1 Samuel 11

1 Nachasch, l’Ammonite, vint assiéger Jabès en Galaad. Tous les habitants de Jabès dirent à Nachasch: Traite alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons.

And it came to pass about a month after this, that Naas the Ammanite went up, and encamped against Jabis Galaad: and all the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.

2 Mais Nachasch, l’Ammonite, leur répondit: Je traiterai avec vous à la condition que je vous crève à tous l’œil droit, et que j’imprime ainsi un opprobre sur tout Israël.

Naas the Ammanite said to them, On these terms will I make a covenant with you, that I should put out all your right eyes, and I will lay a reproach upon Israel.

3 Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent: Accorde-nous une trêve de sept jours, afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël; et s’il n’y a personne qui nous secoure, nous nous rendrons à toi.

And the men of Jabis say to him, Allow us seven days, and we will send messengers into all the coasts of Israel: if there should be no one to deliver us, we will come out to you.

4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibea de Saül, et dirent ces choses aux oreilles du peuple. Et tout le peuple éleva la voix, et pleura.

And the messengers came to Gabaa to Saul, and they speak the words into the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5 Et voici, Saül revenait des champs, derrière ses bœufs, et il dit: Qu’a donc le peuple pour pleurer? On lui raconta ce qu’avaient dit ceux de Jabès.

And, behold, Saul came after the early morning out of the field: and Saul said, Why does the people week? and they tell him the words of the men of Jabis.

6 Dès que Saül eut entendu ces choses, il fut saisi par l’esprit de Dieu, et sa colère s’enflamma fortement.

And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled against them.

7 Il prit une paire de bœufs, et les coupa en morceaux, qu’il envoya par les messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël, en disant: Quiconque ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, aura ses bœufs traités de la même manière. La terreur de l’Éternel s’empara du peuple, qui se mit en marche comme un seul homme.

And he took two cows, and cut them in pieces, and sent them into all the coasts of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whoso comes not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall they do to his oxen: and a transport from the Lord came upon the people of Israel, and they came out to battle as one man.

8 Saül en fit la revue à Bézek; les enfants d’Israël étaient trois cent mille, et les hommes de Juda trente mille.

And he reviews them at Bezec in Bama, every man of Israel six hundred thousand, and the men of Juda seventy thousand.

9 Ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: Vous parlerez ainsi aux habitants de Jabès en Galaad: Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera dans sa chaleur. Les messagers portèrent cette nouvelle à ceux de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie;

And he said to the messengers that came, Thus shall you say to the men of Jabis, To-morrow you shall have deliverance when the sun is hot; and the messengers came to the city, and told the men of Jabis, and they rejoiced.

10 et qui dirent aux Ammonites: Demain nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous traiterez comme bon vous semblera.

And the men of Jabis said to Naas the Ammanite, To-morrow we will come forth to you, and you shall do to us what seems good in your sight.

11 Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en trois corps. Ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites à la veille du matin, et ils les battirent jusqu’à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent furent dispersés, et il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Saul divided the people into three companies, and they go into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and they struck the children of Ammon until the day was hot; at it came to pass that those who were left were scattered, and there were not left amongst them two together.

12 Le peuple dit à Samuel: Qui est-ce qui disait: Saül régnera-t-il sur nous? Livrez ces gens, et nous les ferons mourir.

And the people said to Samuel, Who has said that Saul shall not reign over us? Give up the men, and we will put them to death.

13 Mais Saül dit: Personne ne sera mis à mort en ce jour, car aujourd’hui l’Éternel a opéré une délivrance en Israël.

And Saul said, No man shall die this day, for today the Lord has wrought deliverance in Israel.

14 Et Samuel dit au peuple: Venez, et allons à Guilgal, pour y confirmer la royauté.

And Samuel spoke to the people, saying, Let us go to Galgala, and there renew the kingdom.

15 Tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal, et ils établirent Saül pour roi, devant l’Éternel, à Guilgal. Là, ils offrirent des sacrifices d’actions de grâces devant l’Éternel; et là, Saül et tous les hommes d’Israël se livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.

And all the people went to Galgala, and Samuel anointed Saul there to be king before the Lord in Galgala, and there he offered meat-offerings and peace-offerings before the Lord: and Samuel and all Israel rejoiced exceedingly.
