Juges 9
1 Et Abimélech, fils de Jérobaal, alla trouver à Sichem les frères de sa mère, et il parla à eux et à toute la famille du père de sa mère, disant:
And Abimelech son of Jerubba‘al goes to Shechem, to his mother’s brothers, and speaks to them, and to all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
2 Dites donc à tous les hommes de Sichem: Quel est le meilleur pour vous d'être gouvernés par soixante-dix hommes, tous fils de Jérobaal, ou de n'avoir qu'un seul chef? Et n'oubliez pas que je suis de vos os et de votre chair.
“Now speak in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which [is] good for you—seventy men ruling over you (all the sons of Jerubba‘al), or one man ruling over you? And you have remembered that I [am] your bone and your flesh.”
3 Et les frères de sa mère parlèrent de lui à tous les hommes de Sichem, de sorte que leur cœur inclina pour Abimélech, parce que, dirent-ils, c'est notre frère.
And his mother’s brothers speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclines after Abimelech, for they said, “He [is] our brother”;
4 Ils lui donnèrent donc soixante-dix sicles d'argent du temple du Baal- Berith. Et Abimélech prit à son service des mercenaires méchants et dénués de tout, qui le suivirent.
and they give seventy [pieces] of silver out of the house of Ba‘al-Berith to him, and Abimelech hires vain and unstable men with them, and they go after him;
5 Aussitôt, il entra dans la maison de son père, en Ephratha, et massacra, sur une même pierre, ses frères, les fils de Jérobaal, soixante-dix hommes. Il n'y eut d'épargné que Joatham, le plus jeune fils de Jérobaal, parce qu'il s'était caché.
and he goes into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slays his brothers, sons of Jerubba‘al, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubba‘al, is left, for he was hidden.
6 Après cela, tous les hommes de Sichem, les juges, et toute la maison de Bethmaalo se réunirent, et ils marchèrent, et ils proclamèrent roi Abimélech, sous le chêne qui se trouva être le Chêne de la sédition, à Sichem.
And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which [is] in Shechem;
7 On l'apprit à Joatham, et il partit; il s'en fut sur la cime du mont Garizin; là, il éleva la voix, il pleura, et il leur dit: Ecoutez-moi, hommes de Sichem, et Dieu vous écoutera.
and they declare [it] to Jotham, and he goes and stands on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifts up his voice, and calls, and says to them, “Listen to me, O masters of Shechem, and God listens to you:
8 Les arbres se mirent en mouvement, et ils se rassemblèrent pour oindre un roi qui régnât sur eux, et ils dirent à l'olivier: Règne sur nous.
The trees have diligently gone to anoint a king over them, and they say to the olive, Reign over us.
9 Et l'olivier leur dit: Puis-je abandonner mon huile dont les hommes se servent pour honorer Dieu, et m'en aller pour être élevé à la tête des arbres?
And the olive says to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honor gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
10 Et les arbres dirent au figuier: Viens, règne sur nous.
And the trees say to the fig, Come, reign over us.
11 Et le figuier leur dit: Puis-je abandonner mon doux suc et mes excellents fruits, et m'en aller pour être élevé à la tête des autres arbres?
And the fig says to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
12 Et les arbres dirent à la vigne: Viens, règne sur nous.
And the trees say to the vine, Come, reign over us.
13 Et la vigne leur dit: Puis-je abandonner mon vin qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, et m'en aller pour être élevé à la tête des arbres?
And the vine says to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is making gods and men glad, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?
14 Et tous les arbres dirent au nerprun: Viens, toi, et règne sur nous.
And all the trees say to the bramble, Come, reign over us.
15 Et le nerprun dit aux arbres: Si, en vérité, vous me donnez l'onction pour que je règne sur vous, venez, demeurez sous mon ombre; sinon, qu'une flamme sorte de moi et qu'elle dévore les cèdres du Liban.
And the bramble says to the trees, If in truth you are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not—fire comes out from the bramble, and devours the cedars of Lebanon.
