Psaumes 78
1 Psaume de méditation d'Asaph. O mon peuple, attachez-vous à ma loi; inclinez votre oreille vers les paroles de ma bouche.
Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 J'ouvrirai ma bouche en paraboles; je dirai les choses qui ont existé dès le commencement,
I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning.
3 Telles que vous les avez ouïes et connues, et que vos pères vous les ont racontées.
How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 Elles n'ont point été cachées à leurs enfants de la seconde génération, eux-mêmes leur ayant annoncé les louanges du Seigneur, et sa puissance et les merveilles qu'il a faites.
They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done.
5 Et il a suscité un témoignage en Jacob, et il a institué en Israël une loi qu'il a confiée à nos pères, pour qu'ils l'enseignassent à leurs enfants,
And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:
6 Afin que chaque génération les transmit à la suivante; les fils l'apprendront à ceux qui naîtront d'eux; et ils en porteront témoignage, et ils en instruiront leurs enfants:
That another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.
7 Afin qu'ils mettent en Dieu leur espérance, et qu'ils n'oublient point ses œuvres, et qu'ils recherchent ses commandements,
That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments.
8 Et qu'ils ne soient point comme leurs pères, race perverse et provocatrice, qui n'a pas eu de droiture de cœur, et, en son esprit, n'a pas été fidèle à Dieu.
That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse and exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
9 Les fils d'Éphraïm tendant l'arc, lançant des flèches, le jour du combat ont tourné le dos.
The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.
10 Ils n'ont point gardé l'alliance de Dieu, et ils ont refusé de marcher dans sa loi.
They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk.
11 Et ils ont oublié ses bienfaits, et les miracles qu'il leur a montrés,
And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.
12 Et les prodiges qu'il a faits devant leurs pères, en la terre d'Egypte et dans la plaine de Tanis.
Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.
13 Il a séparé la mer, et il les a fait passer; il a contenu les eaux, comme dans une outre.
He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.
14 Et il les a guidés le jour dans une nuée, et la nuit dans un luminaire de feu.
And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light of fire.
15 Il a fendu le rocher dans le désert, et il les a abreuvés comme avec l'eau d'un grand abîme.
He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.
16 Et de la pierre il a tiré et conduit l'eau comme un fleuve.
He brought forth water out of the rock: and made streams run down as rivers.
17 Et ils ont continué de pécher contre lui; ils ont provoqué le Très-Haut dans le désert;
And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.
18 Et ils ont tenté Dieu en leurs cœurs, en lui demandant des aliments pour leurs âmes.
And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires.
19 Et ils ont parlé contre Dieu, et ils ont dit: Est-ce que Dieu pourra nous préparer une table dans le désert?
And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Il a frappé le rocher: l'eau a jailli; un torrent a coulé avec abondance. Mais Dieu pourra-t-il nous donner aussi du pain, ou préparer dans le désert une table à son peuple?
Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?
21 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur, les ayant entendus, différa, et un feu fut allumé contre Jacob, et sa colère monta contre Israël;
Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.
22 Parce qu'ils n'avaient pas eu foi en Dieu, et qu'ils n'avaient point espéré en sa protection.
Because they believed not in God: and trusted not in his salvation.
23 Et d'en haut il donna ses ordres aux nues, et il ouvrit les portes du ciel.
And he had commanded the clouds from above, and had opened the doors of heaven.
24 Et il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour les nourrir, et il leur donna le pain du ciel.
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them the bread of heaven.
25 L'homme mangea le pain des anges; Dieu leur envoya des aliments en abondance.
Man ate the bread of angels: he sent them provisions in abundance.
26 Il chassa le vent du midi, et par sa puissance il amena le vent de l'occident.
He removed the south wind from heaven: and by his power brought in the southwest wind.
27 Et il fit pleuvoir pour eux de la chair comme des nuées de poussière, et des oiseaux emplumés comme le sable des mers.
And he rained upon them flesh as dust: and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.
28 Et ces oiseaux tombèrent au milieu de leur camp, autour de leurs tentes.
And they fell in the midst of their camp, round about their pavilions.
29 Et ils mangèrent, et ils furent rassasiés; et il satisfit leur désir.
So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire:
30 Rien ne leur manqua de ce qu'ils désiraient, et ils en avaient encore la bouche pleine.
They were not defrauded of that which they craved. As yet their meat was in their mouth:
31 Et la colère du Seigneur s'éleva contre eux, et il mit à mort leurs riches, et il saisit les élus d'Israël.
And the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones amongst them, and brought down the chosen men of Israel.
32 Et malgré tout cela ils péchèrent encore, et ne crurent point à ses prodiges.
In all these things they sinned still: and they believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Et leurs jours défaillirent en vanité, et leurs années se précipitèrent.
And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years in haste.
34 Quand il eut répandu parmi eux la mort, ils cherchèrent le Seigneur, et ils se convertirent à lui, et ils vinrent dès le matin vers Dieu.
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.
35 Et ils se souvinrent que Dieu est leur champion, et que Dieu le Très-Haut est leur rédempteur.
And they remembered that God was their helper: and the most high God their redeemer.
36 Et ils l'aimèrent de la bouche; mais leur langue lui mentait.
And they loved him with their mouth: and with their tongue they lied unto him:
37 Car leur cœur ne fut point droit envers lui, et ils ne furent point fidèles en son alliance.
But their heart was not right with him: nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.
