1 Les fils d'Israël, étant partis, campèrent à l'ouest de Moab, sur les rives du Jourdain, en face de Jéricho.
And the sons of Israel journey and encamp in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, [by] Jericho.
2 Or, Balac, fils de Séphor, avait vu comme Israël venait de traiter l'Amorrhéen
And Balak son of Zippor sees all that Israel has done to the Amorite,
3 Moab eut donc grande crainte du peuple qui était très-nombreux; Moab fut saisi d'effroi à l'aspect des fils d'Israël,
and Moab is exceedingly afraid of the presence of the people, for it [is] numerous; and Moab is distressed by the presence of the sons of Israel,
4 Et dit aux anciens de Madian: Ce peuple va maintenant nous dévorer, comme un veau dévore l'herbe des champs; il va dévorer tout ce qui l'entoure. En ce temps-là Balac, fils de Séphor, était roi de Moab.
and Moab says to [the] elderly of Midian, “Now the assembly licks up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the green thing of the field.” And Balak son of Zippor [is] king of Moab at that time,
5 Et il envoya des anciens à Phathura, qui est sur la rivière du territoire des fils de son peuple, pour appeler Balaam, fils de Béor, disant: Voilà qu'un peuple est venu d'Egypte, il couvre la face de la terre, il est campé tout près de moi;
and he sends messengers to Balaam son of Beor, to Pethor, which [is] by the River of the land of the sons of his people, to call for him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt; behold, it has covered the eye of the land, and it is abiding in front of me;
6 Viens donc, et maudis ce peuple, car il est plus puissant que nous; si nous pouvions les frapper séparément, je les chasserais de cette terre. Or, je le sais, ceux que tu bénis sont bénis, ceux que tu maudis sont maudits.
and now, come, please curse this people for me, for it [is] mightier than I. It may be I prevail, [and] we strike it, and I cast it out from the land; for I have known that which you bless is blessed, and that which you curse is cursed.”
7 Et les anciens de Moab, portant des présents, partirent avec les anciens des Madianites; arrivés chez Balaam, ils lui répétèrent les paroles de Balac,
And [the] elderly of Moab and [the] elderly of Midian go with divinations in their hand, and they come to Balaam and speak the words of Balak to him,
8 Et il leur dit: Reposez-vous ici cette nuit, et je vous rapporterai ce que m'aura dit le Seigneur; les princes de Moab demeurèrent donc chez Balaam.
and he says to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I have brought you back word, as YHWH speaks to me”; and the princes of Moab abide with Balaam.
9 Et Dieu dit à Balaam: Qui sont ces hommes que tu as chez toi?
And God comes to Balaam and says, “Who [are] these men with you?”
10 Balaam répondit à Dieu: Balac, fils de Séphor, roi de Moab, me les a envoyés, disant:
And Balaam says to God, “Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me:
11 Un peuple est venu d'Egypte, il couvre la face de la terre, et il est campé tout près de moi; viens donc et maudis-le; peut-être pourrai-je ainsi le vaincre et le chasser de la contrée.
Behold, the people that is coming out from Egypt and covers the eye of the land—now come, pierce it for me; it may be I am able to fight against it and have cast it out”;
12 Dieu dit à Balaam; tu ne partiras pas avec eux; tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.
and God says to Balaam, “You do not go with them; you do not curse the people, for it [is] blessed.”
13 S'étant donc levé de grand matin, Balaam dit aux princes de Balac: Retournez vers votre maître, Dieu ne me permet pas de partir avec vous.
And Balaam rises in the morning and says to the princes of Balak, “Go to your land, for YHWH is refusing to permit me to go with you”;
14 Et les princes de Moab, s'étant levés, arrivèrent chez Balac, disant: Balaam ne veut pas venir avec nous.
and the princes of Moab rise, and come to Balak, and say, “Balaam is refusing to come with us.”
15 Balac lui envoya des chefs plus nombreux et plus en honneur que les premiers,
And Balak adds yet to send princes, more numerous and honored than these,
16 Ils allèrent chez Balaam, et ils lui dirent: Voici ce que dit Balac: Je t'en supplie, ne tarde pas à venir chez moi,
and they come to Balaam and say to him, “Thus said Balak son of Zippor: Please do not be withheld from coming to me,
17 Je te comblerai d'honneurs; tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te l'accorderai; mais viens et maudis ce peuple.
for I honor you very greatly, and all that you say to me I do; and come, please pierce this people for me.”
18 Balaam répondit aux princes de Balac: Balac dut-il me donner plein sa maison d'argent et d'or, il m'est impossible de ne pas tenir compte de la parole du Seigneur Dieu, ni de songer à faire plus ou moins qu'il ne m'a dit.
And Balaam answers and says to the servants of Balak, “If Balak gives to me the fullness of his house of silver and gold, I am not able to pass over the command of my God YHWH, to do a little or a great thing;
19 Vous aussi restez donc cette nuit chez moi, et je saurai ce que le Seigneur me dira de nouveau.
and now, please abide in this [place], you also, tonight, then I know what YHWH is adding to speak with me.”
20 La nuit, Dieu vint à Balaam, et il lui dit: Puisque ces hommes sont venus te chercher, lève-toi et suis-les, mais tu feras selon la parole que je te dirai.
And God comes to Balaam by night and says to him, “If the men have come to call for you, rise, go with them, and only the thing which I speak to you—do it.”
