Proverbes 24
1 Mon fils, ne rivalise point avec les méchants, et ne désire pas être avec eux.
Be thou not envious of bad men, and do not long to be with them.
2 Car leur cœur médite des fraudes, et leurs lèvres disent des paroles affligeantes.
For their heart meditateth destruction, and of mischief do their lips speak.
3 La sagesse bâtit sa maison; l'intelligence la dirige;
Through wisdom is a house built; and through understanding is it firmly established;
4 avec la doctrine on remplit les celliers de tout ce qu'il y a de riche, de précieux et de bon.
And through knowledge are chambers filled with all manner of precious and pleasant wealth.
5 Mieux vaut le sage que le fort, et un homme de bon sens que de vastes domaines.
A wise man is [always] in power; and a man of knowledge fortifieth [his] strength.
6 Avec l'art de gouverner, on conduit la guerre; avec un cœur résolu, on trouve le salut.
For by wise counsel canst thou conduct thy war; and there is help in a multitude of counsellors.
7 La sagesse et les bonnes pensées sont à la porte des sages; les sages ne se détournent pas de la parole du Seigneur.
Wisdom is too high for a fool: in the gate can he not open his mouth.
8 Mais ils sont appréciés dans les conseils. la mort surprend les imprudents.
Him that deviseth to do evil, men call a master of wicked devices.
9 L'insensé meurt dans son péché. L'impureté est dans l'homme de pestilence;
The counsel of folly is sin; and an abomination to men is the scorner.
10 il sera déshonoré au jour fatal, au jour de la tribulation, jusqu'à ce qu'il soit renversé.
If thou despond on the day of distress, thy strength is small.
11 Délivre ceux que l'on conduit à la mort; rachète ceux qu'on va faire mourir, et n'y épargne pas tes soins.
Deliver those that are taken unto death, and those that are moved away to the slaughter hold back.
12 Si tu dis: Je ne connais pas cet homme; sache que Dieu connaît tous les cœurs; Celui qui a donné le souffle à tous, sait toutes choses, et Il rétribue chacun selon ses œuvres.
If thou shouldst say, Behold, we know not this man: lo, he that weigheth hearts will truly regard it, and he that keepeth thy soul will surely know it; and he will give a recompense to man according to his doing.
13 Mon fils, mange du miel; car le rayon de miel est bon; que ton gosier en goûte la douceur.
Eat honey, my son, because it is good; and the fine honey, which is sweet to thy palate:
14 C'est ainsi que tu feras comprendre la sagesse à ton âme; car si tu l'acquiers, ta fin sera bonne, et l'espérance ne t'abandonnera point.
So obtain the knowledge of wisdom for thy soul: when thou hast found her, then shall there be a [happy] future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
15 Ne conduis pas l'impie dans les pâturages des justes; ne te laisse pas séduire par l'appât de la gourmandise.
Lie not in wait, O wicked man! against the dwelling of the righteous; waste not his resting-place;
16 Car le juste tombera sept fois, et il se relèvera; mais les impies seront sans force dans le malheur.
For though the righteous were to fall seven times, he will rise up again; but the wicked shall stumble into misfortune.
17 Si ton ennemi tombe, ne te moque pas de lui, et ne t'enorgueillis pas de sa ruine.
At the fall of thy enemy do not rejoice; and at his stumbling let not thy heart be glad:
18 Car le Seigneur te verrait, et Il ne t'aurait point pour agréable, et Il détournerait Sa colère de ton ennemi.
Lest the Lord see it and it be displeasing in his eyes, and he turn away from him his wrath.
19 Ne prends point part aux joies des méchants; ne porte point envie aux pécheurs.
Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious of the wicked;
20 Car les pervers n'auront point de postérité, et la langue des impies s'éteindra.
For there will be no [happy] future for the bad man: the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.
21 Crains Dieu et le roi, mon fils, et ne leur désobéis jamais.
My son, fear the Lord and the king: with those that are desirous to change do not mingle thyself;
22 Car ils punissent inopinément les impies; et qui peut prévoir quelle sera leur vengeance?
For suddenly will their calamity arise; and who knoweth the ruin of both of them!
23 Qu'aucun mensonge se soit dit par la langue du roi; que nulle fausseté ne sorte de sa langue. Voici ce que je dis, à vous sages, pour que vous le sachiez: Il n'est pas bien, en justice, d'avoir égard au rang.
These things also are for the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.
24 La langue du roi n'est point de chair, c'est un glaive; et celui qui lui sera livré, sera brisé; Ceux qui disent de l'impie: C'est un juste, seront maudits du peuple et odieux aux nations.
Him that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, will the people denounce, him will nations hold accursed;
25 car si sa colère est excitée, elle détruit les hommes avec leurs nerfs; Mais ceux qui le réprimandent paraîtront meilleurs, et la bénédiction viendra sur eux.
But to those that punish delight shall be given, and upon them shall come the blessing of the good.
26 elle dévore leurs os, elles les consume comme la flamme, au point que les aiglons n'y trouveraient pas de quoi se repaître. On baisera les livres qui diront de bonnes paroles.
Men will kiss the lips of him that giveth a proper answer.
27 Prépare ton ouvrage au dehors; arrive à ton champ, tout préparé; marche sur mes traces, et tu réédifieras ta maison.
Prepare without thy work, and make it fit in the field for thyself: and afterward build thy house.
28 Ne porte pas contre un concitoyen de faux témoignage, et n'ouvre pas les lèvres contre lui.
Be not without cause a witness against thy neighbor; for wouldst thou beguile with thy lips?
29 Ne dis pas: Comme il m'a traité, je le traiterai; je me vengerai du tort qu'il m'a fait.
Say not, As he hath done to me so will I do to him: I will recompense every man according to his doing.
30 L'insensé est comme un champ; l'homme qui manque d'esprit est comme un vignoble.
By the field of a slothful man I once passed along, and by the vineyard of a man void of sense:
31 Si tu le délaisses, il sera stérile et tout couvert de mauvaises herbes; il dépérit, et sa clôture de pierres s'écroule.
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, nettles had covered its surface, and its stone-wall was broken down.
32 À la fin, j'ai réfléchi et j'ai songé à chercher la vraie doctrine.
And when I had indeed beheld [this] I took it to my heart: I saw it, and received a warning.
33 Je sommeille un moment; un moment je m'endors, et je me tiens un moment les bras croisés.
“A little [more] sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in lying down;”
34 Si tu fais cela, l'indigence t'arrivera à grands pas, et le besoin fondra sur toi comme un agile coursier.
But then will thy poverty come like a rover; and thy wants as a man armed with a shield.
