Josué 24
1 Josué rassembla toutes les tribus d'Israël en Silo; il convoqua leurs anciens, leurs scribes, leurs juges, et il les plaça devant Dieu.
Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem. Then he called the elders, leaders, judges, and officials and they came and stood before the Tabernacle of God.
2 Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël: Nos pères, dans les premiers temps, et Tharé, père de Nachor, ont demeuré au delà du fleuve, et ils ont servi des dieux étrangers.
Joshua said to all the people, “The Lord, the God of Israel, says this: ‘Long, long ago your forefathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods.
3 Et j'ai pris votre père Abraham, au delà du fleuve, je l'ai amené en cette terre; j'ai multiplié sa race, je lui ai donne Isaac, et à Isaac, j'ai
I brought your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac.
4 Donné Jacob et Esau; j'ai donné à Esau pour héritage la montagne de Seir. Or, Jacob et ses fils sont descendus en Egypte, et ils sont devenus en ce pays une nation grande, nombreuse et puissante. Les Egyptiens les ont opprimés.
I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau. I gave to Esau the hill country of Seir to own, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.
5 Mais, j'ai frappé l'Egypte avec les miracles que j'ai faits au milieu d'elle;
I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought plagues on the people of Egypt, and I brought you out.
6 Et après cela, Dieu a fait sortir vos pères de l'Egypte; vous êtes entrés dans la mer Rouge; les Egyptiens y ont poursuivi vos pères avec des chars et des chevaux.
Yes, I brought your forefathers out, but when you arrived at the Red Sea the Egyptians were chasing after your forefathers with chariots and horsemen.
7 Et nous avons crié au Seigneur, et il a placé une nuée sombre entre nous et les Egyptiens, et il a ramené sur eux les eaux de la mer, et il les en a couverts. Vos yeux ont vu tout ce que le Seigneur a fait en Egypte, et vous êtes restés bien des jours dans le désert.
Your forefathers called out to the Lord for help, and he placed darkness between you and the Egyptians. Then he brought the sea back over them and they drowned. You saw what I did with your own eyes in Egypt. Then you lived for many years in the wilderness.
8 Enfin, le Seigneur nous a conduits en la terre des Amorrhéens qui demeuraient sur l'autre rive du Jourdain, et il nous les a livres; vous avez pris possession de leur territoire, et vous les avez exterminés devant votre face.
After that I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived on the other side of the Jordan. They fought against you but I handed them over to you to defeat and you took over their land. I destroyed them before you.
9 En ce temps-là, Balac, fils de Sephor, roi de Moab, s'est levé, et il s'est rangé en bataille contre Israël; et il a envoyé chercher Balaam pour qu'il vous maudît.
When Balak, son of Zippor, the king of Moab, wanted to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam, son of Beor, to come and curse you.
10 Mais le Seigneur, qui ne voulait point vous perdre, nous a bénis, et il nous a tirés de leurs mains, et il nous les a livrés.
But I wasn't willing to listen to Balaam, so instead he blessed you repeatedly, and saved you from Balak.
11 Ensuite, vous avez traversé le Jourdain et vous êtes arrivés à Jéricho; les habitants de Jéricho, l'Amorrhéen, le Chananéen, le Phérézéen, l'Hévéen, le Jébuséen, l'Hétéen et le Gergéséen, vous ont résisté; le Seigneur les a livrés à vos mains.
You crossed the Jordan and arrived at Jericho where the men of Jericho fought against you. So did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
12 Il a lancé avant vous des essaims de guêpes, et il a chassé devant vous douze rois des Amorrhéens, non par votre glaive, non par vos flèches;
But I handed them over to you to defeat. And I sent the hornet before you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. You did not win using your swords or your bows!
13 Il vous a donné une terre que vous n'aviez point labourée, et des villes que vous n'aviez point bâties, dont vous avez fait vos demeures. Il vous a donné des vignes et des oliviers que vous n'aviez point plantés, dont vous avez mangé les fruits.
I gave you a land you didn't work for and towns you didn't build. Now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves you didn't plant.’
14 Maintenant donc, craignez le Seigneur; servez-le en toute droiture et justice. Faites disparaître les dieux étrangers qu'ont servis vos pères au delà de l'Euphrate ou en Egypte, et servez le Seigneur.
So respect the Lord and worship him, sincerely and faithfully. Get rid of the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and worship the Lord.
15 Si cependant il ne vous est point agréable de servir le Seigneur, choisissez-vous dès aujourd'hui quelque dieu à servir, soit parmi ceux de vos pères au delà de l'Euphrate, soit parmi ceux des Amorrhéens dont vous habitez la terre. Pour moi et ma maison, nous servirons le Seigneur, parce qu'il est saint.
But if you don't want to worship the Lord, choose today who you want to worship! Is it going to be the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the Euphrates? Or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you're now living? But as for me and my family, we will worship the Lord!”