21 Balaam, s'étant levé de grand matin, bâta son ânesse et partit avec les princes de Moab.
And Balaam rises in the morning, and saddles his donkey, and goes with the princes of Moab,
22 Et Dieu se courrouça en son cœur de ce qu'il était parti, et l'ange de Dieu se leva pour l'arrêter; lui cependant, s'en allait avec son ânesse, et ses deux serviteurs étaient avec lui.
and the anger of God burns because he is going, and the Messenger of YHWH stations Himself in the way for an adversary to him, and he is riding on his donkey, and two of his servants [are] with him,
23 L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu qui lui barrait la route l'épée nue à la main, se détourna et prit à travers champs; Balaam la frappa de sa baguette, pour la ramener sur la voie.
and the donkey sees the Messenger of YHWH standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turns aside out of the way and goes into a field, and Balaam strikes the donkey to turn it aside into the way.
24 Et l'ange de Dieu se tint dans les sentiers des vignes, ayant un mur à droite et un mur à gauche.
And the Messenger of YHWH stands in a narrow path of the vineyards, [with] a wall on this [side] and a wall on that [side],
25 L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu, se froissa contre le mur et froissa le pied de Balaam; celui-ci continua de la frapper.
and the donkey sees the Messenger of YHWH, and is pressed to the wall, and presses Balaam’s foot to the wall, and he adds to strike her;
26 Mais l'ange de Dieu continua de les troubler; il s'en alla se placer dans un défilé où il n'y avait à se détourner ni à droite, ni à gauche.
and the Messenger of YHWH adds to pass over, and stands in a narrow place where there is no way to turn aside [to] the right or left,
27 L'ânesse, ayant vu l'ange de Dieu, s'abattit sous Balaam. Celui-ci se mit en colère, et il frappa l'ânesse avec sa baguette.
and the donkey sees the Messenger of YHWH, and crouches under Balaam, and the anger of Balaam burns, and he strikes the donkey with a staff.
28 Alors, Dieu ouvrit la bouche de l'ânesse, et elle dit à Balaam: Que t'ai-je fait pour que tu me frappes ainsi jusqu'à trois fois?
And YHWH opens the mouth of the donkey, and she says to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have struck me these three times?”
29 Balaam répondit à l'ânesse: Tu t'es jouée de moi, et si j'avais une épée à la main, je t'en aurais déjà percée.
And Balaam says to the donkey, “Because you have rolled yourself against me; oh that there were a sword in my hand, for now I had slain you”;
30 Et l'ânesse dit à Balaam: Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, sur laquelle tu es monté depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour? T'ai-je jamais méprisé, et maltraité ainsi? Et il dit: Non.
and the donkey says to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden since [I became] yours, even to this day? Have I at all been accustomed to do thus to you?” And he says, “No.”
31 Or, Dieu ouvrit les yeux de Balaam, et Balaam vit l'ange du Seigneur lui barrant la route, l'épée nue à la main, et, s'étant courbé, il se prosterna la face contre terre.
And YHWH uncovers the eyes of Balaam, and he sees the Messenger of YHWH standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and he bows and pays respect, to his face;
32 L'ange de Dieu lui dit: Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse jusqu'à trois fois? Me voici, je suis venu pour t'arrêter, parce que ton voyage ne m'est pas agréable; l'ânesse m'a vu, et elle s'est détournée trois fois.
and the Messenger of YHWH says to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out for an adversary, for [your] way has been perverse before Me,
33 Et si elle ne s'était détournée, je t'eusse fait périr; quant à elle, je l'aurais épargnée.
and the donkey sees Me and turns aside at My presence these three times; unless she had turned aside from My presence, surely I had also slain you now, and kept her alive.”
34 Balaam dit à l'ange du Seigneur: J'ai péché, mais je ne savais pas que vous me barriez la route, et s'il ne vous plaît point que je poursuive, je m'en retournerai.
And Balaam says to the Messenger of YHWH, “I have sinned, for I did not know that You [are] standing to meet me in the way; and now, if [it is] evil in Your eyes, I turn back by myself.”
35 Mais l'ange de Dieu dit à Balaam: Va avec ces hommes; seulement sois attentif à répéter la parole que je te dirai. Balaam alla donc avec les princes de Balac.
And the Messenger of YHWH says to Balaam, “Go with the men; and only the word which I speak to you—it you speak”; and Balaam goes with the princes of Balak.
36 Celui-ci ayant appris que Balaam arrivait, sortit à sa rencontre jusqu'à la ville de Moab, qui est sur l'Arnon, à l'extrémité de la contrée.
And Balak hears that Balaam has come, and goes out to meet him, to a city of Moab, which [is] on the border of Arnon, which [is] in the extremity of the border;
37 Et Balac dit à Balaam: Ne t'ai-je point envoyé querir? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venu vers moi? Réellement, ne suis-je point assez puissant pour t'honorer?
and Balak says to Balaam, “Did I not diligently send to you to call for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not truly able to honor you?”
38 Balaam dit à Balac: Me voici, je suis venu à toi; maintenant, sera-t-il en mon pouvoir de te dire quoi que ce soit? La parole que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche, je te la dirai.
And Balaam says to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you; now, am I able to speak anything at all? The word which God sets in my mouth—it I speak.”
39 Balaam partit ensuite avec Balac, et ils arrivèrent aux villes où étaient ses domaines.
And Balaam goes with Balak, and they come to Kirjath-Huzoth,
40 Balac sacrifia des brebis et des bœufs; puis, il en envoya à Balaam et aux princes qui l'accompagnaient.
and Balak sacrifices oxen and sheep, and sends [some] to Balaam and to the princes who [are] with him;
41 Le lendemain, Balac ayant pris Balaam, le fit monter vers la colonne de Baal, et de là il lui montra une part du peuple de Dieu.
and it comes to pass in the morning, that Balak takes Balaam and causes him to go up [to] the high places of Ba‘al, and he sees the extremity of the people from there.
