1 Rois 8

1 Alors le roi Salomon assembla près de lui à Jérusalem les anciens d’Israël et tous les chefs des tribus, les chefs de famille des enfants d’Israël, pour transporter de la cité de David, qui est Sion, l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel.

And it came to pass when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and his own house after twenty years, then king Solomon assembled all the elders of Israel in Sion, to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the city of David, this is Sion,

2 Tous les hommes d’Israël se réunirent auprès du roi Salomon, au mois d’Éthanim, qui est le septième mois, pendant la fête.

in the month of Athanin.

3 Lorsque tous les anciens d’Israël furent arrivés, les sacrificateurs portèrent l’arche.

And the priests took up the ark,

4 Ils transportèrent l’arche de l’Éternel, la tente d’assignation, et tous les ustensiles sacrés qui étaient dans la tente: ce furent les sacrificateurs et les Lévites qui les transportèrent.

and the tabernacle of testimony, and the holy furniture that was in the tabernacle of testimony.

5 Le roi Salomon et toute l’assemblée d’Israël convoquée auprès de lui se tinrent devant l’arche. Ils sacrifièrent des brebis et des bœufs, qui ne purent être ni comptés, ni nombrés, à cause de leur multitude.

And the king and all Israel [were occupied] before the ark, sacrificing sheep [and] oxen, without number.

6 Les sacrificateurs portèrent l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel à sa place, dans le sanctuaire de la maison, dans le lieu très saint, sous les ailes des chérubins.

And the priests bring in the ark into its place, into the oracle of the house, even into the holy of holies, under the wings of the cherubs.

7 Car les chérubins avaient les ailes étendues sur la place de l’arche, et ils couvraient l’arche et ses barres par-dessus.

For the cherubs spread out their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubs covered the ark and its holy things above.

8 On avait donné aux barres une longueur telle que leurs extrémités se voyaient du lieu saint devant le sanctuaire, mais ne se voyaient point du dehors. Elles ont été là jusqu’à ce jour.

And the holy staves projected, and the ends of the holy staves appeared out of the holy places in front of the oracle, and were not seen without.

9 Il n’y avait dans l’arche que les deux tables de pierre, que Moïse y déposa en Horeb, lorsque l’Éternel fit alliance avec les enfants d’Israël, à leur sortie du pays d’Égypte.

There was nothing in the ark except the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant which Moses put [there] in Choreb, which [tables] the Lord made [as a covenant] with the children of Israel in their going forth from the land of Egypt.

10 Au moment où les sacrificateurs sortirent du lieu saint, la nuée remplit la maison de l’Éternel.

And it came to pass when the priests departed out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house.

11 Les sacrificateurs ne purent pas y rester pour faire le service, à cause de la nuée; car la gloire de l’Éternel remplissait la maison de l’Éternel.

And the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, because the glory of the Lord filled the house.

12 Alors Salomon dit: L’Éternel veut habiter dans l’obscurité!

13 J’ai bâti une maison qui sera ta demeure, un lieu où tu résideras éternellement!

14 Le roi tourna son visage, et bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël; et toute l’assemblée d’Israël était debout.

And the king turned his face, and the king blessed all Israel, (and the whole assembly of Israel stood: )

15 Et il dit: Béni soit l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, qui a parlé de sa bouche à David, mon père, et qui accomplit par sa puissance ce qu’il avait déclaré en disant:

and he said, Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel to-day, who spoke by his mouth concerning David my father, and has fulfilled it with his hands, saying,

16 Depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir d’Égypte mon peuple d’Israël, je n’ai point choisi de ville parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël pour qu’il y fût bâti une maison où résidât mon nom, mais j’ai choisi David pour qu’il régnât sur mon peuple d’Israël!

From the day that I brought out my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in [any] one tribe of Israel to build a house, so that my name should be there: but I chose Jerusalem that my name should be there, and I chose David to be over my people Israel.

17 David, mon père, avait l’intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël.

And it was in the heart of my father to build a house to the name of the Lord God of Israel.

