Job 9
1 Job reprenant dit:
Then Job answered and said,
2 En vérité je sais qu'il en est ainsi. Comment un mortel serait-il juste aux yeux du Seigneur?
I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?
3 Car si des hommes veulent aller avec Dieu en justice, il ne s'y prêtera pas; il ne voudra pas être contredit sur un seul point entre mille.
For if he would enter into judgment with him, [God] would not listen to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
4 Lui seul est sage en ses pensées; il est fort, il est grand; qui donc s'est assez endurci pour lui résister?
For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured?
5 Il lutte contre les montagnes et elles l'ignorent; il les bouleverse dans son courroux.
Who wears out the mountains, and [men] know it not: who overturns them in anger.
6 Il ébranle dans ses fondements la terre que recouvre le ciel, et les colonnes qui la soutiennent sont chancelantes.
Who shakes the [earth] under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter.
7 Il parle au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève pas; il appose son scel sur les astres.
Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars.
8 C'est lui seul qui a tendu les cieux et qui marche sur la mer comme sur un sol affermi.
Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
9 Il a créé les Pléïades, et l'étoile du soir, et Arcture, et les constellations du Midi.
Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south.
10 Il a fait une multitude innombrable de merveilles glorieuses et incompréhensibles.
Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.
11 S'il a passé au-dessus de moi, je ne l'ai point vu; s'il a marché à mes côtés, je n'en ai rien su.
If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known [it].
12 Se détourne-t-il, qui le ramènera? qui osera lui dire: Que faites-vous?
If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What have you done?
13 Seul il a dompté toute fureur, il a fait plier les monstres marins sous le ciel.
For [if] he has turned away [his] anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
14 S'il m'écoutait, s'il jugeait mes arguments!
Oh then that he would listen to me, or judge my cause.
15 Quand même je serais juste, il ne m'écouterait pas; je n'obtiendrais pas de lui un arrêt.
For though I be righteous, he will not listen to me: I will entreat his judgment.
16 Et si je ne l'avais invoqué et qu'il ne m'exauçât point, je ne pourrais croire qu'il eût entendu ma voix.
And if I should call and he should not listen, I can’t believe that he has listened to my voice.
17 Je crains qu'il ne me broie au moyen d'un tourbillon, car il amortit les ravages de mes plaies nombreuses.
Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made by bruises many without cause.
18 Il ne me laisse point reprendre haleine, après m'avoir rempli d'amertume,
For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness.
19 Et il prévaut par la force. Qui donc résisterait à la condamnation qu'il aurait prononcée?
For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgment?
20 Juste, ma bouche se trouvera dire des impiétés; irréprochable, je passerai pour criminel.
For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse.
21 Car, si j'ai péché, c'est dans l'ignorance de mon âme, et néanmoins la vie m'est ôtée.
For even if I have sinned, I know it not [in] my soul: but my life is taken away.
22 Aussi j'ai dit: La colère détruit le riche et le grand.
Therefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.
23 La mort qui les frappe soudain met à nu leur faiblesse; mais les justes sont tournés en dérision,
For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.
24 Ils sont livrés aux mains des pervers, et le Seigneur a voilé le front des juges. Et si ce n'est pas lui qui est-ce donc?
For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]: he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]: but if it be not he, who is it?
25 Ma vie est plus rapide qu'un courrier; on ne s'est point placé sur son passage et on ne l'a pas vue.
But my life is swifter than a post: [my days] have fled away, and they knew it not.
26 Les navires laissent-ils une trace, ou l'aigle qui vole et cherche sa proie?
Or again, is there a trace of [their] path [left] by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks [its] prey?
27 Si je me dis: Cesse donc de parler; borne-toi à courber la tête et à gémir;
And if I should say, I will forget to speak, I will bow down my face and groan;
28 Je tremble de tous mes membres, car je sais que vous ne me jugez point innocent.
I quake in all my limbs, for I know that you will not leave me alone [as] innocent.
29 Ai-je donc commis quelque impiété? Mais pourquoi ne suis-je point mort?
But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?
30 Lors même que je me serais lavé avec de la neige, et que des mains pures m'auraient purifié,
For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands,
31 Vous m'avez assez plongé dans la fange pour que ma robe m'ait souillé.
you had thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me.
32 Car vous n'êtes point comme moi un homme avec qui je puisse contester et comparaître en justice.
For you are not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgment.
33 Que n'existe-t-il pour nous un médiateur, qui écoute et qui prononce entre vous et moi?
Would that [he] our mediator were [present], and a reprover, and one who should hear [the cause] between both.
34 Détournez de moi votre verge; que l'effroi qu'elle m'inspire ne me trouble plus.
Let him remove [his] rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 Si je cesse de craindre je parlerai, car je ne le peux en l'état où je suis.
so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious [of guilt].
