2 Chroniques 24
1 Joas avait sept ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Tsibja, de Beer-Schéba.
Joash was seven when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for forty years. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.
2 Joas fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel pendant toute la vie du sacrificateur Jehojada.
Joash did what was right in the Lord's sight during the lifetime of Jehoiada the priest.
3 Jehojada prit pour Joas deux femmes, et Joas engendra des fils et des filles.
Jehoiada arranged for him to marry two wives, and he had sons and daughters.
4 Après cela, Joas eut la pensée de réparer la maison de l’Éternel.
Some time later, Joash decided to repair the Lord's Temple.
5 Il assembla les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et leur dit: Allez par les villes de Juda, et vous recueillerez dans tout Israël de l’argent, chaque année, pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu; et mettez à cette affaire de l’empressement. Mais les Lévites ne se hâtèrent point.
He summoned the priests and Levites and told them, “Go to the towns of Judah and collect the yearly dues from everyone in Israel to repair the Temple of your God. Do it right away.” But the Levites did not go right away.
6 Le roi appela Jehojada, le souverain sacrificateur, et lui dit: Pourquoi n’as-tu pas veillé à ce que les Lévites apportassent de Juda et de Jérusalem l’impôt ordonné par Moïse, serviteur de l’Éternel, et mis sur l’assemblée d’Israël pour la tente du témoignage?
So the king called for Jehoiada the high priest and asked him, “Why haven't you ordered the Levites to collect from Judah and Jerusalem the tax that Moses, the Lord's servant, and the assembly of Israel imposed to maintain the Tent of the Law?”
7 Car l’impie Athalie et ses fils ont ravagé la maison de Dieu et fait servir pour les Baals toutes les choses consacrées à la maison de l’Éternel.
(The supporters of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into God's Temple and had stolen the holy objects of the Lord's Temple and used them to worship the Baals.)
8 Alors le roi ordonna qu’on fît un coffre, et qu’on le plaçât à la porte de la maison de l’Éternel, en dehors.
The king ordered a collection chest to be made and placed outside the entrance to the Lord's Temple.
9 Et l’on publia dans Juda et dans Jérusalem qu’on apportât à l’Éternel l’impôt mis par Moïse, serviteur de l’Éternel, sur Israël dans le désert.
A decree was proclaimed throughout Judea and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the tax that Moses, the Lord's servant, imposed on Israel in the wilderness.
10 Tous les chefs et tout le peuple s’en réjouirent, et l’on apporta et jeta dans le coffre tout ce qu’on avait à payer.
All the leaders and all the people were glad to do so and brought their taxes. They dropped them in the chest until it was full.
11 Quand c’était le moment où les Lévites, voyant qu’il y avait beaucoup d’argent dans le coffre, devaient le livrer aux inspecteurs royaux, le secrétaire du roi et le commissaire du souverain sacrificateur venaient vider le coffre; ils le prenaient et le remettaient à sa place; ils faisaient ainsi journellement, et ils recueillirent de l’argent en abondance.
Every so often the Levites took the chest to the king's officials. When they saw that it contained a large amount of money, the king's secretary and the chief officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest. Then they would carry it back to its place. They did this every day and collected a great deal of money.
12 Le roi et Jehojada le donnaient à ceux qui étaient chargés de faire exécuter l’ouvrage dans la maison de l’Éternel, et qui prenaient à gage des tailleurs de pierres et des charpentiers pour réparer la maison de l’Éternel, et aussi des ouvriers en fer ou en airain pour réparer la maison de l’Éternel.
Then the king and Jehoiada would allocate the money of those supervising the work on the Lord's Temple to hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the Lord's Temple and craftsmen in iron and bronze to repair the Lord's Temple.
13 Ceux qui étaient chargés de l’ouvrage travaillèrent, et les réparations s’exécutèrent par leurs soins; ils remirent en état la maison de Dieu et la consolidèrent.
The men doing the repairs worked hard and made good progress. They restored God's Temple to its original condition and strengthened it.
14 Lorsqu’ils eurent achevé, ils apportèrent devant le roi et devant Jehojada le reste de l’argent; et l’on en fit des ustensiles pour la maison de l’Éternel, des ustensiles pour le service et pour les holocaustes, des coupes, et d’autres ustensiles d’or et d’argent. Et, pendant toute la vie de Jehojada, on offrit continuellement des holocaustes dans la maison de l’Éternel.
