1 Toute la synagogue des fils d'Israël revint dans le désert de Sin durant le premier mois, et elle demeura en Cadès; or, Marie mourut en ce lieu, et elle y fut ensevelie.
And the sons of Israel, all the congregation, come [into] the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people abide in Kadesh; and Miriam dies there and is buried there.
2 Et il n'y avait point la d'eau pour la synagogue; elle se rassembla donc tumultueusement autour de Moïse et d'Aaron.
And there has been no water for the congregation, and they are assembled against Moses and against Aaron,
3 Et le peuple injuria Moïse, disant: Que ne sommes-nous morts lorsque nos frères ont été détruits devant le Seigneur?
and the people strive with Moses and speak, saying, “And oh that we had expired when our brothers expired before YHWH!
4 Pourquoi avez-vous conduit le peuple en ce désert, où nous périssons, nous et nos bestiaux?
And why have you brought in the assembly of YHWH to this wilderness to die there, we and our beasts?
5 Dans quel but nous avez-vous amenés de l'Egypte en ce lieu maudit, où il n'y a ni semailles, ni figues, ni vignes, ni grenades, ni même d'eau à boire?
And why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? [It is] not a place of seed, and fig, and vine, and pomegranate; and there is no water to drink.”
6 Aussitôt, Moïse et Aaron, s'éloignant de la synagogue, allèrent devant la porte du tabernacle du témoignage, et ils se prosternèrent la face contre terre; alors, la gloire du Seigneur leur apparut.
And Moses and Aaron go in from the presence of the assembly to the opening of the Tent of Meeting and fall on their faces, and the glory of YHWH is seen by them.
7 Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant:
And YHWH speaks to Moses, saying,
8 Prends ta baguette; toi et ton frère, convoquez la synagogue, et parlez au rocher qui est devant vous, il vous donnera ses eaux; vous ferez jaillir pour vous de l'eau du rocher, et vous abreuverez la synagogue et les bestiaux.
“Take the rod and assemble the congregation—you and your brother Aaron—and you have spoken to the rock before their eyes, and it has given its water, and you have brought out water to them from the rock, and have watered the congregation and their beasts.”
9 Moïse prit la baguette déposée devant le Seigneur, comme le Seigneur le lui avait prescrit.
And Moses takes the rod from before YHWH as He has commanded him,
10 Et Moïse et Aaron convoquèrent la synagogue devant le rocher, et Moïse lui dit: Ecoutez-moi, incrédules; tirerons-nous pour vous de l'eau de ce rocher?
and Moses and Aaron assemble the assembly to the front of the rock, and he says to them, “Now hear, O rebels, do we bring out water to you from this rock?”
11 Puis, Moïse étendit la main, et de sa baguette il frappa deux fois le rocher. Aussitôt, l'eau jaillit en abondance; la synagogue but et elle abreuva ses bestiaux.
And Moses lifts up his hand and strikes the rock with his rod twice; and much water comes out, and the congregation drinks, and their beasts [drink].
12 Le Seigneur dit alors à Moïse et à Aaron: Vous n'avez pas eu assez de foi pour me sanctifier devant les fils d'Israël, c'est pourquoi vous n'introduirez point ce peuple dans la terre que je vous ai donnée.
And YHWH says to Moses and to Aaron, “Because you have not believed in Me to sanctify Me before the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore you do not bring in this assembly to the land which I have given to them.”
13 Cette eau est appelée l'eau de contradiction, parce qu'en ce lieu les fils d'Israël injurièrent Moïse devant le Seigneur, et que le Seigneur fut sanctifié en eux.
These [are] the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel have “striven” with YHWH, and He is sanctified among them.
14 De Cadès, Moïse envoya des messagers au roi d'Edom, disant: Ton frère Israël dit ces choses: Tu sais toutes les peines qui nous ont assaillis.