18 Et l’Éternel dit à David, mon père: Puisque tu as eu l’intention de bâtir une maison à mon nom, tu as bien fait d’avoir eu cette intention.

And the Lord said to David my father, Forasmuch as it came into thine heart to build a house to my name, thou didst well that it came upon thine heart.

19 Seulement, ce ne sera pas toi qui bâtiras la maison; mais ce sera ton fils, sorti de tes entrailles, qui bâtira la maison à mon nom.

Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house, but thy son that has proceeded out of thy bowels, he shall build the house to my name.

20 L’Éternel a accompli la parole qu’il avait prononcée. Je me suis élevé à la place de David, mon père, et je me suis assis sur le trône d’Israël, comme l’avait annoncé l’Éternel, et j’ai bâti la maison au nom de l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël.

And the Lord has confirmed the word that he spoke, and I am risen up in the place of my father David, and I have sat down on the throne of Israel, as the Lord spoke, and I have built the house to the name of the Lord God of Israel.

21 J’y ai disposé un lieu pour l’arche où est l’alliance de l’Éternel, l’alliance qu’il a faite avec nos pères quand il les fit sortir du pays d’Égypte.

And I have set there a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord, which the Lord made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

22 Salomon se plaça devant l’autel de l’Éternel, en face de toute l’assemblée d’Israël. Il étendit ses mains vers le ciel, et il dit:

And Solomon stood up in front of the altar before all the congregation of Israel; and he spread out his hands toward heaven:

23 O Éternel, Dieu d’Israël! Il n’y a point de Dieu semblable à toi, ni en haut dans les cieux, ni en bas sur la terre: tu gardes l’alliance et la miséricorde envers tes serviteurs qui marchent en ta présence de tout leur cœur!

and he said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee in heaven above and on the earth beneath, keeping covenant and mercy with thy servant who walks before thee with all his heart;

24 Ainsi tu as tenu parole à ton serviteur David, mon père; et ce que tu as déclaré de ta bouche, tu l’accomplis en ce jour par ta puissance.

which thou hast kept toward thy servant David my father: for thou hast spoken by thy mouth and thou hast fulfilled it with thine hands, as [at] this day.

25 Maintenant, Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, observe la promesse que tu as faite à David, mon père, en disant: Tu ne manqueras jamais devant moi d’un successeur assis sur le trône d’Israël, pourvu que tes fils prennent garde à leur voie et qu’ils marchent en ma présence comme tu as marché en ma présence.

And now, O Lord God of Israel, keep for thy servant David my father, [the promises] which thou hast spoken to him, saying, There shall not be taken from thee a man sitting before me on the throne of Israel, provided only thy children shall take heed to their ways, to walk before me as thou hast walked before me.

26 Oh! Qu’elle s’accomplisse, Dieu d’Israël, la promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur David, mon père!

And now, O Lord God of Israel, let, I pray thee, thy word to David my father be confirmed.

27 Mais quoi! Dieu habiterait-il véritablement sur la terre? Voici, les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent te contenir: combien moins cette maison que je t’ai bâtie!

But will God indeed dwell with men upon the earth? if the heaven and heaven of heavens will not suffice thee, how much less even this house which I have built to thy name?

28 Toutefois, Éternel, mon Dieu, sois attentif à la prière de ton serviteur et à sa supplication; écoute le cri et la prière que t’adresse aujourd’hui ton serviteur.

Yet, O Lord God of Israel, thou shalt look upon my petition, to hear the prayer which thy servant prays to thee in thy presence this day,

29 Que tes yeux soient nuit et jour ouverts sur cette maison, sur le lieu dont tu as dit: Là sera mon nom! Écoute la prière que ton serviteur fait en ce lieu.

that thine eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place which thou saidst, My name shall be there, to hear the prayer which thy servant prays at this place day and night.

30 Daigne exaucer la supplication de ton serviteur et de ton peuple d’Israël, lorsqu’ils prieront en ce lieu! Exauce du lieu de ta demeure, des cieux, exauce et pardonne!

