Proverbes 25
1 Voici maintenant les sentences du roi Salomon qui n'ont point été classées et qu'ont transcrites les amis d'Ézéchias, roi de la Judée.
Also these are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah the king of Judah have collected.
2 La gloire de Dieu cèle sa parole; la gloire d'un roi apprécie toute chose.
It is the honor of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
3 Le ciel est haut, la mer est profonde; mais le cœur d'un roi ne peut être sondé.
As are the heavens for height, and the earth is for depth, so should the heart of kings be unsearchable.
4 Bats de l'argent rouillé, et il sera tout à fait purifié.
Take away the dross from the silver, and there will come forth a vessel for the melter.
5 Extermine les impies devant le roi, et son trône se maintiendra dans la justice.
Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be firmly established in righteousness.
6 Ne te vante pas en présence du roi; ne promets rien dans les demeures des princes.
Do not glorify thyself in the presence of the king, and force thyself not into the place of great men;
7 Car il vaut mieux que l'on te dise: Viens auprès de moi, que de t'humilier en présence d'un prince. Ne dis rien que tes yeux ne l'aient vu.
For better it is that it be said unto thee, “Come up hither,” than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince, which thy own eyes have [often] seen.
8 Ne t'engage pas inopinément dans une querelle, de peur que tu ne t'en repentes à la fin. Si ton ami vient à te réprimander,
Do not proceed to a contest hastily, lest [thou know not] what thou wilt have to do at its end, when thy neighbor hath put thee to confusion.
9 retire-toi dans le secret avec lui, et ne le méprise pas,
Carry on thy cause with thy neighbor; but lay not open the secret of another:
10 de peur que ton ami n'en vienne aux reproches; car alors ce seraient des querelles et des haines sans fin, et qui seraient pour toi comme la mort. La grâce et l'amitié nous délivrent de tout mal; conserve-les en toi, pour ne point devenir un sujet d'outrages, et garde tes voies dans la paix.
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy never be removed.
11 Parler raison vaut un collier de cornaline mêlé de grains d'or.
Like apples of gold among figures of silver is a word spoken in a proper manner.
12 Une sage parole, dans une oreille docile, vaut un pendant d'oreille où l'or est entrelacé de cornalines de grand prix.
As an earring of gold, and a pendant of fine gold, so is a wise reprover toward an ear that listeneth.
13 Le messager fidèle est, pour ceux qui l'envoient, aussi agréable que le serait la neige au temps de la moisson; il réjouit le cœur de ceux qui l'ont envoyé.
As the cooling of snow on a harvest-day, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.
14 L'homme qui se glorifie d'un présent trompeur ne vaut pas mieux que des fléaux éclatants, tels que la tempête, les sombres nuées ou les torrents de pluie.
Like clouds and wind without rain, so is a man that vaunteth falsely of a gift.
15 La patience fait la prospérité des rois, et une langue douce amollit jusqu'aux os.
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh bones.
16 Si tu trouves du miel, n'en mange que ce qui te suffit, de peur que tu ne vomisses, si tu t'en es gorgé.
Hast thou found honey: eat so much as is sufficient for thee: lest thou consume too much of it, and have to vomit it forth.
17 Entre rarement chez ton ami, de peur que, rassasié de toi, il ne te prenne en haine.
Make thy foot scarce in the house of thy friend: lest he have too much of thee, and so hate thee.
18 L'homme qui porte contre son ami un faux témoignage ressemble à une massue, à un glaive, à une flèche acérée.
A battle-axe, and a sword, and a sharpened arrow is a man that testifieth as a false witness against his neighbor.
19 La dent du méchant et le pied du pervers seront détruits au jour de l'adversité.
Like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint, is confidence in a treacherous man in a time of distress.
20 Comme le vinaigre ne vaut rien à un ulcère, ainsi la douleur du corps attriste le cœur; et comme le bois est rongé par la pourriture, et les vêtements par un ver, ainsi le cœur de l'homme est rongé par la tristesse.
[As] he that taketh off his garment on a cold day, [as] vinegar is upon natron: so is he that singeth songs before an unhappy heart.
21 Si ton ennemi a faim, nourris-le; s'il a soif, donne-lui à boire.
If thy enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 En agissant ainsi, tu amasseras sur sa tête des charbons ardents, et le Seigneur te comblera de biens.
For though thou gatherest coals of fire upon his head, yet will the Lord repay it unto thee.
23 L'aquilon, excite les nuées; un front sans pudeur irrite la langue.
The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth secret talking, angry countenances.
24 Mieux vaut demeurer dans un coin de la terrasse qu'avec une femme querelleuse, en une maison commune.
It is better to dwell in the corner of a roof, than with a quarrelsome woman even in a roomy house.
25 Comme l'eau fraîche est douce à une âme altérée, ainsi est bonne la nouvelle arrivant d'une terre lointaine.
As cold water is to a fainting soul, so are good news from a far-off country.
26 Si quelqu'un ferme un puits ou corrompt une source d'eau, c'est une chose funeste comme un juste tombant en présence de l'impie.
Like a turbid spring and a corrupt fountain, is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
27 Il n'est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel; mais il est juste d'honorer les sages discours.
To eat too much honey is not good: so is it honor to set a limit to men's honor.
28 Comme une ville dont les remparts sont renversés, et qui n'est plus fortifiée, ainsi est un homme qui agit sans conseil.
Like a city that is broken in, and is without walls: so is the man that hath no control over his spirit.