16 Et vous, maintenant, si c'est en vérité et en toute perfection que vous avez agi, et que vous avez proclamé roi Abimélech, si vous avez traité avec bienveillance Jérobaal et sa maison, et si vous avez dignement récompensé mon père
And now, if you have acted in truth and in sincerity when you make Abimelech king; and if you have done good with Jerubba‘al, and with his house; and if you have done to him according to the deed of his hands—
17 D'avoir commandé vos armées, jeté sa vie aux hasards des combats, et délivré Israël des mains de Madian;
because my father has fought for you, and casts his life away from [him], and delivers you from the hand of Midian;
18 Vous qui vous êtes soulevés aujourd'hui contre la maison de mon père, et avez tué sur une même pierre ses fils, soixante-dix hommes, et avez proclamé roi Abimélech, fils de sa servante, pour qu'il règne sur Sichem, parce qu'il est votre frère;
and you have risen against the house of my father today, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he [is] your brother—
19 Si c'est en vérité et en toute perfection que vous avez agi envers Jérobaal et toute sa famille, faites votre joie d'Abimélech, et que lui aussi mette sa joie en vous.
indeed, if in truth and in sincerity you have acted with Jerubba‘al and with his house this day, rejoice in Abimelech, and he rejoices—even he—in you;
20 Sinon, qu'une flamme sorte d'Abimélech, qu'elle dévore les hommes de Sichem et la maison de Bethmaalo, et qu'une flamme sorte des hommes de Sichem et de la maison de Bethmaalo, et qu'elle dévore Abimélech.
and if not—fire comes out from Abimelech and devours the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire comes out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devours Abimelech.”
21 Ensuite Joatham s'enfuit, il courut, et se rendit à Béor, où il demeura loin de son frère Abimélech.
And Jotham hurries, and flees, and goes to Beer, and dwells there, from the face of his brother Abimelech.
22 Abimélech régna trois ans sur Israël.
And Abimelech is prince over Israel [for] three years,
23 Et Dieu envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimélech et les hommes de Sichem; les hommes de Sichem méprisèrent la maison d'Abimélec, et rejetèrent sur lui
and God sends an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,
24 L'iniquité exercée contre les soixante-dix fils de Jérobaal; ils firent retomber le sang de ses frères, qu'il avait tués, sur lui, et sur les hommes de Sichem qui avaient prêté appui à ses mains pour qu'il tuât ses frères.
for [the] coming in of [the] violence [against] seventy sons of Jerubba‘al, and to place their blood on their brother Abimelech, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brothers.
25 Alors, les hommes de Sichem lui dressèrent des embûches sur les cimes des monts; ils pillèrent tout ce qui passait près d'eux sur la route; et on vint l'annoncer au roi Abimélech.
And the masters of Shechem set ambushes for him on the top of the hills, and rob everyone who passes over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.
26 Et Gaal, fils de Jobel, survint avec ses frères; ils passèrent à Sichem, et les hommes de Sichem espérèrent en lui.
And Gaal son of Ebed comes—also his brothers—and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,
27 Ils sortirent dans les champs, ils vendangèrent et ils pressurèrent le raisin, et ils formèrent des chœurs de danse. Ils firent des offrandes en la maison de leur dieu, ils mangèrent, ils burent, et ils maudirent Abimélech.
and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.
28 Et Gaal, fils de Jobel, dit: Qu'est donc Abimélech? quel est ce fils de Sichem pour que nous lui soyons asservis? N'est-il pas fils de Jérobaal? n'est-ce pas son serviteur Zébul qui vous surveille, vous et les fils d'Emmor, père de Sichem? Pourquoi donc leur serions-nous asservis?
And Gaal son of Ebed says, “Who [is] Abimelech, and who [is] Shechem, that we serve him? Is [he] not son of Jerubba‘al? And his commander Zebul? The men of Hamor father of Shechem serve you, and why do we serve him—we?
