Juges 19
1 Or, il y avait dans les montagnes d'Ephraïm un lévite qui prit une femme concubine de Bethléem en Juda;
At that time Israel didn't have a king. A Levite who was living in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim married a concubine-wife from Bethlehem in Judah.
2 Puis, sa femme le quitta pour s'en retourner à la maison de son père, à Bethléem en Juda; elle y était depuis quatre mois entiers,
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father's house in Bethlehem. She was there for four months.
3 Quand son mari, s'étant levé, s'en alla vers elle pour parler à son cœur et la ramener avec lui; il emmenait son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle l'introduisit dans la maison de son père; le père de la jeune femme le vit, et il fut joyeux de la rencontre.
Then her husband went after her, to talk kindly with her and bring her back home. With him went his servant and two donkeys. She took him to her father's house and when her father met him, he gladly welcomed him.
4 Le beau-père du lévite, le père de la jeune femme retint son gendre, qui resta avec lui trois jours; ils mangèrent, ils burent et ils logèrent chez lui.
Her father pressed him to stay with them, so he remained for three days, eating, drinking, and sleeping there.
5 Le quatrième jour parut; et, s'étant levé de grand matin, ils se préparèrent à partir. Et le père de la femme dit au jeune époux: Fortifie ton cœur par une bouchée de pain; après cela, vous partirez.
On the fourth day he and his concubine got up early in the morning and prepared to leave, but her father said to his son-in-law, “You'll feel better if you have something to eat before you go.”
6 Tous les deux s'assirent donc, ils mangèrent et burent ensemble, et le père de la jeune femme dit à l'époux: Allons, passe ici la nuit, et ton cœur s'en trouvera bien.
So the two men sat down to eat and drink together. The father said to his son-in law, “Please agree to spend another night here, and you can enjoy yourself!”
7 Mais l'homme se leva pour partir; puis, son père le contraignant, il s'assit, et il passa la nuit dans la maison.
The man got up to leave, but his father-in-law pressed him to stay, so in the end he spent the night there.
8 Le cinquième jour, il se leva de grand matin pour s'en aller, et le père de la jeune femme lui dit: Fortifie ton cœur, reste ici jusqu'au déclin du jour. Et ils mangèrent ensemble.
On the fifth day he got up early in the morning to leave. But his father-in-law said, “Eat before you go, then leave later this afternoon.” So they had a meal together.
9 Quand l'homme se leva pour partir avec sa femme et son serviteur, son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme lui dit: Voilà que, le jour décline vers le soir, passe la nuit avec nous, et ton cœur s'en trouvera bien; demain, vous vous lèverez de grand matin, et tu retourneras en ta demeure.
When he got up to leave with his concubine and his servant, his father-in-law told him, “Look it's late—it's already evening. Spend the night here. The day's almost over. Stay here the night and enjoy yourself, then tomorrow you can get up early and be on your way home.”
10 Mais l'homme ne consentit point à passer là encore une nuit; il se leva et partit, et il alla jusqu'en face de Jébus, la même que Jérusalem; il avait avec lui ses deux ânes chargés, et sa femme.
But the man didn't want to spend another night, so he got up and left. He headed towards the town of Jebus (now called Jerusalem) with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.
11 Ils poussèrent donc jusqu'à Jébus. Or, le jour était bien avancé, et le serviteur dit à son maître: Viens, et nous entrerons dans cette ville de Jébus, et nous y passerons la nuit.
As they approached Jebus the day was over, the servant said to his master, “Sir, why don't we stop here at this Jebusite town for the night?”
12 Le maître lui dit: N'entre pas dans une ville étrangère, où il n'y a point de fils d'Israël; allons jusqu'à Gabaa.
But his master replied, “No, we're not going to stop in this town where only foreigners live and no Israelites. We'll continue on to Gibeah.”
13 Puis, il ajouta: Allons, approchons-nous de l'une de ces deux villes; nous logerons à Gabaa ou à Rhama.
Then he told his servant, “Come on, let's try and get to Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night somewhere there.”
14 Et, passant outre, ils marchèrent; le soleil se coucha comme ils traversaient le territoire de Gabaa, qui est de la tribu de Benjamin.
So they carried on and reached Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin just as the sun was setting.
15 Ils entrèrent en cette ville pour y passer la nuit; et étant entrés, ils s'assirent sur la place de la ville. Or, il n'y eut pas un homme qui les conduisit dans sa maison afin de les loger.
They stopped in Gibeah to spend the night, and sat down in the town's main square, but no one invited them to come and stay.
16 Cependant, un homme âgé revenait, sur le tard, de ses travaux des champs, et cet homme était des montagnes d'Ephraïm; il habitait Gabaa, et les hommes de cette ville étaient des fils de Benjamin.
