Actes 6
1 En ce temps-là, le nombre des disciples augmentant, les Hellénistes murmurèrent contre les Hébreux, parce que leurs veuves étaient négligées dans la distribution qui se faisait chaque jour.
NOW in those days, when the disciples were multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian proselytes against the Hebrews, because their widows were overlooked in the daily distribution.
2 Les douze convoquèrent la multitude des disciples, et dirent: Il n’est pas convenable que nous laissions la parole de Dieu pour servir aux tables.
Then the twelve assembling the multitude of the disciples, said, It is not fit that we should leave the word of God, to make distribution to the tables.
3 C’est pourquoi, frères, choisissez parmi vous sept hommes, de qui l’on rende un bon témoignage, qui soient pleins d’Esprit-Saint et de sagesse, et que nous chargerons de cet emploi.
Therefore, brethren, do ye look out for seven men from among yourselves, the best approved, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint to superintend this business.
4 Et nous, nous continuerons à nous appliquer à la prière et au ministère de la parole.
But we will devote ourselves constantly to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
5 Cette proposition plut à toute l’assemblée. Ils élurent Étienne, homme plein de foi et d’Esprit-Saint, Philippe, Prochore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas, et Nicolas, prosélyte d’Antioche.
And this saying was very agreeable to all the multitude: and they elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas a proselyte a man of Antioch:
6 Ils les présentèrent aux apôtres, qui, après avoir prié, leur imposèrent les mains.
whom they presented before the apostles: and having prayed, they laid their hands upon them.
7 La parole de Dieu se répandait de plus en plus, le nombre des disciples augmentait beaucoup à Jérusalem, et une grande foule de sacrificateurs obéissaient à la foi.
And the word of God increased: and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied greatly; and a vast body of the priests were obedient to the faith.
8 Étienne, plein de grâce et de puissance, faisait des prodiges et de grands miracles parmi le peuple.
Now Stephen, full of faith and of power, wrought great miracles and signs among the people.
9 Quelques membres de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, de celle des Cyrénéens et de celle des Alexandrins, avec des Juifs de Cilicie et d’Asie, se mirent à discuter avec lui;
Then rose up certain men of the synagogue of the freed-men, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.
10 mais ils ne pouvaient résister à sa sagesse et à l’Esprit par lequel il parlait.
And they could not resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
11 Alors ils subornèrent des hommes qui dirent: Nous l’avons entendu proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu.
Then they suborned men to say, We heard him speak blasphemous things against Moses, and against God.
12 Ils émurent le peuple, les anciens et les scribes, et, se jetant sur lui, ils le saisirent, et l’emmenèrent au sanhédrin.
And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and coming upon him, they seized him together, and dragged him to the sanhedrim;
13 Ils produisirent de faux témoins, qui dirent: Cet homme ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre le lieu saint et contre la loi;
and they set up false witnesses, saying, This man doth not cease speaking blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
14 car nous l’avons entendu dire que Jésus, ce Nazaréen, détruira ce lieu, et changera les coutumes que Moïse nous a données.
for we have heard him affirm, that Jesus the Nazarean, even he, will destroy this place, and change the accustomed ordinances which Moses delivered to us.
15 Tous ceux qui siégeaient au sanhédrin ayant fixé les regards sur Étienne, son visage leur parut comme celui d’un ange.
And fixing their eyes upon him, all who sat in the sanhedrim, beheld his face as the face of an angel.
