1 Et lorsque Adonibézec, roi de Jérusalem, ouït dire que Josué, après avoir pris Haï, l'avait détruite, qu'il avait traité cette ville et son roi de la même manière que Jéricho et le roi de Jéricho, et que les Gabaonites s'étaient livrés à Josué et à Israël,

2 Lui et les siens eurent aussi d'eux une grande crainte; car ils n'ignoraient pas que la ville de Gabaon était grande comme l'une des métropoles, et que tous ses gens de guerre étaient vaillants.

5 Et les cinq rois des Jébuséens se mirent en marche, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jérimuth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d'Odollam, eux et tous leurs peuples, et ils investirent Gabaon, et ils l'assiégèrent.

6 Alors, les Gabaonites envoyèrent à Josué dans le camp d'Israël, en Galgala, disant: Ne retire pas tes mains de tes serviteurs; monte auprès de nous rapidement; viens à notre secours et délivre-nous. Car tous les rois des Amorrhéens qui habitent la montagne se sont réunis contre nous.

7 Et Josué partit de Galgala, et avec lui tous les gens de guerre, tous les hommes dans la force de l'âge.

8 Et le Seigneur dit à Josué: Ne les crains pas, car je les ai livrés à tes mains, et pas un d'eux ne subsistera devant vous.

9 Josué marcha donc toute la nuit, au sortir de Galgala, et parut devant eux à l'improviste.

10 Et le Seigneur les frappa de stupeur à l'aspect des fils d'Israël; le Seigneur à Gabaon en fit un grand massacre, et Israël les poursuivit par le chemin qui descend le mont Oronin, les taillant en pièces jusqu'à Azéca et Macéda.

11 Pendant qu'ils fuyaient devant les fils d'Israël, sur les pentes du mont Oronin, le Seigneur jeta sur eux, du haut du ciel, des pierres de grêle jusqu'à Azeca, et ces pierres de grêle en tuèrent plus que les fils d'Israël n'en avaient fait périr par le glaive dans le combat.

12 Alors, Josué parla au Seigneur, le jour même où Dieu avait livré l'Amorrhéen au bras d'Israël, lorsqu'il les eut accablés en Gabaon, et qu'ils furent écrasés devant les fils d'Israël. Et Josué dit: Que le soleil s'arrête sur Gabaon, et la lune sur le val d'Aïlon.

13 Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune se tint en repos, jusqu'à ce que le Seigneur eut tiré vengeance des ennemis. Le soleil resta au milieu du ciel, et il ne s'avança pas du côté de l'occident, durant le cours de toute une journée.

14 Et il n'y eut jamais, avant ou après, pareil jour où le Seigneur écoutât ainsi un homme, parce que le Seigneur combattait avec Israël.

16 Cependant, les cinq rois s'étaient échappés; ils s'étaient cachés dans la caverne de Macéda.
and to flee five [the] king [the] these and to hide in/on/with cave in/on/with Makkedah
17 Et des gens en informèrent Josué, disant: On a trouvé les cinq rois cachés dans la caverne qui est en Macéda.

18 Et Josué dit: Roulez des pierres à l'entrée de la caverne, et placez des hommes pour la garder.

19 Pour vous, ne cessez pas de poursuivre vos ennemis; serrez de près leur arrière-garde, et ne souffrez pas qu'ils entrent dans leurs villes, car le Seigneur Dieu les a livrés à nos mains.

20 Lorsque Josué et les fils d'Israël eurent achevé cet immense carnage, ils s'arrêtèrent enfin, et ceux qui avaient pu fuir se réfugièrent dans leurs places fortifiées.

21 De son côté, tout le peuple d'Israël retourna sain et sauf en Macéda, et rejoignit Josué; pas un des fils d'Israël ne souffla mot.

22 Alors, Josué dit: Ouvrez la caverne, faites-en sortir les cinq rois, et me les amenez.

23 Et l'on amena de la caverne les cinq rois: le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jérimuth, le roi de Lachis et le roi d'Odollam.

24 Lorsqu'on les eut amenés devant Josué, il convoqua tout Israël, et il dit aux chefs des combattants, à ceux qui marchaient auprès de lui: Avancez, et mettez-leur le pied sur le cou. Et ils s'avancèrent, et ils mirent le pied sur le cou des cinq rois.

25 Et Josué dit aux siens: N'ayez ni crainte ni faiblesse; soyez forts, agissez en hommes, car le Seigneur traitera de même tous les ennemis que vous aurez à combattre.

26 Puis, Josué tua les rois; il les suspendit à cinq croix, et ils y restèrent jusqu'au soir.

30 Et le Seigneur la livra aux mains d'Israël; ils la prirent, et prirent son roi; ils passèrent au fil de l'épée tout ce qui avait souffle de vie; nul n'y fut épargné, nul ne s'en échappa, et ils traitèrent le roi de Lebna comme ils avaient traité le roi de Jéricho.

32 Et le Seigneur livra Lachis aux mains d'Israël; ils la prirent le second jour; ils la passèrent au fil de l'épée, et ils la détruisirent comme ils avaient détruit Lebna.

33 Alors, Elam, roi de Gazer, s'avança au secours de Lachis; mais Josué la passa, ainsi que tout son peuple, au fil de l'épée, au point de ne pas laisser un seul survivant ni un seul fuyard.

34 Après cela, Josué, et avec lui tout Israël, partirent de Lachis pour Odollam, qu'ils investirent et assiégèrent.

35 Et le Seigneur la livra aux mains d'Israël; il la prit ce jour-là même, et il passa au fil de l'épée tout ce qui avait souffle de vie, comme il avait fait à Lachis.

37 Ils y passèrent au fil de l'épée tout ce qui avait souffle de vie; nul ne fut épargné; comme à Odollam, ils détruisirent la ville et tout ce qu'elle renfermait.

39 Ils la prirent ainsi que son roi et ses bourgades; ils la passèrent au fil de l'épée; ils détruisirent la ville et tout ce qui en elle avait souffle de vie; ils n'y laissèrent pas un seul survivant; ils la traitèrent, elle et son roi, comme ils avaient traité Hébron et le roi d'Hébron.

40 Et Josué frappa toute la contrée montagneuse, et Nageb, et le plat pays, et Asedoth, et leurs rois; il n'y laissa pas un être vivant, il extermina tout ce qui avait souffle de vie, comme le lui avait prescrit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël.

41 Depuis Cadès-Barné jusqu'à Gaza, et Gosom tout entière jusqu'à Gabaon,
and to smite them Joshua from Kadesh-barnea Kadesh-barnea and till Gaza and [obj] all land: country/planet Goshen and till Gibeon
42 Josué dévasta de fond en comble toute la terre, et il fit périr ses rois, parce que le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël combattait avec son peuple.