38 Et cependant il est miséricordieux, et il leur remettra leurs péchés; et il ne les détruira point. Il détournera souvent sa colère, et son courroux ne s'enflammera pas tout entier.
But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: and will not destroy them. And many a time did he turn away his anger: and did not kindle all his wrath.
39 Et il se souvint qu'ils étaient chair, un souffle qui passe et ne revient plus.
And he remembered that they are flesh: a wind that goeth and returneth not.
40 Combien de fois l'ont-ils provoqué dans le désert, et l'ont-ils irrité dans la terre sans eau!
How often did they provoke him in the desert: and move him to wrath in the place without water?
41 Et ils se convertissaient, et ils recommençaient à tenter Dieu, et ils aigrissaient encore le Saint d'Israël.
And they turned back and tempted God: and grieved the holy one of Israel.
42 Ils avaient oublié sa main, et le jour où elle les avait tirés des mains de l'oppresseur;
They remembered not his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:
43 Et comment il avait fait ses miracles en Egypte, et ses prodiges dans la plaine de Tanis;
How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
44 Et comment il avait changé en sang leurs fleuves et leurs pluies, afin qu'ils ne pussent boire;
And he turned their rivers into blood, and their showers that they might, not drink.
45 Et comment il avait envoyé des mouches de chien qui les dévoraient, et des grenouilles qui les détruisaient.
He sent amongst them divers sores of flies, which devoured them: and frogs which destroyed them.
46 Ils avaient oublié la nielle attachée à leurs fruits, et les sauterelles dont ils avaient souffert,
And he gave up their fruits to the blast, and their labours to the locust.
47 Et la grêle détruisant leurs vignes, et la gelée faisant périr leurs mûriers,
And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.
48 Et les grêlons exterminant leur bétail, et le feu consumant leurs richesses,
And he gave up their cattle to the hail, and their stock to the fire.
49 Et sa colère et son indignation tombant sur eux; colère, fureur, afflictions, envois d'anges exterminateurs;
And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.
50 Et la voie ouverte à son courroux, et son dessein de ne point épargner leur vie, et d'enclore leurs troupeaux, dans la mort;
He made a way for a path to his anger: he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.
51 Et le coup dont fut frappé tout premier-né en la terre d'Egypte, prémices de leurs peines sous leurs tentes de Cham;
And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.
52 Et le soin qu'il prit d'enlever son peuple comme des brebis, et de les conduire dans le désert, comme un troupeau;
And he took away his own people as sheep: and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 Et les espérances qu'il leur donna, et les craintes dont il les délivra, et la mer qui couvrit leurs ennemis.
And he brought them out in hope, and they feared not: band the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Et il les mena sur la montagne qu'il s'était consacrée, cette montagne que sa droite avait acquise. Et il chassa les nations devant leur face, et il leur distribua, à grandes mesures, la terre de leur héritage.
And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: the mountain which his right hand had purchased. And he cast out the Gentiles before them: and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.
55 Et il établit les tribus d'Israël dans les demeures des vaincus.
And he made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.
56 Mais elles tentèrent et provoquèrent Dieu le Très-Haut; elles ne gardèrent point ses témoignages.
Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: and they kept not his testimonies.
57 Et son peuple, se détournant de lui, s'endurcit comme ses pères; il devint comme un arc tortu.
And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.
58 Et ils provoquèrent la colère de Dieu sur leurs hauts lieux; et ils le rendirent jaloux par leurs images sculptées.
They provoked him to anger on their hills: and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.
59 Dieu les entendit et les méprisa, et réduisit à néant Israël.
God heard, and despised them, and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.
60 Et il répudia le tabernacle de Silo, son tabernacle où il résidait parmi les hommes.
And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.
61 Et il livra à la captivité leur force, aux ennemis leur beauté.
And he delivered their strength into captivity: and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.
62 Et il exposa son peuple au glaive, et il dédaigna son propre héritage.
And he shut up his people under the sword: and he despised his inheritance.
63 La flamme dévora leurs jeunes hommes, et leurs vierges ne furent point pleurées.
Fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not lamented.
64 Leurs prêtres tombèrent sous le glaive, et leurs veuves ne furent point pleurées.
Their priests fell by the sword: and their widows did not mourn.
65 Et le Seigneur s'éveilla comme un homme endormi, ou comme un riche après l'ivresse.
And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.
66 Et il frappa ses ennemis comme ils tournaient le dos, et il les couvrit d'un opprobre éternel.
And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: he put them to an everlasting reproach.
67 Et il répudia le tabernacle de Joseph, et il ne choisit point la tribu d'Éphraïm.
And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 Et il choisit la tribu de Juda, et la montagne de Sion, qu'il a aimée.
But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved.
69 Et il bâtit son sanctuaire, fort comme la corne des licornes, en la terre qu'il a fondée pour les siècles des siècles.
And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever.
70 Et il choisit David son serviteur, et il le tira de la garde des troupeaux; il le prit tandis qu'il surveillait les brebis mères,
And he chose his servant David, and took him from the hocks of sheep: he brought him from following the ewes great with young,
71 Pour qu'il fût le pasteur de Jacob, son serviteur, et d'Israël, son héritage.
To feed Jacob his servant, and Israel his inheritance.
72 Et David prit soin d'eux en l'innocence de son cœur, et il les mena dans la voie selon l'intelligence de ses mains.
And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: and conducted them by the skillfulness of his hands.