And thou shalt hearken to the prayer of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall pray toward this place; and thou shalt hear in thy dwelling-place in heaven, and thou shalt do and be gracious.

31 Si quelqu’un pèche contre son prochain et qu’on lui impose un serment pour le faire jurer, et s’il vient jurer devant ton autel, dans cette maison,

Whatsoever trespasses any [one] shall commit against his neighbour, —and if he shall take upon him an oath so that he should swear, and he shall come and make confession before thine altar in this house,

32 écoute-le des cieux, agis, et juge tes serviteurs; condamne le coupable, et fais retomber sa conduite sur sa tête; rends justice à l’innocent, et traite-le selon son innocence!

then shalt thou hear from heaven, and do, and thou shalt judge thy people Israel, that the wicked should be condemned, to recompense his way upon his head; and to justify the righteous, to give to him according to his righteousness.

33 Quand ton peuple d’Israël sera battu par l’ennemi, pour avoir péché contre toi; s’ils reviennent à toi et rendent gloire à ton nom, s’ils t’adressent des prières et des supplications dans cette maison,

When thy people Israel falls before enemies, because they shall sin against thee, and they shall return and confess to thy name, and they shall pray and supplicate in this house,

34 exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de ton peuple d’Israël, et ramène-les dans le pays que tu as donné à leurs pères!

then shalt thou hear from heaven, and be gracious to the sins of thy people Israel, and thou shalt restore them to the land which thou gavest to their fathers.

35 Quand le ciel sera fermé et qu’il n’y aura point de pluie, à cause de leurs péchés contre toi, s’ils prient dans ce lieu et rendent gloire à ton nom, et s’ils se détournent de leurs péchés, parce que tu les auras châtiés,

When the heaven is restrained, and there is no rain, because they shall sin against thee, and the shall pray toward this place, and they shall make confession to thy name, and shall turn from their sins when thou shalt have humbled them,

36 exauce-les des cieux, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple d’Israël, à qui tu enseigneras la bonne voie dans laquelle ils doivent marcher, et fais venir la pluie sur la terre que tu as donnée en héritage à ton peuple!

then thou shalt hear from heaven, and be merciful to the sins of thy servant and of thy people Israel; for thou shalt shew them the good way to walk in it, and thou shalt give rain upon the earth which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

37 Quand la famine, la peste, la rouille, la nielle, les sauterelles d’une espèce ou d’une autre, seront dans le pays, quand l’ennemi assiégera ton peuple dans son pays, dans ses portes, quand il y aura des fléaux ou des maladies quelconques;

If there should be famine, if there should be death, because there should be blasting, locust, or if there be mildew, and if their enemy oppress them in [any] one of their cities, [with regard to] every calamity, every trouble,

38 si un homme, si tout ton peuple d’Israël fait entendre des prières et des supplications, et que chacun reconnaisse la plaie de son cœur et étende les mains vers cette maison,

every prayer, every supplication whatever shall be made by any man, as they shall know each the plague of his heart, and shall spread abroad his hands to this house,

39 exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et pardonne; agis, et rends à chacun selon ses voies, toi qui connais le cœur de chacun, car seul tu connais le cœur de tous les enfants des hommes,

then shalt thou hearken from heaven, out of thine established dwelling-place, and shalt be merciful, and shalt do, and recompense to [every] man according to his ways, as thou shalt know his heart, for thou alone knowest the heart of all the children of men:

40 et ils te craindront tout le temps qu’ils vivront dans le pays que tu as donné à nos pères!

that they may fear thee all the days that they live upon the land, which thou hast given to our fathers.

