Lamentations 4
1 Aleph. Comment l'or s'est-il terni? Comment l'argent pur s'est-il changé? Comment les pierres saintes ont-elles été dispersées aux coins de toutes les rues?
Aleph. How is the gold become dim, the finest colour is changed, the stones of the sanctuary are scattered in the top of every street?
2 Beth. Les fils de Sion les plus honorés, ceux que l'on prisait autant que l'or, comment ont-ils été traités comme des vases de terre, œuvre des mains du potier?
Beth. The noble sons of Sion, and they that were clothed with the best gold: how are they esteemed as earthen vessels, the work of the potter’s hands?
3 Ghimel. Les dragons eux-mêmes ont découvert leurs mamelles; et leurs petits ont allaité les filles de mon peuple, pour leur communiquer leur incurable instinct, comme l'autruche dans le désert.
Ghimel. Even the sea monsters have drawn out the breast, they have given suck to their young: the daughter of my people is cruel, like the ostrich in the desert.
4 Daleth. La langue de l'enfant à la mamelle, s'est collée à son palais dans sa soif; les enfants ont demandé du pain, et nul n'était là pour leur en distribuer.
Daleth. The tongue of the sucking child hath stuck to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the little ones have asked for bread, and there was none to break it unto them.
5 Hé. Ceux qui se nourrissaient de mets délicats ont péri dans les rues; ceux qu'on avait élevés dans la pourpre ont été enfouis dans le fumier.
He. They that were fed delicately have died in the streets; they that were brought up in scarlet have embraced the dung.
6 Vav. L'iniquité de la fille de mon peuple a dépassé l'iniquité de Sodome, jadis renversée en un moment, sans que des hommes y aient fatigué leurs mains.
Vau. And the iniquity of the daughter of my people is made greater than the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and hands took nothing in her.
7 Zaïn. Les Nazaréens étaient plus blancs que la neige, plus éclatants que le lait; ils étaient comme purifiés par le feu; leur poli était supérieur à celui du saphir.
Zain. Her Nazarites were whiter than snow, purer than milk, more ruddy than the old ivory, fairer than the sapphire.
8 Cheth. Et leur visage est devenu plus noir que la suie, on ne les reconnaît pas dans les rues; leur peau s'est collée sur leurs os; ils se sont desséchés comme du bois mort.
Heth. Their face is now made blacker than coals, and they are not known in the streets: their skin hath stuck to their bones, it is withered, and is become like wood.
9 Teth. Les hommes tués par le glaive étaient plus beaux que les hommes morts de faim; car ceux-ci s'en étaient allés transpercés par la disette des fruits de la terre.
Teth. It was better with them that were slain by the sword, than with them that died with hunger: for these pined away being consumed for want of the fruits of the earth.
10 Iod. Les mains des femmes, naturellement compatissantes, ont fait cuire leurs propres enfants; elles s'en sont nourries dans la ruine de la fille de mon peuple.
Jod. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
11 Caph. Le Seigneur a assouvi sa colère; il a répandu son indignation et ses fureurs, et il a allumé dans Sion un feu qui l'a dévorée jusqu'en ses fondements.
Caph. The Lord hath accomplished his wrath, he hath poured out his fierce anger: and he hath kindled a fire in Sion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof.
12 Lamed. Les rois de la terre, les peuples du monde entier ne croyaient pas qu'un ennemi, qu'un oppresseur pût entrer par les portes de Jérusalem.
Lamed. The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world would not have believed, that the adversary and the enemy should enter in by the gates of Jerusalem.
13 Mem. À cause des péchés de ses prophètes, et des iniquités de ses prêtres, qui au milieu d'elle versaient le sang innocent,
Mem. For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.
14 Noun. Les gardes ont chancelé dans les rues, ne pouvant éviter d'y marcher; ils se sont souillés de sang, et leurs robes y ont touché.
Nun. They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they were defiled with blood: and when they could not help walking in it, they held up their skirts.
15 Samech. Éloignez-vous des impurs; criez-leur: Retirez-vous, retirez- vous, ne nous touchez pas; car ceux que les impurs ont touché ont chancelé; dites aux nations: Ils n'habiteront plus parmi nous.
Samech. Depart you that are defiled, they cried out to them: Depart, get ye hence, touch not: for they quarrelled, and being removed, they said among the Gentiles: He will no more dwell among them.
16 Aïn. La présence du Seigneur était leur partage; il ne les considèrera plus; ils n'ont pas respecté le visage des prêtres; ils ont été sans miséricorde pour les prophètes.
Phe. The face of the Lord hath divided them, he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, neither had they pity on the ancient.
17 Phé. Quand nous vivions encore, nos yeux se sont lassés à vainement regarder, et à attendre du secours.
Ain. While we were yet standing, our eyes failed, expecting help for us in vain, when we looked attentively towards a nation that was not able to save.
18 Tsadé. Nous nous sommes tournés vers une nation qui ne pouvait nous sauver; nous avons fait la chasse à nos petits enfants, de peur qu'ils ne sortissent dans les places publiques.
Sade. Our steps have slipped in the way of our streets, our end draweth near: our days are fulfilled, for our end is come.
19 Coph. Notre temps est proche; nos jours sont remplis; le moment est arrivé; nos persécuteurs sont venus, plus agiles que l'aigle dans le ciel; ils se sont élancés des montagnes; ils nous ont tendu des pièges dans le désert.
Coph. Our persecutors were swifter than the eagles of the air: they pursued us upon the mountains, they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.
20 Resch. L'esprit de notre face, le Christ Seigneur a été pris dans leurs filets, lui dont nous avons dit: Nous vivrons à son ombre parmi les nations!
Res. The breath of our mouth, Christ the Lord, is taken in our sins: to whom we said: Under thy shadow we shall live among the Gentiles.
21 Schin. Réjouis-toi, sois dans l'allégresse, fille de l'Idumée qui habite la terre; le calice du Seigneur passera aussi sur toi, tu t'enivreras, et tu vomiras ton ivresse.
Sin. Rejoice, and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Hus: to thee also shall the cup come, thou shalt be made drunk, and naked.
22 Thav. Ton iniquité a cessé, fille de Sion; ta captivité touche à son terme; mais le Seigneur a visité ton iniquité, fille d'Édom, et il a mis tes impiétés à découvert.
Thau. Thy iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Sion, he will no more carry thee away into captivity: he visited thy iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he hath discovered thy sins. The Prayer of Jeremias the Prophet.
