1 Cependant, le Chananéen roi d'Arad, voisin du désert, apprit qu'Israël s'avançait par le chemin d'Atharin. Aussitôt, il prit les armes contre Israël, et il lui enleva quelques prisonniers.
And whanne Chananei, the kyng of Arad, that dwellide at the south, hadde herd this, that is, that Israel cam bi the weye of aspieris, he fauyt ayens hem; and Chananei was ouercomere and ledde pray of Israel.
2 Israël fit alors un vœu au Seigneur, disant: Si vous me livrez ce peuple qui est sous ma main, je l'anathématiserai lui et ses villes.
And Israel bounde hym sylf bi avow to the Lord, and seide, If thou schalt bitake this puple in myn hond, Y schal do awei `the citees therof.
3 Le Seigneur ouït la voix d'Israël, et il lui livra le Chananéen; Israël, de son côté, l'anathématisa lui et ses villes, et il donna à ce lieu le nom d'Anathème.
And the Lord herde the preieris of Israel, and bitook the Chananey; and Israel killid hym, and distruyede hise citees; and clepide the name of that place Horma, that is, cursyng, `ethir hangyng up.
4 Ils levèrent ensuite leur camp de la montagne de Hor pour quitter le chemin de la mer Rouge et tourner autour d'Edom; mais dans ce voyage le peuple défaillit,
`Forsothe thei yeden forth also fro the hil of Hor, bi the weie that ledith to the reed see, that thei schulden cumpasse the lond of Edom; and it bigan to anoye the puple, of the weie and trauel.
5 Il injuria Dieu et Moïse, disant: Qu'allons-nous devenir? Tu nous a tirés de l'Egypte pour nous faire mourir dans le désert où il n'y a ni pain ni eau; notre âme se révolte contre cette maigre manne dont nous sommes nourris.
And the puple spak ayens the Lord and Moises, and seide, Whi leddist thou vs out of Egipt, that we schulden die in wildirnesse? breed failith, watris ben not; oure soule wlatith now on this `meete moost liyt.
6 Alors, le Seigneur envoya contre le peuple des serpents dont le venin était mortel, et ils mordirent le peuple, et une multitude des fils d'Israël périt.
Wherfor the Lord sente `firid serpentis in to the puple; at the woundis of whiche serpentis, and the dethis of ful many men,
7 Et le peuple alla trouver Moïse, disant: Nous avons péché; nous avons injurié le Seigneur et toi; prie donc le Seigneur qu'il éloigne de nous les serpents.
thei camen to Moyses, and seiden, We synneden, for we spaken ayens the Lord and thee; preie thou, that he take awey fro vs the serpentis.
8 Moïse pria le Seigneur pour le peuple, et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Fais un serpent, et pose-le au haut d'une enseigne; quand un serpent mordra un homme, quiconque sera mordu et regardera ce signe, vivra.
And Moises preiede for the puple; and the Lord seide to hym, Make thou a serpent of bras, and sette thou it for a signe; he that is smytun and biholdith it, schal lyue.
9 Moïse fit donc un serpent d'airain qu'il plaça au haut d'une enseigne, et quand un serpent mordait un homme, celui-ci regardait le serpent d'airain, et il vivait.
Therfor Moyses made a serpent of bras, and settide for a signe; and men smytun and biholdynge it, weren heelid.
10 Les fils d'Israël se mirent en marche, et ils s'arrêtèrent en Oboth.
And the sones of Israel yeden forth,
11 Etant partis d'Oboth, ils campèrent en Achalgé, hors de la région du désert qui regarde Moab du côté du levant.
and settiden tentis in Oboth; fro whennus thei yeden forth, and settiden tentis in Neabarym, in the wildirnesse, that biholdith Moab, ayens the eest coost.
12 Partis de nouveau, ils campèrent dans le val de Zared.
And thei moueden fro thennus, and camen to the stronde of Zareth;
13 De ce lieu, ils campèrent sur l'Arnon, dans la région du désert qui fait saillie sur les limites des Amorrhéens; cet Arnon est frontière de Moab, entre Moab et l'Amorrhéen.
which thei leften, and settiden tentis ayens Arnon, which is in the deseert, and apperith in the coostis of Amorrei. Forsothe Arnon is the terme of Moab, and departith Moabitis and Ammoreis.
14 C'est pourquoi il est écrit en un livre: La guerre du Seigneur a embrasé Zoob et les torrents d'Arnon,
Wherfor it is seid in the book of batels of the Lord, As he dide in the reed see, so he schal do in the strondis of Arnon;
15 Et il a placé auprès des torrents la demeure de Ar, qui est contiguë aux frontières de Moab.
the harde rochis of the strondis weren bowid, that tho schulen reste in Arnon, and schulden ligge in the coostis of Moabitis.
16 Or, il y a en ce lieu un puits: c'est le puits au sujet duquel le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Rassemble le peuple, et je leur donnerai de l'eau, et ils boiront.
Fro that place the pit apperide, of which the Lord spak to Moyses, Gadere thou the puple, and Y schal yyue watir to it.