16 Et le peuple répondant, dit: Dieu nous préserve d'abandonner le Seigneur pour servir d'autres dieux.
The people responded, “We are never going to give up on the Lord and worship other gods!
17 Le Seigneur notre Dieu est le seul Dieu. C'est lui qui a fait sortir d'Egypte nous et nos pères, et qui nous a gardés tout le long de la voie que nous avons suivie, et au milieu de toutes les nations que nous avons traversées.
For the Lord our God brought us and our forefathers out of slavery in Egypt. He was the one who did great miracles before our very eyes. He looked after us on the way as we traveled through the lands of many nations.
18 Et le Seigneur a chassé devant notre face l'Amorrhéen et toutes les nations qui habitaient la terre. Nous servirons donc le Seigneur, car il est notre Dieu.
The Lord drove out before us the Amorites and all the other nations who were living in the land. So we will worship the Lord, for he is our God!”
19 Et Josué dit au peuple: Vous ne pourrez point servir le Seigneur: car c'est un Dieu saint; c'est un Dieu jaloux, et il ne tolèrera point vos péchés ni vos iniquité.
Joshua told the people, “Remember that the Lord is a holy and jealous God. You won't be able to worship him, and he won't forgive your rebellion and sins
20 Dès que vous abandonnerez le Seigneur et que vous servirez d'autres dieux, il fondra sur vous pour vous punir, et il vous accablera de maux au lieu du bien qu'il vous a fait.
if you give up on him and worship foreign gods. He will turn against you and destroy you despite all the good he has done for you.”
21 Et le peuple dit à Josué: Non, non; nous servirons le Seigneur.
“Don't say that!” the people replied. “We will worship the Lord!”
22 Et Josué dit au peuple: Vous êtes vous-mêmes témoins entre vous que vous avez choisi le service du Seigneur.
Then Joshua cautioned the people, “You have made yourselves witnesses against yourselves by saying that you have chosen to worship the Lord.” “Yes, we are witnesses,” the people replied.
23 Et maintenant, faites disparaître les dieux étrangers que vous avez parmi vous, et dirigez vos cœurs vers le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël.
“Then get rid of those foreign gods you have and promise to be loyal only to the Lord, the God of Israel,” Joshua told them.
24 Et le peuple dit à Josué: Nous servirons le Seigneur, et nous serons dociles à sa voix.
The people said to Joshua, “We will worship the Lord our God and we will obey him.”
25 Ce jour-là, Josué fit alliance avec le peuple, et il lui donna la loi et le jugement en Silo, devant le tabernacle du Dieu d'Israël.
So Joshua made a solemn agreement between the people and the Lord that day in Shechem, obligating them to follow all the Lord's laws and instructions.
26 Et il écrivit toutes ces paroles dans le livre des lois de Dieu; il prit une grande pierre, et il la dressa, sous le térébinthe, devant le Seigneur.
Joshua recorded this in the Book of the Law of God, and he set up a large stone under the oak tree near the Lord's sanctuary.
27 Et Josué dit au peuple. Voyez cette pierre; elle portera parmi vous témoignage; elle a entendu tout ce qui vient d'être dit ici par le Seigneur; car c'est lui qui vous a parlé aujourd'hui, et cette pierre portera parmi vous témoignage jusqu'aux derniers des jours, lorsque vous viendrez à mentir au Seigneur mon Dieu.
Joshua said to the people, “Look at this stone. It stands here as a witness against us for it has heard everything the Lord has told us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny what you have promised your God.”
28 Josué alors congédia le peuple, et chacun se rendit à sa demeure.
Then Joshua dismissed the people, sending them to their allotted lands.
29 Après ces choses, Josué, fils de Nau, serviteur de Dieu, mourut âgé de cent dix ans.
Later, after all this, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.
30 On l'ensevelit sur les limites de son héritage, en Thamnasarach, dans les montagnes d'Ephraïm, au nord des montagnes de Galaad.
They buried him in Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash, the land he had been allocated.
31 Israël servit donc le Seigneur durant tous les jours de Josué, et durant tous les jours des anciens dont la vie s'était prolongée avec la sienne, et qui avaient vu toutes les œuvres du Seigneur en faveur d'Israël.
The Israelites continued to worship the Lord throughout Joshua's life, and throughout the lifetimes of the elders who outlived him, those who had seen all that the Lord had done for Israel.
32 Les fils d'Israël avaient rapporté de l'Egypte les ossements de Joseph, et ils les inhumèrent à Sichem dans le champ que Jacob avait acheté au prix de cent agneaux, des Amorrhéens qui habitaient Sichem, et qu'il avait donné à Joseph.
The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought with them from Egypt, they buried in Shechem in the piece of ground Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of silver. This land was inherited by Joseph's sons.
33 Ensuite, Eléazar, fils d'Aaron le grand prêtre, mourut, et il fut enseveli en Gabaar, qu'il avait donnée à Phinées, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm.
And Eleazar, son of Aaron, died and they buried him at Gibeah, in the hill country of Ephraim, land which had been given to his son Phinehas.