And Moses sends messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, “Thus said your brother Israel: You have known all the travail which has found us,
15 Nos pères sont descendus en Egypte; nous avons habité l'Egypte bien des années, et les Egyptiens nous ont opprimés, comme nos pères.
that our fathers go down to Egypt, and we dwell in Egypt [for] many days, and the Egyptians do evil to us and to our fathers;
16 Nous avons invoqué le Seigneur, et il a entendu nos cris; il a envoyé son ange, il nous a fait sortir de la terre d'Egypte, et nous voilà arrivés en la ville de Cadès du côté de tes frontières.
then we cry to YHWH, and He hears our voice, and sends a Messenger, and is bringing us out of Egypt; and behold, we [are] in Kadesh, a city [in] the extremity of your border.
17 Nous allons donc passer par ton territoire; nous ne traverserons ni les champs, ni les vignes; nous ne boirons point l'eau de tes citernes; nous suivrons le grand chemin, sans nous détourner à droite ni à gauche, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons dépassé tes limites.
Please let us pass over through your land; we do not pass over through a field or through a vineyard, nor do we drink waters of a well; we go the way of the king, we do not turn aside [to] the right or left until we pass over your border.”
18 Mais Edom lui dit: Tu ne passeras point par mon territoire; si tu insistes, j'irai a ta rencontre pour te combattre.
And Edom says to him, “You do not pass over through me, lest I come out to meet you with the sword.”
19 Les fils d'Israël répartirent: Nous passerons le long de la montagne, et si de l'eau qui t'appartienne est bue par nous ou nos troupeaux, nous te la paierons; mais il ne peut être question de cela, nous passerons le long de la montagne.
And the sons of Israel say to him, “We go in the highway, and if we drink of your waters—I and my livestock—then I have given their price; only, let me pass over on my feet, nothing [more].”
20 Mais Edom dit: Tu ne passeras point par mon territoire; et il sortit à la rencontre d'Israël avec une multitude redoutable et des bras puissants.
And he says, “You do not pass over”; and Edom comes out to meet him with many people and with a strong hand;
21 Ainsi Edom ne voulut pas permettre à Israël de franchir sa frontière, et Israël se détourna de lui.
and Edom refuses to permit Israel to pass over through his border, and Israel turns aside from off him.
22 Les fils d'Israël partirent de Cadès, et ils arrivèrent dans la montagne de Hor.
And the sons of Israel, all the congregation, journey from Kadesh and come to Mount Hor,
23 Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse et à Aaron en la montagne de Hor, sur les frontières de la terre d'Edom, disant:
and YHWH speaks to Moses and to Aaron in Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, saying,
24 Qu'Aaron aille rejoindre son peuple: car vous ne devez point entrer en la terre que j'ai donnée aux fils d'Israël, parce que vous m'avez irrité au sujet de l'eau de contradiction.
“Aaron is gathered to his people, for he does not go into the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because that you provoked My mouth at the waters of Meribah.
25 Prends Aaron et son fils Eléazar, et fais-les monter sur la montagne de Hor, devant toute la synagogue.
Take Aaron and his son Eleazar, and cause them to go up Mount Hor,
26 Ote à Aaron sa robe pour en revêtir Eléazar son fils; qu'Aaron se réunisse à son peuple et meure en ce lieu.
and strip Aaron of his garments, and you have clothed his son Eleazar [with] them, and Aaron is gathered, and dies there.”
27 Moïse fit ce qu'avait prescrit le Seigneur; il fit monter Aaron sur la montagne de Hor devant toute la synagogue.
And Moses does as YHWH has commanded, and they go up to Mount Hor before the eyes of all the congregation,
28 Il ôta à Aaron les vêtements sacerdotaux, il en revêtit son fils Eléazar, et Aaron mourut sur le sommet de la montagne, puis Moïse descendit de la montagne avec Eléazar.
and Moses strips Aaron of his garments, and clothes his son Eleazar with them, and Aaron dies there on the top of the mountain; and Moses comes down—Eleazar also—from the mountain,
29 Toute la synagogue vit qu'Aaron était mort; et toute la maison d'Israël pleura Aaron trente jours.
and all the congregation sees that Aaron has expired, and all the house of Israel laments Aaron [for] thirty days.
