Nahum 1

1 Prédiction à Ninive, livre de la vision de Nahum, Elcéséen.

The oracle, on Nineveh, —the scroll of the vision of Nahum, the Elkoshite.

2 Dieu est jaloux, le Seigneur Se venge, le Seigneur Se venge avec colère, le Seigneur tire vengeance de ceux qui Lui sont opposés; Il extermine Ses ennemis.

A GOD jealous and avenging, is Yahweh, an avenger, is Yahweh, and a lord of wrath, an avenger, is Yahweh towards his adversaries, and, a retainer [of anger], is he to his foes.

3 Le Seigneur est longanime, Sa force est grande; mais le Seigneur ne laissera pas impuni celui qu'Il n'a pas encore puni; Sa voie est dans la destruction et les ébranlements; et les nuages sont la poussière de Ses pieds.

Yahweh, is slow to anger, but great in vigour, He will not leave, unpunished, as for Yahweh, in storm-wind and in tempest, is his way, and, clouds, are the dust of his feet.

4 C'est Lui qui menace la mer et qui la dessèche; c'est Lui qui change en désert tous les fleuves. Basan et le Carmel ont défailli, et les fleurs du Liban se sont fanées.

Who rebuketh the sea and hath made it dry, and, all the streams, hath he dried up, —withered are Bashan and Carmel, Even the bloom of Lebanon, is withered:

5 Par Lui, les montagnes ont tressailli et les collines ont tremblé; devant Sa face toute la terre a reculé, et ceux qui l'habitent

Mountains, have trembled because of him, and, the hills, have melted, —and the earth, hath lifted itself up, at his presence, the world also, and all who dwell therein.

6 Qui soutiendra le regard de Sa fureur? Qui résistera aux transports de Son courroux? Sa colère ronge les fondations; les rochers se fendent devant Lui.

Before his indignation, who shall stand? And who shall abide the glow of his anger? His wrath, hath been poured forth like fire, and, the rocks, have been broken down because of him.

7 Le Seigneur est doux pour ceux qui L'attendent au jour de la tribulation; Il connaît ceux qui Le révèrent.

Good is Yahweh, as a protection in the day of distress, —and one who acknowledgeth them who seek refuge in him.

8 Il détruira votre voie par une inondation; les ténèbres poursuivent ceux qui se lèvent contre Lui et Le haïssent.

But, with an overflow rolling on, a full end, will he make of them who rise up against him, —and, his foes, will he pursue into darkness.

9 Pourquoi vos pensées sont-elles contre le Seigneur? Lui seul mène toutes choses à leur fin; Il ne S'y prendra pas à deux fois pour vous briser.

What can ye devise against Yahweh? A full end, is he making, —Distress, shall not rise up twice:

10 Et celui-là sera dévasté jusqu'aux fondations, il sera dévoré par la flamme comme l'if aux rameaux entrelacés, comme le chaume tout à fait desséché.

Though they were like thorns intertwined, and as drunkards drenched with their drink, yet have they been devoured, like stubble fully dry.

11 De toi, ô Ninive, sortira contre le Seigneur une pensée méchante et ennemie.

Out of thee, hath one come forth—plotting, against Yahweh, wickedness, —A counselor of the Abandoned One.

12 Or voici ce que dit le Seigneur, souverain Maître des grandes eaux. Ils seront séparés pareillement, et l'on n'entendra plus parler de toi.

Thus, saith Yahweh, Though they be in full force, and so in great numbers, yet, even so, have they been cut off, and have passed away, —If I humble thee [once], I will not humble thee again.

13 Et maintenant, Mon peuple, Je vais briser loin de toi sa verge, et rompre tes liens.

Now, therefore, will I break his yoke from off thee, —and, thy fetters, will I tear off.

14 Voici ce que sur toi, Ninive, a prescrit le Seigneur: Ta renommée ne sera plus semée au loin; Je détruirai dans le temple de ton dieu les images sculptées ou jetées en fonte; Je vais comme en courant préparer ton sépulcre.

Then will Yahweh give command concerning thee, None of thy name shall be sown any more, —out of the house of thy gods, will I cut off carved image and molten image, I will appoint thy grave, for thou art of little esteem.

15 Voici sur les montagnes les pieds de Celui qui apporte la bonne nouvelle et qui annonce la paix. Juda, célèbre tes fêtes, accomplis tes vœux, car tes ennemis ne passeront plus sur ta terre, encouragés par ta décrépitude. Tout est fini pour eux, ils ont été retranchés.

Lo! upon the mountains, The feet of one, who bringeth Good Tidings! who publisheth Prosperity! Celebrate, O Judah, thy pilgrim festivals, fulfil thy vows, for, not again, any more, shall the Abandoned One, pass through thee, he hath been wholly cut off.