41 Quand l’étranger, qui n’est pas de ton peuple d’Israël, viendra d’un pays lointain, à cause de ton nom,

And for the stranger who is not of thy people,

42 car on saura que ton nom est grand, ta main forte, et ton bras étendu, quand il viendra prier dans cette maison,

when they shall come and pray toward this place,

43 exauce-le des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, et accorde à cet étranger tout ce qu’il te demandera, afin que tous les peuples de la terre connaissent ton nom pour te craindre, comme ton peuple d’Israël, et sachent que ton nom est invoqué sur cette maison que j’ai bâtie!

then shalt thou hear [them] from heaven, out of thine established dwelling-place, and thou shalt do according to all that the stranger shall call upon thee for, that all the nations may know thy name, and fear thee, as [do] thy people Israel, and may know that thy name has been called on this house which I have builded.

44 Quand ton peuple sortira pour combattre son ennemi, en suivant la voie que tu lui auras prescrite; s’ils adressent à l’Éternel des prières, les regards tournés vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j’ai bâtie à ton nom,

[If it be] that thy people shall go forth to war against their enemies in the way by which thou shalt turn them, and pray in the name of the Lord toward the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name,

45 exauce des cieux leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit!

then shalt thou hear from heaven their supplication and their prayer, and shalt execute judgment for them.

46 Quand ils pécheront contre toi, car il n’y a point d’homme qui ne pèche, quand tu seras irrité contre eux et que tu les livreras à l’ennemi, qui les emmènera captifs dans un pays ennemi, lointain ou rapproché;

[If it be] that they shall sin against thee, (for there is not a man who will not sin, ) and thou shalt bring them and deliver them up before their enemies, and they that take [them] captive shall carry [them] to a land far or near,

47 s’ils rentrent en eux-mêmes dans le pays où ils seront captifs, s’ils reviennent à toi et t’adressent des supplications dans le pays de ceux qui les ont emmenés, et qu’ils disent: Nous avons péché, nous avons commis des iniquités, nous avons fait le mal!

and they shall turn their hearts in the land whither they have been carried captives, and turn in the land of their sojourning, and supplicate thee, saying, We have sinned, we have done unjustly, we have transgressed,

48 s’ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme, dans le pays de leurs ennemis qui les ont emmenés captifs, s’ils t’adressent des prières, les regards tournés vers leur pays que tu as donné à leurs pères, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers la maison que j’ai bâtie à ton nom,

and they shall turn to thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies whither thou hast carried them captives, and shall pray to thee toward their land which thou hast given to their fathers, and the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name:

49 exauce des cieux, du lieu de ta demeure, leurs prières et leurs supplications, et fais-leur droit;

then shalt thou hear from heaven thine established dwelling-place,

50 pardonne à ton peuple ses péchés et toutes ses transgressions contre toi; excite la compassion de ceux qui les retiennent captifs, afin qu’ils aient pitié d’eux,

and thou shalt be merciful to their unrighteousness wherein they have trespassed against thee, and according to all their transgressions wherewith they have transgressed against thee, and thou shalt cause them to be pitied before them that carried them captives, and they shall have compassion on them:

51 car ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage, et tu les as fait sortir d’Égypte, du milieu d’une fournaise de fer!

for [they are] thy people and thine inheritance, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, out of the midst of the furnace of iron.

52 Que tes yeux soient ouverts sur la supplication de ton serviteur et sur la supplication de ton peuple d’Israël, pour les exaucer en tout ce qu’ils te demanderont!

And let thine eyes and thine ears be opened to the supplication of thy servant, and to the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken to them in all things for which they shall call upon thee.

53 Car tu les as séparés de tous les autres peuples de la terre pour en faire ton héritage, comme tu l’as déclaré par Moïse, ton serviteur, quand tu fis sortir d’Égypte nos pères, Seigneur Éternel!

Because thou hast set them apart for an inheritance to thyself out of all the nations of the earth, as thou spokest by the hand of thy servant Moses, when thou broughtest our fathers out of the land of Egypt, O Lord God.

54 Lorsque Salomon eut achevé d’adresser à l’Éternel toute cette prière et cette supplication, il se leva de devant l’autel de l’Éternel, où il était agenouillé, les mains étendues vers le ciel.

And it came to pass when Solomon had finished praying to the Lord all this prayer and supplication, that he rose up from before the altar of the Lord, [after] having knelt upon his knees, and his hands [were] spread out towards heaven.