But later that evening an old man came by, returning from working in the fields. He was from the hill country of Ephraim, but was now living in Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin.
17 Il leva les yeux, et il vit le voyageur sur la place de la ville; alors, l'homme âgé lui dit: Où vas-tu, et d'où es-tu parti?
He looked over and noticed the traveler in the square and asked, “Where are you going and where have you come from?”
18 Et le lévite lui répondit: Nous allons de Bethléem en Juda, aux montagnes d'Ephraïm. Je suis de ce lieu; j'étais allé à Bethléem en Juda, et je retourne à ma maison, et il n'y a pas ici un homme qui me conduise en sa demeure.
“We've come from Bethlehem in Judah and we're going to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim,” the man replied. “I'm from there and I went to Bethlehem, and now I'm going to the Lord's Temple. No one here has invited me to stay.
19 Cependant, nous avons pour nos ânes de la litière et du fourrage; nous avons du pain et du vin pour moi, ta servante et le jeune homme; aucune chose ne manque donc à tes serviteurs.
There's straw and food for our donkeys, and we your servants have bread and wine—enough for me, the woman, and my servant. We have all we need.”
20 Alors, l'homme âgé reprit: La paix soit avec toi; d'ailleurs, tu trouveras chez moi tout ce dont tu as besoin; tu ne passeras pas la nuit sur cette place.
“You are welcome to stay with me,” the man replied. “I can let you have everything you need. Just don't spend the night here in the square.”
21 Et il l'introduisit dans sa maison, où il prépara un endroit pour loger ses ânes; puis, ils se lavèrent les pieds, et ils mangèrent et ils burent.
He took him home and fed the donkeys. The travelers washed their feet and then started to eat and drink.
22 Ils étaient donc à se réjouir le cœur. Or, voilà que les hommes de la ville, fils de parents pervers, entourèrent la maison, frappèrent à la porte, et dirent à l'homme, au maître de la maison, au vieillard: Amène-nous l'homme qui est entré en ta demeure, afin que nous le connaissions.
While they were enjoying themselves, some depraved men from the town came and surrounded the house, and banged on the door, shouting to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to stay in your house so we can have sex with him.”
23 Et le maître de la maison sortit auprès d'eux, et il dit: Mes frères, ne maltraitez pas cet homme, après qu'il est entré dans ma maison; ne commettez pas une action si insensée.
The man who owned the house went outside and told them, “My brothers, don't act in such an evil way! This man is a guest in my house. Don't do something so disgusting!
24 J'ai une fille vierge, et lui a une femme; je vais vous les amener: déshonorez-les, traitez-les comme bon vous semblera; mais, avec cet homme, ne faites pas l'action insensée que vous dites.
Look, here's my virgin daughter and the man's concubine. Let me bring them out and you can rape them and do whatever you want to them. But don't do something so disgusting to this man.”
25 Mais les hommes ne consentirent point à l'écouter; enfin, le lévite prit sa femme, et il la leur conduisit au dehors; ils la connurent et l'outragèrent toute la nuit jusqu'au matin, et ils la renvoyèrent lorsqu'ils virent poindre le jour.
But the men refused to listen, so the man grabbed his concubine and threw her outside to them. They raped her and abused her all night until the morning, and only discarded her at dawn.
26 Et la femme s'en fut à l'aurore; elle tomba devant la porte de la maison où était son mari, elle y resta jusqu'au jour.
As night turned into day she returned to the house where her master was staying and collapsed in front of the door as it got light.
27 Le lévite se leva dès le matin; il ouvrit la porte de la maison, il sortit pour reprendre sa route, et voilà que la femme, sa concubine, était étendue devant la porte de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
Her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house. He went out to continue his journey and there was his concubine, stretched out in the doorway of the house, with her hands holding onto the doorstep.
28 Et il lui dit: Lève-toi, et partons. Elle ne répondit point, car elle était morte. Et il la plaça sur un âne, et il l'emmena où il demeurait.
“Get up, let's go,” he told her, but there was no answer. Then the man lifted her onto his donkey and went home.
29 Là, saisissant son glaive, il prit sa femme, et il la divisa en douze parts, qu'il envoya par tout Israël.
When he got home he took a knife, and holding onto his concubine, cut her up, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent these pieces of her to every part of Israel.
30 Et tout homme qui les vit s'écria: Jamais, depuis le jour où les fils d'Israël sortirent d'Egypte jusqu'à celui-ci, pareille chose ne s'est vue. Tenez conseil au sujet de cette femme, et parlez.
Everyone who saw her said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen before, from the time the Israelites left Egypt up until now. You should think about what happened to her! Decide what to do! Speak up!”
