Juges 11
1 Jephté, fils de Galaad, était un homme très-fort; il était né d'une prostituée qui l'avait eu de Galaad.
And so in that tyme Jepte, a man of Galaad, was a ful strong man, and fiytere, the sone of a womman hoore, which Jepte was borun of Galaad.
2 Or, la femme de Galaad avait enfanté pour celui-ci des fils; et les fils de cette femme devinrent grands, et ils chassèrent Jephté, et ils lui dirent: Tu n'auras point part à l'héritage de notre père, parce que tu es le fils d'une prostituée.
Forsothe Galaad hadde a wijf, of which he hadde sones, whiche aftir that thei encressiden, castiden out Jepte, and seiden, Thou maist not be eir in the hows of oure fadir, for thou art born of a modir auoutresse.
3 Jephté s'enfuit donc de devant la face de ses frères, et il demeura en la terre de Tob. Et des hommes dénués de tout se rassemblèrent autour de Jephté, et ils sortirent avec lui.
`Whiche britheren he fledde, and eschewide, and dwellide in the lond of Tob; and pore men and `doynge thefte weren gaderid to hym, and sueden as a prince.
4 Lorsque les fils d'Ammon furent en guerre avec Israël,
In tho daies the sones of Amon fouyten ayens Israel;
5 Les anciens de Galaad allèrent prendre Jephté en la terre de Tob.
and whanne thei contynueden scharpli, the grettere men in birthe of Galaad, yeden to take in to `the help of hem silf Jepte fro the lond of Tob;
6 Et ils dirent à Jephté: Viens, tu seras notre chef, et nous livrerons bataille aux fils d'Ammon.
and thei seiden to hym, Come thou, and be oure prince, and fiyte ayens the sones of Amon.
7 Et Jephté dit aux anciens de Galaad: N'est-ce point vous qui m'avez haï, et qui m'avez expulsé de la maison paternelle, et qui m'avez chassé loin de vous? Pourquoi donc êtes-vous venus ici, maintenant que vous avez besoin de moi?
To whiche he answeride, Whethir not ye it ben, that haten me, and castiden me out of the hows of mi fadir, and now ye camen to me, and weren compellid bi nede?
8 Et les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: Nous sommes venus te trouver, pour que tu viennes avec nous, que tu combattes les fils d'Ammon, et que tu sois le chef de tous ceux qui habitent Galaad.
And the princes of Galaad seiden to Jepte, Therfor for this cause we camen now to thee, that thou go with vs, and fiyt ayens the sones of Amon; and that thou be the duyk of alle men that dwellen in Galaad.
9 Et Jephté dit aux fils de Galaad: Si vous m'emmenez pour livrer bataille aux fils d'Ammon, et si le Seigneur me les livre, vous me laisserez dominer sur vous.
And Jepte seide to hem, Whether ye camen verili to me, that Y fiyte for you ayens the sones of Amon, and if the Lord schal bitake hem in to myn hondis, schal Y be youre prince?
10 Et les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: Que le Seigneur soit témoin entre nous, si nous n'agissons pas selon ta parole.
Whiche answeriden to hym, The Lord hym silf, that herith these thingis, is mediatour and witnesse, that we schulen do oure biheestis.
11 Jephté partit donc avec les anciens de Galaad; le peuple le mit à sa tête et le reconnut pour chef; et Jephté dit toutes ses paroles devant le Seigneur en Massépha.
And so Jepte wente with the princes of Galaad, and al the puple made hym her prince; and Jepte spak alle hise wordis bifor the Lord in Maspha.
12 Et Jephté dépêcha des envoyés au roi des fils d'Ammon, disant: Qu'y a-t- il entre moi et toi, pour que tu viennes ici apporter la guerre en ma contrée?
And he sente messangeris to the kyng of the sones of Amon, whiche messangeris schulden seie `of his persoone, What is to me and to thee, for thou hast come `ayens me to waaste my lond?
13 Le roi des fils d'Amnion dit aux envoyés de Jephté: Parce qu'Israël, en venant d'Egypte, s'est emparé de mon territoire depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jaboc, et jusqu'au Jourdain; maintenant rends-nous-le pacifiquement, et je me retirerai.
To whiche the kyng answeride, For Israel whanne he stiede fro Egipt took awei my lond, fro the coostis of Arnon `til to Jaboch and to Jordan, now therfor yeelde it to me with pees.
