Proverbes 1
1 Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, qui régna en Israël,
The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, who reigned in Israel;
2 pour faire connaître la sagesse et la discipline; pour apprendre les paroles de la prudence;
to know wisdom and instruction, and to perceive words of understanding;
3 pour montrer les artifices des discours; pour enseigner vraiment la justice, pour instruire à juger avec rectitude;
to receive also hard saying, and to understand true justice, and [how] to direct judgement;
4 pour donner aux innocents la sagacité, aux jeunes gens la doctrine et l'intelligence.
that he might give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man discernment and understanding.
5 Car le sage qui les aura ouïs sera plus sage, et l'homme entendu saura l'art de gouverner.
For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and man of understanding will gain direction;
6 Il pénétrera la parabole et le sens voilé, et les paroles des sages, et leurs énigmes.
and will understand a parable, and a dark speech; the saying of the wise also, and riddles.
7 La crainte du Seigneur est le commencement de la sagesse; la prudence est bonne à tous ceux qui la mettent en pratique; la piété envers Dieu est le principe de la sagesse; les insensés méprisent la sagesse et la doctrine.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and [there is] good understanding to all that practise it: and piety towards God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nothing wisdom and instruction.
8 Écoute, mon fils, les instructions de ton père, et ne repousse pas la loi de ta mère
Hear, [my] son, the instruction of your father, and reject not the rules of your mother.
9 et tu ajouteras une couronne de grâces à ta tête, et à ton cou un collier d'or.
For you shall receive for your head a crown of graces, and a chain of gold round your neck.
10 Mon fils, prends garde que les impies ne t'égarent; ne leur donne pas ton consentement.
[My] son, let not ungodly men lead you astray, neither consent you [to them].
11 S'ils te convient, disant: Viens avec nous, prends ta part du sang; cachons en terre injustement l'homme juste;
If they should exhort you, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth:
12 engloutissons-le tout vivant, comme dans l'enfer, et effaçons de la terre tout souvenir de lui. (Sheol h7585)
and let us swallow him alive, as Hades [would], and remove the memorial of him from the earth: (Sheol h7585)
13 Emparons-nous de ses richesses les plus précieuses, et remplissons nos demeures de ses dépouilles.
let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils:
14 Mets ta part avec la nôtre; faisons tous bourse commune et n'ayons qu'un trésor.
but do you cast in your lot with us, and let us all provide a common purse, and let us have one pouch:
15 Mon fils, ne vas pas en leur voie; éloigne ton pied de leurs sentiers;
go not in the way with them, but turn aside your foot from their paths:
16 Car leurs pieds courent au mal, ils se hâtent pour répandre le sang.
[For their feet run to do evil, and are swift to shed blood. ]
17 car ce n'est pas vainement qu'on tend des filets aux oiseaux.
for nets are not without cause spread for birds.
18 Mais ceux qui participent à un meurtre thésaurisent pour eux des malheurs; et la chute des pervers est funeste.
For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil.
19 Telles sont les voies de tous les ouvriers d'iniquité; par leur impiété, ils détruisent leur propre vie.
These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.
20 La Sagesse chante dans les rues; elle parle librement au milieu des places.
Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.
21 Et du haut des remparts elle crie comme un héraut, et elle s'assied devant les portes des riches; et aux portes de la cité, pleine d'assurance, elle dit:
And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,
22 Tant que les innocents s'attacheront à la justice, ils ne seront point humiliés; quant aux insensés, pleins de désirs honteux, devenus impies, ils haïssent la science,
So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.
23 et sont exposés aux opprobres. Voilà que je vais proférer pour vous les paroles de mon esprit; je vais vous enseigner mes discours.
Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.
24 J'ai appelé, et vous n'avez point obéi; j'ai parlé longuement, et vous n'étiez pas attentifs;
Since I called, and you did not listen; and I spoke at length, and you gave no heed;
25 mais vous avez mis à néant mes conseils, et vous avez été rebelles à mes réprimandes.
but you set at nothing my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;
26 Aussi moi je rirai au jour de votre perte, et je me réjouirai quand viendra votre ruine,
therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against [you] when ruin comes upon you:
27 et quand soudain le trouble fondra sur vous, et que votre catastrophe sera là comme une tempête, et quand viendra sur vous la tribulation et l'oppression, et enfin la mort.
yes when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and [your] overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.
28 Car alors vous m'invoquerez; mais moi je ne vous écouterai point; les méchants me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas.
For it shall be that when you call upon me, I will not listen to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find [me].
29 Car ils haïssent la Sagesse; et ils n'ont point choisi de préférence la parole du Seigneur.
For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:
30 Et ils n'ont point voulu être attentifs à mes conseils; et ils se sont raillés de mes reproches.
neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.
31 Aussi mangeront-ils les fruits de leurs voies; et ils se rassasieront de leur propre impiété.
Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.
32 Car ils seront mis à mort, pour avoir fait tort aux petits; et l'examen de leur cause perdra les impies.
For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.
33 Tandis que celui qui m'écoute s'abritera sous l'espérance, et se reposera sans avoir à craindre aucun mal.
But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.
