Josué 23

1 Et bien des jours s'étaient écoulés après que le Seigneur avait donné le repos à Israël; les ennemis qui l'entouraient étaient désarmés. Josué était vieux, et avait vécu bien des jours.

And it came to pass after many days, when the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Joshua was old and well stricken in years;

2 Et Josué convoqua tous les fils d'Israël, leurs anciens, leurs chefs, leurs juges, leurs scribes, et il leur dit: Je suis vieux, j'ai vécu bien des jours,

that Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said unto them: 'I am old and well stricken in years.

3 Et vous avez vu comment le Seigneur notre Dieu a traité toutes ces nations devant vous, parce que le Seigneur lui-même a combattu pour vous.

And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God, He it is that hath fought for you.

4 Vous voyez que je vous ai soumis ce qui reste de toutes ces nations parmi vous, sur les territoires de vos tribus; je les ai exterminées entre le Jourdain et la grande mer qui sera votre limite à l'occident.

Behold, I have allotted unto you for an inheritance, according to your tribes, these nations that remain, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun.

5 Le Seigneur votre Dieu lui-même continuera de les exterminer devant vous, jusqu'à ce qu'elles soient toutes détruites; il enverra contre elles des bêtes farouches, tant qu'il ne les aura pas exterminées devant vous, elles et leurs rois; vous hériterez de leurs terres, comme l'a dit le Seigneur notre Dieu.

And the LORD your God, He shall thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God spoke unto you.

6 Efforcez-vous donc avec zèle de garder et de pratiquer tout ce qui est écrit au livre de la loi de Moïse, afin de ne vous en écarter ni à droite ni à gauche;

Therefore be ye very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

7 Afin de ne vous point mêler à ces nations qui existent encore. Que le nom de leurs dieux ne soit jamais prononcé parmi vous; gardez-vous de les servir ou de les adorer.

that ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor worship them;

8 Mais restez fortement attachés au Seigneur notre Dieu, comme vous l'avez été jusqu'à ce jour.

but cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day;

9 Et le Seigneur exterminera, devant votre face, ces nations grandes et puissantes; nulle, jusqu'à ce jour, n'a tenu devant vous.

wherefore the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and mighty; but as for you, no man hath stood against you unto this day.

10 Un seul de vous a mis en fuite mille hommes, parce que le Seigneur notre Dieu lui-même a combattu pour vous, comme il vous l'a dit.

One man of you hath chased a thousand; for the LORD your God, He it is that fought for you, as He spoke unto you.

11 Et vous veillerez diligemment à aimer le Seigneur votre Dieu.

Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

12 Car, si vous vous détournez de lui, si vous vous joignez aux nations qui sont restées parmi vous, si vous contractez chez elles des mariages, si vous vous mêlez à elles et elles à vous,

Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you;

13 Vous reconnaîtrez que le Seigneur ne continuera plus d'exterminer ces nations devant votre face. Et pour vous, elles seront des filets, des pièges, des clous sous vos pieds, et des flèches dans vos yeux, jusqu'à ce que vous soyez effacés de cette terre fortunée que vous a donnée le Seigneur notre Dieu.

know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap unto you, and a scourge in your sides, and pricks in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

14 Pour moi, je m'en vais à grands pas sur le chemin de la vie, comme font ceux qui sont sur la terre. Et vous, vous reconnaîtrez, en vos cœurs et en vos âmes, que nulle parole n'est tombée à terre de toutes celles qu'a prononcées le Seigneur notre Dieu sur tout ce qui vous concernait, et qu'il n'en a laissé aucune en arrière.

And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth; consider ye therefore in all your heart and in all your soul, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, not one thing hath failed thereof.

15 Or, de même que toutes les bonnes paroles du Seigneur se sont accomplies pour vous, de même le Seigneur sera fidèle à toutes ses menaces, jusqu'à ce qu'il vous ait effacés de cette terre fortunée que vous a donnée le Seigneur,

And it shall come to pass, that as all the good things are come upon you of which the LORD your God spoke unto you, so shall the LORD bring upon you all the evil things, until He have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.

16 Si vous violez l'alliance du Seigneur notre Dieu que lui-même vous a donnée pour loi, si vous vous en allez servir d'autres dieux et les adorer.

When ye transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which He hath given unto you.'
