1 Le Seigneur dit ensuite à Moïse:
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,
2 Parle aux fils d'Israël, prends de chacun des chefs de tribu une baguette, et, sur chacune des douze baguettes, écris le nom de chacun d'eux.
“Tell the Israeli people to bring to you twelve walking sticks. They should bring one from each of the leaders of the twelve tribes. You should carve each leader’s name on his stick.
3 Ecris aussi le nom d'Aaron sur la baguette de Lévi, c'est une baguette à part; et les chefs feront l'offrande de ces baguettes par tribus.
There must be one stick for the leader of each tribe, so you must carve Aaron’s name on the stick for the tribe of Levi.
4 Place-les ensuite dans le tabernacle devant le témoignage; c'est par elles que je me manifesterai à toi.
Put those sticks inside the Sacred Tent, in front of the sacred chest that has in it the tablets on which the Ten Commandments are written. That is the place where I always talk with you.
5 Et la baguette de celui que j'aurai choisi reverdira, et je rejetterai loin de moi le murmure que les fils d'Israël ont fait éclater contre vous.
Buds will sprout on the stick of the man whom I have chosen [to be the priest]. [When the people see that], they will stop their constantly complaining about you [because they will realize that you are the one whom I have chosen].”
6 Moïse parla donc aux fils d'Israël; tous les chefs donnèrent chacun une baguette, et il y eut douze baguettes pour les douze tribus, et en outre celle d'Aaron parmi les autres.
So Moses/I told the people what Yahweh had said. Then each of the twelve Israeli leaders, including Aaron, brought his walking stick to Moses/me.
7 Moïse plaça les baguettes devant le Seigneur dans le tabernacle du témoignage.
Moses/I placed the sticks inside the Sacred Tent in front of the sacred chest.
8 Et le lendemain il entra avec Aaron dans le tabernacle du témoignage; la baguette d'Aaron, de la maison de Lévi, avait germé; elle portait un bourgeon, une fleur s'y épanouissait, et elle promettait des fruits.
The following morning, when he/I went into the tent, he/I saw that Aaron’s stick, which represented the tribe of Levi, had sprouted, it had produced leaves and blossoms, and it had also produced almonds that were ripe!
9 Après cela, Moïse ôta toutes les baguettes de devant le Seigneur, et il les porta aux fils d'Israël; ils les virent, et chaque chef reprit la sienne.
Moses/I brought all the sticks out of the Sacred Tent and showed them to the people. Each of the twelve leaders took back his own stick.
10 Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Dépose la baguette d'Aaron devant le témoignage, afin qu'elle soit conservée comme signe pour les fils des indociles; que le murmure de ceux-ci s'apaise, et ils ne mourront point.
Then Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Put Aaron’s stick in front of the sacred chest, and let it stay there permanently. That will be a warning to people who want to rebel [against me]. Then no more people will die [because of complaining against me].”
11 Moïse et Aaron firent ce qu'avait prescrit le Seigneur; ainsi firent- ils.
So Moses/I did what Yahweh had commanded.
12 Et les fils d'Israël parlèrent à Moïse, disant: Voilà que nous périssons, que nous sommes consumés.
Then the Israeli people said to Moses/me, “We are going to die! All of us are surely going to die!
13 Tous ceux qui touchent au tabernacle du témoignage meurent; mourrons- nous tous jusqu'au dernier?
Everyone who comes close to Yahweh’s Sacred Tent dies. Are the rest of us going to die, also?” [RHQ]