When they finished, they returned the money that was left to the king and Jehoiada, and with it utensils were made for the Lord's Temple, both for the worship services and for the burnt offerings, also bowls for incense and vessels of gold and silver. Burnt offerings were regularly offered in the Lord's Temple regularly throughout Jehoiada's lifetime.
15 Jehojada mourut, âgé et rassasié de jours; il avait à sa mort cent trente ans.
Jehoiada grew old and died at the age of 130, having lived a full life.
16 On l’enterra dans la ville de David avec les rois, parce qu’il avait fait du bien en Israël, et à l’égard de Dieu et à l’égard de sa maison.
He was buried with the kings in the City of David, for all the good he had done in Israel for God and his Temple.
17 Après la mort de Jehojada, les chefs de Juda vinrent se prosterner devant le roi. Alors le roi les écouta.
But after the death of Jehoiada, the leaders of Judah came to swear their loyalty to the king, and he listened to their advice.
18 Et ils abandonnèrent la maison de l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, et ils servirent les Astartés et les idoles. La colère de l’Éternel fut sur Juda et sur Jérusalem, parce qu’ils s’étaient ainsi rendus coupables.
They abandoned the Temple of the Lord, the God of their forefathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Judah and Jerusalem were punished because of their sin.
19 L’Éternel envoya parmi eux des prophètes pour les ramener à lui, mais ils n’écoutèrent point les avertissements qu’ils en reçurent.
The Lord sent prophets to bring the people back to him and to warn them; but they refused to listen.
20 Zacharie, fils du sacrificateur Jehojada, fut revêtu de l’esprit de Dieu; il se présenta devant le peuple et lui dit: Ainsi parle Dieu: Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements de l’Éternel? Vous ne prospérerez point; car vous avez abandonné l’Éternel, et il vous abandonnera.
Then the Spirit of God came to Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and told them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you break the Lord's commandments so that you cannot be successful? Since you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you.’”
21 Et ils conspirèrent contre lui, et le lapidèrent par ordre du roi, dans le parvis de la maison de l’Éternel.
Then the leaders hatched a plot to kill Zechariah, and on the orders of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord's Temple.
22 Le roi Joas ne se souvint pas de la bienveillance qu’avait eue pour lui Jehojada, père de Zacharie, et il fit périr son fils. Zacharie dit en mourant: Que l’Éternel voie, et qu’il fasse justice!
King Joash showed he had forgotten all about the loyalty and love shown to him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, by killing his son. As he died, Zechariah cried out, “May the Lord see what you've done and pay you back!”
23 Quand l’année fut révolue, l’armée des Syriens monta contre Joas, et vint en Juda et à Jérusalem. Ils tuèrent parmi le peuple tous les chefs du peuple, et ils envoyèrent au roi de Damas tout leur butin.
At the end of the year, the Aramean army came to attack Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem and killed all the people's leaders, and sent all their plunder back to the king of Damascus.
24 L’armée des Syriens arriva avec un petit nombre d’hommes; et cependant l’Éternel livra entre leurs mains une armée très considérable, parce qu’ils avaient abandonné l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères. Et les Syriens firent justice de Joas.
Even though the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the Lord gave them the victory over a very large army, because Judah had abandoned the Lord, the God of their forefathers. In this way they punished Joash.
25 Lorsqu’ils se furent éloignés de lui, après l’avoir laissé dans de grandes souffrances, ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui à cause du sang des fils du sacrificateur Jehojada; ils le tuèrent sur son lit, et il mourut. On l’enterra dans la ville de David, mais on ne l’enterra pas dans les sépulcres des rois.
When the Arameans departed, they left Joash badly wounded. But then his own officers plotted against him for murdering the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him in his bed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the cemetery of the kings.
26 Voici ceux qui conspirèrent contre lui: Zabad, fils de Schimeath, femme Ammonite, et Jozabad, fils de Schimrith, femme Moabite.
Those who plotted against him were Zabad, son of Shimeath, an Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith, a Moabite woman.
27 Pour ce qui concerne ses fils, le grand nombre de prophéties dont il fut l’objet, et les réparations faites à la maison de Dieu, cela est écrit dans les mémoires sur le livre des rois. Amatsia, son fils, régna à sa place.
The story of the sons of Joash, as well as the many prophecies about him and about the restoration of God's Temple, are recorded in the Commentary on the Book of the Kings. His son Amaziah took over as king.