29 Que l'on remette le peuple entre mes mains, et j'expulserai cet Abimélech, et je lui dirai: Complète ton armée et sors.
And oh that this people were in my hand—then I turn Abimelech aside”; and he says to Abimelech, “Increase your host, and come out.”
30 Or, Zébul, chef de la ville, apprit les discours de Gaal, fils de Jobel, et il en fut courroucé.
And Zebul, prince of the city, hears the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burns,
31 Et il dépêcha secrètement des messagers à Abimélech, disant: Voilà que Gaal, fils de Jobel, et ses frères, sont venus à Sichem, et ils campent autour de la ville contre toi.
and he sends messengers to Abimelech deceitfully, saying, “Behold, Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers are coming into Shechem, and behold, they are fortifying the city against you;
32 Maintenant, pars au milieu de la nuit, avec la partie du peuple qui est pour toi, et dresse-leur une embuscade dans les champs.
and now, rise by night, you and the people who [are] with you, and lay wait in the field,
33 Demain, au lever du soleil, tiens-toi prêt, étends-toi vers la ville; il marchera contre toi avec sa suite; alors tu lui feras tout le mal que tu pourras.
and it has been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, you rise early, and have pushed against the city; and behold, he and the people who [are] with him are going out to you—and you have done to him as your hand finds.”
34 Abimélech et tous ses adhérents partirent donc au milieu de la nuit, et, formant quatre troupes, ils dressèrent une embuscade contre Sichem.
And Abimelech rises, and all the people who [are] with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem—four detachments;
35 De son côté, Gaal, fils de Jobel, se mit en mouvement et se rangea près de la porte de la ville; bientôt, Abimélech et sa troupe sortirent de leur embuscade.
and Gaal son of Ebed goes out, and stands at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech rises—also the people who [are] with him—from the ambush,
36 Quand Gaal, fils de Jobel, vit des hommes en armes, il dit à Zébul: Voilà que des hommes descendent du sommet des montagnes; et Zébul lui dit: Tu prends pour des hommes l'ombre des montagnes.
and Gaal sees the people and says to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the top of the hills”; and Zebul says to him, “You are seeing the shadow of the hills like men.”
37 Et Gaal continua de parler, et il dit: Voilà que des hommes descendent du côté de la mer et ils sortent des entrailles de la terre, et une autre troupe s'avance par la route d'Hélon-Maonenim.
And Gaal adds yet to speak and says, “Behold, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”
38 Et Zébul lui dit: Qu'est devenue ta langue; ne disais-tu pas: Qu'est donc cet Abimélech, pour que nous lui soyons asservis? N'est-ce point là l'armée que tu comptais pour rien? Marche maintenant, et livre-lui bataille.
And Zebul says to him, “Where [is] your mouth now, in that you say, Who [is] Abimelech that we serve him? Is this not the people against which you have kicked? Please go out now and fight against it.”
39 Et Gaal alla au-devant des hommes de Sichem, et il combattit Abimélech.
And Gaal goes out before the masters of Shechem, and fights against Abimelech,
40 Mais Abimélech le poursuivit, et il s'enfuit devant Abimélech, et beaucoup de morts tombèrent jusqu'à la porte de la ville.
and Abimelech pursues him, and he flees from his presence, and many fall wounded—to the opening of the gate.
41 Abimélech entra ensuite dans Arma, et Zébul chassa Gaal et ses frères, qui ne purent demeurer à Sichem.
And Abimelech abides in Arumah, and Zebul casts out Gaal and his brothers from dwelling in Shechem.
42 Le lendemain, le peuple, à son tour, sortit dans les champs, et l'on en instruisit Abimélech.
And it comes to pass, on the next day, that the people go out to the field, and they declare [it] to Abimelech,
43 Il prit ses hommes, les divisa en trois troupes, et les mit en embuscade dans les champs; lorsqu'il vit le peuple sortir de la ville, il marcha contre lui, et il fut vainqueur.
and he takes the people, and divides them into three detachments, and lays wait in a field, and looks, and behold, the people are coming out from the city, and he rises against them, and strikes them.