17 Alors, Israël chanta ce cantique autour du puits: Célébrez le puits.

18 Les chefs l'ont creusé; les rois des nations, durant leur règne, tandis qu'ils étaient les maîtres, l'ont revêtu de pierres de taille. Après cela, le peuple d'Israël alla du puits à Manthanaïn;
thei sungen togidere, The pit which the princes diggiden, and the duykis of the multitude maden redi, in the yyuere of the lawe, and in her stauys. And thei yeden forth fro the wildirnesse to Mathana,
19 Ensuite, de Manthanaïn à Nahaliel, de Nahaliel à Bamoth;
fro Mathana to Naaliel, fro Naaliel in to Bamoth;
20 De Bamoth à Janin, en la plaine de Moab, que l'on voit de la cime du roc escarpé regardant le désert.
Bamoth is a valey in the cuntrey of Moab, in the cop of Phasga, that biholdith ayens the deseert.
21 Alors, Moïse envoya les anciens à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, avec des paroles pacifiques, disant:
Forsothe Israel sente messangeris to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, and seide,
22 Nous passerons par ton territoire et nous suivrons la route; nous ne nous écarterons ni dans les champs, ni dans les vignes; nous ne boirons point d'eau de ton puits; nous suivrons le grand chemin jusqu'à ce que nous ayons dépassé tes limites.
Y biseche that it be leueful to me to passe thorou thi loond; we schulen not bowe in to the feeldis and vyneris; we schulen not drynke watris of pittis; we schulen go in the kyngis weie, til we passen thi termes.
23 Mais Séhon ne permit point à Israël de franchir ses frontières; il rassembla tout son peuple, et il sortit pour se ranger en bataille devant Israël, dans le désert; il vint à Jasa, et il se rangea en bataille devant Israël.
Which nolde graunte that Israel schulde passe thury hise coostis, but rather, whanne the oost was gaderid, he yede out ayens Israel, in to deseert. And he cam in to Yasa, and fauyt ayens Israel;
24 Israël le vainquit avec grand carnage, et se rendit maître de son territoire depuis Arnon jusqu'à Jéboc, sur les frontières des fils d'Ammon, car Jazer est ville frontière des Ammonites.
of whom he was smytun in the scharpnesse of swerd, and his lond was weldid fro Arnon `til to Jeboth and `the sones of Amon; for the termes of Amonytis weren holdun bi strong help.
25 Israël prit toutes ses villes, et Israël habita toutes les villes des Amorrhéens, Esebon et ses dépendances.
Therfor Israel took alle `the citees of hym, and dwelliden in the citees of Amorrei, that is, in Esebon, and hise townes.
26 Car Esebon était la ville de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens; il avait d'abord fait la guerre au roi de Moab, et il avait pris tout son territoire depuis Aroer jusqu'à l'Arnon.
The citee of Esebon was Seons, kyng of Ammorei, which Seon fauyt ayens the kyng of Moab, and took al the lond that was of his lordschip, `til to Arnon.
27 C'est pourquoi on dit en proverbe: Venez en Esebon, où a été bâtie et peuplée la ville de Séhon.
Therfor it is seid in prouerbe, Come ye in to Esebon, be it bildid, and maad the citee of Seon;
28 Car le feu est sorti d'Esebon, c'était la flamme de la guerre de Séhon, et elle a dévoré jusqu'à Moab, elle a dévoré les colonnes d'Arnon.
fier yede out of Esebon, flawme yede out of the citee `ethir greet castel of Seon, and deuouryde Ar of Moabitis, and the dwelleris of the `hiye places of Arnon.
29 Malheur à toi, Moab; tu as péri, peuple de Chamos; leurs fils se sont vendus pour vivre, et leurs filles sont captives du roi des Amorrhéens Séhon.
Moab, wo to thee! thou, puple of Chamos, perischidist; it yaf the sones therof in to fliyt, and the douytris in to caitifte to Seon, kyng of Ammoreis;
30 Leur race est à jamais détruite d'Esebon à Dibon; et les femmes ont encore allumé le feu dans Moab.
the yok of hem perischide, fro Esebon `til to Dibon; the wery men camen in to Jophe, and `til to Medaba.
31 Or, Israël occupa toutes les villes des Amorrhéens.
And so Israel dwellide in the lond of Ammorrey.
32 Moïse envoya reconnaître Jazer; ils la prirent avec ses bourgs, et ils chassèrent les Amorrhéens qui l'habitaient.
And Moises sente men that schulden aspie Jaser, whos `townes thei token, and weldiden the dwelleris.
33 A leur retour, ils prirent la route qui conduit à Basan, et Og, roi de Basan, sortit à leur rencontre avec tout son peuple, pour combattre en Edraï.
And thei turniden hem silf, and stieden bi the weie of Basan. And Og, the kyng of Basan, with al his puple cam ayens hem, to fiyte in Edray.
34 Mais le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Ne le crains pas, je l'ai livré à tes mains, lui, tout son peuple et tout son territoire; tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Sehon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui demeurait en Esebon.
And the Lord seide to Moises, Drede thou not hym, for Y haue bitake hym, and al his loond, and puple, in thin hoond; and thou schalt do to hym as thou didist to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, the dwellere of Esebon.
35 Alors, Moïse vainquit Og et ses fils, et tout son peuple; nul n'en resta vivant, et il s'empara de son territoire.
Therfor thei smytiden `bothe hym with hise sones and al his puple, `til to deeth; and thei weldiden `the lond of hym.
