Juges 21
1 Après cela, les fils d'Israël en Masdepha prêtèrent ce serment: Nul de nous ne donnera sa fille en mariage à un homme de Benjamin.
Also the sones of Israel sworen in Maspha, and seiden, Noon of vs schal yyue to the sones of Beniamyn a wijf of his douytris.
2 Le peuple revint ensuite à Béthel; il y demeura jusqu'au soir devant Dieu, et ils élevèrent la voix, et ils pleurèrent amèrement.
And `alle camen to the hows of God in Silo, and thei saten in the `siyt of hym `til to euentid, and thei reisiden the vois, and bigunnen to wepe with greet yellyng,
3 Et ils dirent: Seigneur, pourquoi faut-il que ce malheur soit arrivé, et que l'une des tribus ait été retranchée d'Israël?
and seiden, Lord God of Israel, whi is this yuel don in thi puple, that to dai o lynage be takun awey of vs?
4 Le jour parut, et le peuple se leva de grand matin, et il bâtit en ce lieu un autel, et il offrit en holocauste des victimes sans tache.
Sotheli in the tother day thei risiden eerli, and bildyden an auter, and offriden there brent sacrifices and pesible sacrifices, and seiden,
5 Et les fils d'Israël dirent: Qui donc de tout le peuple n'a point paru à l'assemblée devant le Seigneur? Car ils avaient prêté un serment solennel contre ceux qui n'étaient point montés à Massepha devant le Seigneur, disant: Qu'ils soient mis à mort.
Who of alle the lynagis of Israel stiede not in to the oost of the Lord? For whanne thei weren in Maspha, thei `hadden bounde hem silf with a greuouse ooth, that thei that failiden schulden be slayn.
6 Et les fils d'Israël furent touchés de regret au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils dirent: L'une des tribus aujourd'hui a été retranchée d'Israël.
And the sones of Israel weren led bi penaunce on her brother Beniamyn, and bigunnen to seie, O lynage of Israel is takun awey;
7 Que ferons-nous pour les survivants qui n'ont point de femmes, nous qui avons juré devant le Seigneur de ne point leur donner nos filles en mariage?
wherof schulen thei take wyues? for alle we sworen in comyn, that we schulen not yyue oure douytris to hem.
8 Puis, ils dirent: Est-il quelqu'un parmi les tribus d'Israël qui ne soit point venu devant le Seigneur à Massopha? Et on leur déclara qu'il n'était venu au camp personne de Jabes-Galaad.
Therfor thei seiden, Who is of alle the lynagis of Israel, that stiede not to the Lord in Maspha? And lo! the dwelleris of Jabes of Galaad weren foundun, that thei weren not in the oost.
9 En effet, le peuple fut recensé, et il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabes-Galaad.
Also in that tyme, whanne thei weren in Silo, noon of hem was foundun there.
10 Aussitôt, la synagogue fit marcher deux mille vaillants hommes contre cette ville, et elle leur donna ses ordres, disant: Allez et passez au fil de l'épée les habitants de Jabes-Galaad.
Therfor thei senten ten thousynde strongeste men, and comaundiden to hem, Go ye, and smyte the dwelleris of Jabes of Galaad bi the scharpnesse of swerd, as wel the wyues as `the litle children of hem.
11 Voici ce que vous ferez: Tout homme et toute femme ayant connu la couche d'un homme, vous les anathématiserez; quant aux vierges, vous les réserverez. Et ils firent ainsi.
And this thing schal be, which ye `owen to kepe, sle ye alle of male kynde, and the wymmen, that knewen men fleischli; reserue ye the virgyns.
12 Or, ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabes-Galaad quatre cents vierges qui ne connaissaient ni les hommes, ni la couche des hommes, et ils les amenèrent au camp de Silo, en la terre de Chanaan.
And foure hundrid virgyns, that knewen not the bed of man, weren foundun of Jabes of Galaad; and thei brouyten hem to the castels in Silo, in to the lond of Chanaan.
13 Alors, toute la synagogue dépêcha des envoyés qui parlèrent aux fils de Benjamin en la roche de Rhemmon, et ils les appelèrent à un entretien pacifique.
And `thei senten messangeris to the sones of Beniamyn, that weren in the stoon of Remmon; and thei comaundiden to hem, that thei schulden resseyue tho wymmen in pees.
