d’autre.
So then thou must consider to-day, and bring it back to thy heart, that, Yahweh, he is God in the heavens above and upon the earth beneath, —there is none other.
40 Et observe ses lois et ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd’hui, afin que tu sois heureux, toi et tes enfants après toi, et que tu prolonges désormais tes jours dans le pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.
So shalt thou keep his statutes and his commandments which, I, am commanding thee to-day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy sons after thee, —and to the end thou mayest prolong thy days upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God, is giving thee, all the days.
41 Alors Moïse choisit trois villes de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient,
Then, did Moses set apart three cities, over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun:
42 afin qu’elles servissent de refuge au meurtrier qui aurait involontairement tué son prochain, sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi, et afin qu’il pût sauver sa vie en s’enfuyant dans l’une de ces villes.
that the manslayer might flee thither who should slay his neighbour unawares, he, not having hated him, aforetime, —and might flee unto one of these cities, and live:
43 C’étaient: Betser, dans le désert, dans la plaine, chez les Rubénites; Ramoth, en Galaad, chez les Gadites, et Golan, en Basan, chez les Manassites.
namely Bezer, in the desert of the table-land, for the Reubenites, —and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
44 C’est ici la loi que présenta Moïse aux enfants d’Israël.
This, then is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel:
45 Voici les préceptes, les lois et les ordonnances que Moïse prescrivit aux enfants d’Israël, après leur sortie d’Égypte.
These, are the testimonies, and the statutes and the regulations, —which Moses spake unto the sons of Israel when they came forth out of Egypt:
46 C’était de l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans la vallée, vis-à-vis de Beth-Peor, au pays de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et qui fut battu par Moïse et les enfants d’Israël, après leur sortie d’Égypte.
over the Jordan in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, —whom Moses and the sons of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt:
47 Ils s’emparèrent de son pays et de celui d’Og, roi de Basan. Ces deux rois des Amoréens étaient de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient.
so they took possession of his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan the two kings of the Amorites, who were over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun;
48 Leur territoire s’étendait depuis Aroër sur les bords du torrent de l’Arnon jusqu’à la montagne de Sion qui est l’Hermon,
from Aroer which is on the edge of the ravine of Arnon, even unto Mount Sion, the same, is Hermon;
49 et il embrassait toute la plaine de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’orient, jusqu’à la mer de la plaine, au pied du Pisga.
and all the waste plain over the Jordan, towards sunrise, even unto the sea of the waste plain, —under the slopes of the Pisgah.