44 Abimélech et ses chefs poussèrent en avant, et ils s'arrêtèrent près des portes de la ville; en même temps les chefs des deux autres troupes se déployèrent contre tous ceux qui étaient dans les champs, et ils les vainquirent.
And Abimelech and the detachments who [are] with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and strike them,
45 Abimélech, tout ce jour-là, fut aux prises avec la ville; il s'en rendit maître, il massacra tout le peuple qu'elle renfermait; il la détruisit, et il y sema du sel.
and Abimelech has fought against the city all that day, and captures the city, and has slain the people who [are] in it, and he breaks down the city, and sows it [with] salt.
46 Tous les hommes de la tour de Sichem l'ouïrent, et ils se rassemblèrent en Béthelbérith;
And all the masters of the Tower of Shechem hear, and go into the high place of the house of the god Berith,
47 Et l'on vint dire à Abimélech que tous les hommes de la tour de Sichem étaient réunis.
and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the Tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,
48 Aussitôt, Abimélech monta sur la montagne de Selmon, avec toutes ses forces, prit en sa main des haches, coupa un rameau, l'enleva, le mit sur ses épaules, et dit aux siens: Ce que vous me verrez faire, faites-le aussi à l'instant.
and Abimelech goes up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who [are] with him, and Abimelech takes the great axe in his hand, and cuts off a bough of the trees, and lifts it up, and sets [it] on his shoulder, and says to the people who [are] with him, “What you have seen me do—hurry, do as I [have done].”
49 Chaque homme coupa un rameau; ils suivirent tous Abimélech, ils déposèrent les rameaux autour du lieu de rassemblement, et ils y mirent le feu, et ils brûlèrent tous les hommes du rassemblement. Ainsi tous ceux de la tour de Sichem périrent; environ mille hommes et femmes.
And every one of the people cuts down his bough and goes after Abimelech, and sets [them] at the high place, and burns the high place with fire by these, and also all the men of the Tower of Shechem die—about one thousand men and women.
50 Abimélech partit de Béthelbérith, assiégea Thèbes et la prit.
And Abimelech goes to Thebez, and encamps against Thebez, and captures it,
51 Il y avait au milieu de la ville une forte tour, ou tous les hommes et les femmes de la ville se réfugièrent; ils fermèrent les portes sur eux, et ils montèrent sur la plate-forme de la tour.
and a strong tower has been in the midst of the city, and all the men and the women flee there, and all the masters of the city, and they shut [it] behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.
52 Abimélech alla jusqu'à la tour, l'investit, et s'approcha de la porte de la tour, afin de la brûler.
And Abimelech comes to the tower, and fights against it, and draws near to the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,
53 Mais, une femme jeta un éclat de meule sur la tête d'Abimélech, et elle lui brisa le crâne.
and a certain woman casts a piece of a millstone on the head of Abimelech, and breaks his skull,
54 Il cria aussitôt pour appeler le serviteur qui portait ses armes, et il lui dit: Tire mon épée et tue-moi, de peur que l'on ne dise: Une femme l'a tué. Et son serviteur le transperça, et il mourut.
and he calls quickly to the young man carrying his weapons and says to him, “Draw your sword, and you have put me to death, lest they say of me—A woman slew him”; and his young man pierced him through, and he dies.
55 Et les hommes d'Israël virent qu'Abimélech était mort, et chacun retourna en sa demeure.
And the men of Israel see that Abimelech [is] dead, and each one goes to his place;
56 Ainsi, Dieu fit retomber sur Abimélech sa cruauté envers sa famille paternelle, et le meurtre de ses soixante-dix frères.
and God turns back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brothers;
57 Et Dieu fit retomber sur la tête des hommes de Sichem toute leur méchanceté, et il accomplit contre eux la malédiction de Joatham, fils de Jérobaal.
and God has returned all the evil of the men of Shechem on their [own] head, and the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubba‘al comes to them.