55 Debout, il bénit à haute voix toute l’assemblée d’Israël, en disant:

And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice, saying,

56 Béni soit l’Éternel, qui a donné du repos à son peuple d’Israël, selon toutes ses promesses! De toutes les bonnes paroles qu’il avait prononcées par Moïse, son serviteur, aucune n’est restée sans effet.

Blessed [be] the Lord this day, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he said: there has not failed one word among all his good words which he spoke by the hand of his servant Moses.

57 Que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, soit avec nous, comme il a été avec nos pères; qu’il ne nous abandonne point et ne nous délaisse point,

May the Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers; let him not desert us nor turn from us,

58 mais qu’il incline nos cœurs vers lui, afin que nous marchions dans toutes ses voies, et que nous observions ses commandements, ses lois et ses ordonnances, qu’il a prescrits à nos pères!

that he may turn our hearts toward him to walk in all his ways, and to keep all his commandments, and his ordinances which he commanded our fathers.

59 Que ces paroles, objet de mes supplications devant l’Éternel, soient jour et nuit présentes à l’Éternel, notre Dieu, et qu’il fasse en tout temps droit à son serviteur et à son peuple d’Israël,

And let these words, which I have prayed before the Lord our God, [be] near to the Lord our God day and night, to maintain the cause of thy servant, and the cause of thy people Israel for ever.

60 afin que tous les peuples de la terre reconnaissent que l’Éternel est Dieu, qu’il n’y en a point d’autre!

that all the nations of the earth may know that the Lord God, he [is] God, and there is none beside.

61 Que votre cœur soit tout à l’Éternel, notre Dieu, comme il l’est aujourd’hui, pour suivre ses lois et pour observer ses commandements.

And let our hearts be perfect toward the Lord our God, to walk also holily in his ordinances, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

62 Le roi et tout Israël avec lui offrirent des sacrifices devant l’Éternel.

And the king and all the children of Israel offered sacrifice before the Lord.

63 Salomon immola vingt-deux mille bœufs et cent vingt mille brebis pour le sacrifice d’actions de grâces qu’il offrit à l’Éternel. Ainsi le roi et tous les enfants d’Israël firent la dédicace de la maison de l’Éternel.

And king Solomon offered for the sacrifices of peace-offering which he sacrificed to the Lord, two and twenty thousand oxen, and hundred and twenty thousand sheep: and the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord.

64 En ce jour, le roi consacra le milieu du parvis, qui est devant la maison de l’Éternel; car il offrit là les holocaustes, les offrandes, et les graisses des sacrifices d’actions de grâces, parce que l’autel d’airain qui est devant l’Éternel était trop petit pour contenir les holocaustes, les offrandes, et les graisses des sacrifices d’actions de grâces.

In that day the king consecrated the middle of the court in the front of the house of the Lord; for there he offered the whole-burnt-offering, and the sacrifices, and the fat of the peace-offerings, because the brazen altar which was before the Lord [was too] little to bear the whole-burnt-offering and the sacrifices of peace-offerings.

65 Salomon célébra la fête en ce temps-là, et tout Israël avec lui. Une grande multitude, venue depuis les environs de Hamath jusqu’au torrent d’Égypte, s’assembla devant l’Éternel, notre Dieu, pendant sept jours, et sept autres jours, soit quatorze jours.

And Solomon kept the feast in that day, and all Israel with him, even a great assembly from the entering in of Hemath to the river of Egypt, before the Lord our God in the house which he built, eating and drinking, and rejoicing before the Lord our God seven days.

66 Le huitième jour, il renvoya le peuple. Et ils bénirent le roi, et s’en allèrent dans leurs tentes, joyeux et le cœur content pour tout le bien que l’Éternel avait fait à David, son serviteur, et à Israël, son peuple.

And on the eighth day he sent away the people: and they blessed the king, and each departed to his tabernacle rejoicing, and [their] heart [was] glad because of the good things which the Lord had done to his servant David, and to Israel his people.
