Proverbes 14
1 Les femmes sages bâtissent leurs maisons; l'insensée les détruit de ses mains.
A wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish will pull down with her hands that also which is built.
2 Celui qui marche droit craint le Seigneur; celui qui s'avance en des voies tortueuses sera déshonoré.
He that walketh in the right way, and feareth God, Cis despised by him that goeth by an infamous way.
3 Une verge d'orgueil sort de la bouche des insensés; les lèvres des sages les gardent eux-mêmes.
In the mouth of a fool is the rod of pride: but the lips of the wise preserve them.
4 Où il n'y a point de bœufs, la crèche est vide; où il y a abondance de grains, la force des bœufs est manifeste.
Where there are no oxen, the crib is empty: but where there is much corn, there the strength of the ox is manifest.
5 Le témoin fidèle ne ment pas; le faux témoin est un brandon de mensonges.
A faithful witness will not lie: but a deceitful witness uttereth a lie.
6 Tu chercheras la sagesse parmi les méchants, et tu ne la trouveras pas; auprès des sages, le discernement est sous ta main.
A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: the learning of the wise is easy.
7 Toutes choses sont contraires à l'insensé; des lèvres sages sont l'arme de la doctrine.
Go against a foolish man, and he knoweth not the lips of prudence.
8 La sagesse des habiles éclaire leurs voies; l'irréflexion des insensés les conduit à l'erreur.
The wisdom of a. discreet man is to understand his way: and the imprudence of fools erreth.
9 Les demeures des méchants ont besoin d'être purifiées; la maison des justes est agréable.
A fool will laugh at sin, but among the just grace shall abide.
10 Le cœur de l'homme est inquiet; son âme est triste, et, lorsqu'il se réjouit, c'est qu'il ne se mêle point de honte à sa joie.
The heart that knoweth the bitterness of his own soul, in his joy the stranger shall not intermeddle.
11 Les maisons des impies seront effacées; les tentes des cœurs droits resteront debout.
The house of the wicked shall be destroyed: but the tabernacles of the just shall flourish.
12 Il est une voie qui aux hommes semble droite; mais elle aboutit aux abîmes de l'enfer. (questioned)
There is a way which seemeth just to a man: but the ends thereof lead to death.
13 La tristesse ne se mêle point aux joies sages; toujours le deuil succède aux fausses joies.
Laughter shall be mingled with sorrow, and mourning taketh hold of the end of joy.
14 Le cœur audacieux s'enorgueillit de ses voies; l'homme bon se complaît en ses pensées.
A fool shall be filled with his own ways, and the good man shall be above him.
15 L'ingénuité est crédule; l'expérience mène aux regrets.
The innocent believeth every word: the discreet man considereth his steps. No good shall come to the deceitful son: but the wise servant shall prosper in his dealings, and his way shall be made straight.
16 Le sage a peur et se détourne du méchant; l'insensé, confiant en lui- même, se mêle aux pervers.
A wise man feareth and declineth from evil: the fool leapeth over and is confident.
17 L'homme irascible agit sans réflexion; l'homme sensé supporte beaucoup.
The impatient man shall work folly: and the crafty man is hateful.
18 Les insensés ont le mal en partage; l'homme habile est maître de la science.
The childish shall possess folly, and the prudent, shall look for knowledge.
19 Les mauvais tomberont devant les bons; les impies seront des serviteurs aux portes des justes.
The evil shall fall down before the good: and the wicked before the gates of the just.
20 On n'aime pas les amis des pauvres; mais les amis des riches sont nombreux.
The poor man shall be hateful even to his own neighbour: but the friends of the rich are many.
21 Mépriser les indigents, c'est pécher; avoir compassion des pauvres, c'est se ménager la plus grande joie.
He that despiseth his neighbour, sinneth: but he that sheweth mercy to the poor, shall be blessed. He that believeth in the Lord, loveth mercy.
22 Les cœurs égarés songent au mal; les bons songent à la miséricorde et à la vérité; ceux qui commettent le mal ne connaissent ni miséricorde ni vérité; les miséricordes et la fidélité sont à ceux qui font le bien.
They err that work evil: but mercy and truth prepare good things.
23 Tout homme diligent a le superflu; tout homme ami des douceurs et des plaisirs sera dans l'indigence.
In much work there shall be abundance: but where there are many words, there is oftentimes want.
24 La couronne des sages est l'activité; le travail des injustes est mauvais.
The crown of the wise is their riches: the folly of fools, imprudence.
25 Le témoin fidèle délivrera son âme du mal; le témoin trompeur est un brandon de mensonges.
A faithful witness delivereth souls: and the double dealer uttereth lies.
26 Dans la crainte du Seigneur est l'espérance de la force; il laissera à ses enfants un appui.
In the fear of the Lord is confidence of strength, and there shall be hope for his children.
27 Les commandements du Seigneur sont une source de vie; ils nous font détourner des pièges de la mort.
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to decline from the ruin of death.
28 La gloire d'un roi est dans la multitude de la nation; son affliction, dans le petit nombre de ses sujets.
In the multitude of people is the dignity of the king: and in the small number of people the dishonour of the prince.
29 L'homme patient est un vrai sage; l'impatient, un insensé.
He that is patient, is governed with much wisdom: but he that is impatient, exalteth his folly.
30 L'homme qui a bon cœur est le médecin de l'âme; un cœur trop sensible est un ver qui ronge les os.
Soundness of heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones.
31 Tromper l'indigent, c'est irriter son Créateur; celui qui honore Dieu a compassion du pauvre.
He that oppresseth the poor, upbraideth his Maker: but he that hath pity on the poor, honoureth him.
32 L'impie sera rejeté à cause de sa malice; l'homme ferme en sa propre sainteté est vraiment juste.
The wicked man shall be driven out in his wickedness: but the just hath hope in his death.
33 Dans le bon cœur d'un homme on trouve la sagesse; on ne la trouvera pas dans le cœur de l'insensé.
In the heart of the prudent resteth wisdom, and it shall instruct all the ignorant.
34 La justice élève une nation; les péchés amoindrissent un peuple.
Justice exalteth a nation: but sin maketh nations miserable.
35 Le serviteur prudent est agréable au prince, et par sa dextérité il évite la disgrâce.
A wise servant is acceptable to the king: he that is good for nothing shall feel his anger.