14 Jephté insista, et il dépêcha au roi des fils d'Ammon des envoyés,
Bi whiche massangeris Jepte sente eft, and comaundide to hem, that thei schulden seie to the kyng of Amon,
15 Qui lui dirent: Voici ce que dit Jephté: Israël n'a point pris la terre de Moab, ni la terre des fils d'Ammon.
Jepte seith these thingis, Israel took not the lond of Moab, nether the lond of the sones of Amon;
16 En venant de l'Egypte, Israël a traversé le désert jusqu'à la mer de Siph, et est arrivé à Cadès.
but whanne thei stieden fro Egipt, `he yede bi the wildirnesse `til to the Reed See, and cam in to Cades;
17 De là, Israël a envoyé des messagers au roi d'Edom, disant: Je passerai par ta terre, et le roi d'Edom ne les a pas écoutés; et Israël a envoyé au roi de Moab, qui n'a pas voulu acquiescer à leur demande. Et Israël a campé en Cadès;
and he sente messangeris to the kyng of Edom, and seide, Suffre thou me, that Y go thoruy thi lond; which kyng nolde assente to his preyeres. Also Israel sente to the kyng of Moab, and he dispiside to yyue passage;
18 Puis, il s'est avancé par le désert; il a tourné autour de la terre d'Edom et de la terre de Moab; il a passé à l'orient de la terre de Moab, il a dressé ses tentes au delà du torrent d'Arnon; mais il n'est point entré en Moab, puisque l'Arnon est hors des limites de Moab.
and so Israel dwellyde in Cades, and cumpasside bi the side the lond of Edom, and the lond of Moab; and he cam to the eest coost of the lond of Moab, and settide tentis biyende Arnon, nether he wolde entre in to the termes of Moab; for Arnon is the ende of the lond of Moab.
19 Après cela, Israël a envoyé des messagers à Sehon, roi des Amorrhéens, roi d'Esebon, et Israël lui a dit: Permets que nous traversions ta terre jusqu'au pays qui nous appartient.
And so Israel sente messangeris to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, that dwellide in Esebon; and thei seiden to hym, Suffre thou, that Y passe thorouy thi lond `til to the ryuer.
20 Séhon ne s'est pas fié à Israël pour le laisser traverser son territoire, et Séhon a rassemblé tout son peuple, et il a campé en Jasa, et il a combattu Israël.
And he dispiside the wordis of Israel, and suffride not hym passe bi hise termes, but with a multitude with out noumbre gaderid to gidere he yede out ayens Israel, and ayenstood strongli.
21 Le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël a livré Séhon et tout son peuple aux mains d'Israël, qui l'a accablé; et Israël a pris possession de tout le territoire de l'Amorrhéen qui habitait cette terre,
And the Lord bitook hym with al his oost in to the hondis of Israel; and Israel smoot hym, and hadde in possessioun al the lond of Ammorrey,
22 Et il a pris possession de toutes les limites de l'Amorrhéen,
dwellere of that cuntrey, and al the coostis therof fro Arnon `til to Jaboch, and fro the wildirnesse `til to Jordan.
23 Et maintenant que le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël a fait disparaître l'Amorrhéen de devant la face de son peuple Israël, ce serait toi qui prendrais son héritage?
Therfor the Lord God of Israel distriede Ammorrey, fiytynge ayens hym for his puple Israel. And wolt thou now haue in possessioun `his lond? Whether not tho thingis whiche Chamos, thi god, hadde in possessioun, ben due to thee bi riyt?
24 N'est-ce point toi qui hérites de ceux dont Chamos, ton dieu, te livre l'héritage? Hériterons-nous de tous ceux que le Seigneur notre Dieu a fait disparaître de devant vous?
Forsothe tho thingis whiche `oure Lord God ouercomere gat, schulen falle in to oure possessioun;
25 D'ailleurs, l'emportes-tu en vaillance sur Balac, fils de Sephor, roi de Moab? Est-ce qu'il a combattu et combattu Israël? est-ce qu'il a lui fait guerre sur guerre,
no but in hap thou art betere than Balach, the sone of Sephor, kyng of Moab, ether thou maist preue, that he stryuede ayens Israel, and fauyt ayens hym,
26 Lorsque Israël eut habité trois cents ans Esebon et son territoire, Aroer et son territoire, et toutes les villes auprès du Jourdain? Et pourquoi donc pendant tout ce temps ne les as-tu pas réclamées?
whanne he dwellide in Esebon, and in townes therof, and in Aroer, and in townes therof, and in alle citees biyende Jordan, bi thre hundrid yeer. Whi in so myche time assaieden ye no thing on this axyng ayen?
27 Ce n'est donc point moi aujourd'hui qui ai failli envers toi; tu agis mal à mon égard, en apportant la guerre en ma contrée; que le Seigneur juge entre les fils d'Israël et les fils d'Ammon.