14 En ce temps-là, Benjamin revint aux fils d'Israël, et les fils d'Israël leur donnèrent en mariage les filles qu'ils avaient épargnées en Jabes-Galaad. Et ils l'eurent pour agréable.
And the sones of Beniamyn camen in that tyme, and the douytris of Jabes of Galaad weren youun to hem to wyues; forsothe thei founden not othere wymmen, whiche thei schulden yyue in lijk maner.
15 Cependant le peuple fut encore touché de regrets au sujet de Benjamin, parce que le Seigneur avait retranché l'une des tribus d'Israël.
And al Israel sorewide greetly, and dide penaunce on the sleyng of o lynage of Israel.
16 Et les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour que les survivants aient des femmes? Toutes les femmes de Benjamin avaient péri.
And the grettere men in birthe seiden, What schulen we do to the othere men, that han not take wyues? Alle the wymmen in Beniamyn felden doun,
17 Les anciens dirent encore: Que l'héritage reste à ceux de Benjamin qui survivent, et l'une des tribus d'Israël ne sera point effacée;
and it `is to vs to puruey `with greet cure and greet studie, that o lynage be not don awey fro Israel.
18 Mais, nous ne pouvons leur accorder en mariage nos filles, puis qu'entre nous nous avons juré, disant: Maudit celui qui mariera sa fille à Benjamin.
We moun not yyue oure douytris to hem, for we ben boundun with an ooth and cursyng, bi which we seiden, Be he cursid that yyueth of hise douytris a wijf to Beniamyn.
19 Ils ajoutèrent: C'est bientôt la fête du Seigneur que l'on a célébrée d'âge en âge à Silo (cette ville est au nord de Béthel, à l'orient du chemin qui monte de Béthel à Sichem et au midi de Lebona).
And thei token a counsel, and seiden, Lo! annyuersarie solempnyte of the Lord is in Silo, whych is set at the north of the citee of Bethel, and at the eest coost of the weie that goith from Bethel to Siccyma, and at the south of the citee of Lebona.
20 Puis, ils donnèrent leurs instructions aux fils de Benjamin, disant: Allez et cachez-vous dans les vignes.
And thei comaundiden to the sones of Beniamyn, and seiden, Go ye, be ye hid in the vyneris;
21 Vous observerez, et, quand vous verrez les filles des habitants de Silo sortir pour former des chœurs de danses, sortez aussi des vignes et enlevez chacun l'une des filles de Silo; emmenez-la en Benjamin.
and whanne ye seen douytris of Silo go forth bi custom to lede daunsis, go ye out of the vyneris sudeynli, and rauysche ye hem, eche man o wijf, and go ye in to the lond of Beniamyn.
22 Et, lorsque leurs pères ou leurs frères viendront nous demander justice, nous leur dirons pour vous: Faites miséricorde; nul de nous n'a pu prendre femme dans le combat; vous-mêmes ne nous en avez point donné; c'est de votre part qu'est la faute.
And whanne the fadris and britheren of hem schulen come, and bigynne to pleyne and plete ayens you, we schulen seie to hem, Haue ye mercy of hem; for thei rauyschiden not hem bi riyt of fiyteris and ouercomeris, but ye `yauen not to hem preiynge that thei schulden take; and the synne is of youre part.
23 Les fils de Benjamin agirent ainsi; ils prirent autant de femmes qu'ils étaient d'hommes, parmi celles qui dansaient; après les avoir ravies, ils les emmenèrent, et ils retournèrent en leur héritage, ou ils rebâtirent leurs villes et ils demeurèrent.
And the sones of Beniamyn diden as it was comaundid to hem, and bi her noumbre thei rauyschiden wyues to hem, ech man o wijf, of hem that ledden daunsis. And thei yeden in to her possessioun, and bildiden citees, and dwelliden in tho.
24 Les fils d'Israël en temps-là se dispersèrent, et chacun rentra dans sa tribu, dans sa famille, dans son héritage.
And the sones of Israel turneden ayen, bi lynagis and meynees, in to her tabernaclis.
25 Et, en ces jours-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël; chacun faisait ce que bon lui semblait.
In tho dayes was no kyng in Israel, but ech man dide this, that semyde ryytful to hym silf.