Therfor not Y do synne ayens thee, but thou doist yuel ayens me, and bryngist in batels not iust to me; the Lord, iuge of this dai, deme bitwixe the sones of Israel and bitwixe the sones of Amon.
28 Or, le roi des fils d'Ammon ne fit point attention aux paroles que Jephté lui avait fait dire.
And the kyng of the sones of Amon nolde assente to the wordis of Jepte, whiche he sente bi messangeris.
29 Et l'Esprit du Seigneur vint sur Jephté, qui traversa Galaad, Manassé, et passa au delà des hauteurs de Galaad, de l'autre côté des fils d'Ammon.
Therfor the spirit of the Lord was maad on Jepte, and he cumpasside Galaad and Manasses, Maspha and Galaad; and he passide fro thennus to the sones of Amon,
30 Et Jephté fit un vœu au Seigneur; il dit: Si vous livrez à ma main les fils d'Ammon,
and made a vow to the Lord, and seide, If thou schalt bitake the sones of Amon in to myn hondis,
31 Le premier qui, venant à ma rencontre, franchira les portes de ma maison, lorsque j'y retournerai après la paix, celui-là sera au Seigneur; je le lui offrirai en holocauste.
who euer goith out first of the dores of myn hows, and cometh ayens me turnynge ayen with pees fro the sones of Amon, Y schal offre hym brent sacrifice to the Lord.
32 Jephté s'approcha donc des fils d'Ammon pour les combattre, et le Seigneur les livra à ses mains;
And Jepte yede to the sones of Amon, to fiyte ayens hem, whiche the Lord bitook in to hise hondis;
33 Il les écrasa dans vingt villes, depuis Aroer jusqu'à l'Arnon, et jusqu'à Ebel-Charmin; il les frappa d'une très-grande plaie, et les fils d'Ammon furent humbles devant la face des fils d'Israël.
and he smoot fro Aroer `til to thou comest in to Mennyth, twenti citees, and `til to Abel, which is set aboute with vyneris, with ful greet veniaunce; and the sones of Amon weren maad low of the sones of Israel.
34 Puis, Jephté revint à Massépha en sa maison, et voilà que sa fille en sortit à sa rencontre, avec des tambours et des chœurs; elle était son unique enfant, il n'avait point d'autre fille, ni de fils.
Forsothe whanne Jepte turnede ayen in to Maspha, his hows, his oon gendrid douyter cam to hym with tympanys and croudis; for he hadde not othere fre children.
35 Lorsqu'il la vit il déchira ses vêtements, et il dit: Hélas! hélas! ma fille, tu m'as consterné cruellement, et toi seule causes ma consternation, car j'ai contre toi ouvert la bouche devant le Seigneur, et je ne puis m'en dédire.
And whanne `sche was seyn, he to-rente his clothis, and seide, Allas! my douytir, thou hast disseyued me, and thou art disseyued; for Y openyde my mouth to the Lord, and Y may do noon other thing.
36 Et elle lui dit; Père, as-tu ouvert la bouche devant le Seigneur? Dispose de moi selon ce qui est sorti de ta bouche, puisque le Seigneur a tiré par toi vengeance des fils d'Ammon tes ennemis,
To whom sche answeride, My fadir, if thou openydist thi mouth to the Lord, do to me what euer thing thou bihiytist, while veniaunce and victorie of thin enemyes is grauntid to thee.
37 Elle dit encore à son père: Que mon père exauce cette prière: Laisse à ta fille deux mois; et je partirai; et j'irai par les monts, et je pleurerai ma virginité, moi et mes compagnes.
And sche seide to the fadir, Yyue thou to me oneli this thing, which Y biseche; suffre thou me that in two monethis Y cumpasse hillis, and biweile my maidynhed with my felowis.
38 Et il lui dit: Pars; et il la congédia pour deux mois; elle partit, elle et ses compagnes, et elle pleura sa virginité sur les monts.
To whom he answeride, Go thou. And he sufferide hir in two monethis. And whanne sche hadde go with hir felowis and pleiferis, sche biwepte hir maydynhed in the hillis.
39 A la fin des deux mois, elle retourna vers son père, et il accomplit en elle le vœu qu'il avait fait; or, elle ne connut point d'homme, et elle fut l'occasion d'une loi en Israël.
And whanne twey monethis weren fillid, sche turnede ayen to hir fadir, and he dide to hir as he avowide; and sche knew not fleischli a man. Fro thennus a custom cam in Israel,
40 D'âge en âge, les filles d'Israël s'en vont quatre jours par an pleurer la fille de Jephté, fils de Galaad.
and the custom is kept, that aftir the `ende of the yeer the douytris of Israel come togidere, and biweile `the douytir of Jepte of Galaad `foure daies.
