Job 5
1 Vois donc s'il est quelqu'un que tu puisses invoquer et qui t'écoute; peut-être l'un des saints anges t'apparaîtra.
Call, I pray thee—is there one to answer thee? Or, to which of the holy ones, wilt thou turn?
2 Songe que la colère détruit l'insensé; l'envie tue celui qui s'égare.
For, to the foolish man, death is caused by vexation, and, the simple one, is slain by jealousy.
3 J'ai cependant vu des insensés prendre racine; mais leurs richesses ont été aussitôt dévorées.
I, have seen the foolish taking root, and then hath his home decayed, in a moment:
4 Qu'il n'y ait point de salut pour leurs enfants; que l'on forme autour d'eux des danses railleuses, devant la porte des petits; que nul ne les délivre.
His children are far removed from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is none to deliver:
5 Que les justes mangent ce qu'ils ont amassé; qu'eux-mêmes ne puissent sortir de leur infortune et que leur force soit épuisée.
Whose harvest, the hungry, eateth up, and, even out of thorn hedges, he taketh it, and the snare gapeth for their substance.
6 Ce n'est point de la terre que naît le mal; ce n'est point dans les montagnes que germent les peines.
For sorrow, cometh not forth out of the dust, —nor, out of the ground, sprouteth trouble.
7 Mais l'homme est né pour se rendre malheureux comme les petits des vautours pour voler sur les hautes cimes.
Though, man, to trouble, were born, as, sparks, on high, do soar,
8 Pour moi, je prierai le Seigneur, j'invoquerai le Seigneur maître de toutes choses,
Yet indeed, I, would seek unto El, and, unto Elohim, would I set forth any cause: —
9 Qui fait des merveilles innombrables et incompréhensibles, et des actions glorieuses et grandes,
Who doeth great things, beyond all search, —Wondrous things, till they cannot be recounted;
10 Qui donne à la terre de la pluie et lui envoie l'eau du ciel,
Who giveth rain, upon the face of the earth, and sendeth forth waters, over the face of the open fields;
11 Qui élève les humbles et ranime ceux qui se croyaient perdus,
Setting the lowly on high, and, mourners, are uplifted to safety;
12 Qui dissipe les desseins des trompeurs et empêche leurs mains de les exécuter,
Who doth frustrate the schemes of the crafty, that their hands cannot achieve abiding success;
13 Qui confond la prudence des sages et bouleverse les artifices des gens dissimulés.
Who captureth the wise in their own craftiness, yea the headlong counsel of the crooked:
14 Il les enveloppe en plein jour de ténèbres; il les fait marcher à tâtons, à midi comme à minuit.
By day, they encounter darkness, and, as though it were night, they grope at high noon.
15 Puissent-ils périr dans les batailles; puisse le faible être délivré de la main des grands.
But he saveth from the sword, out of their mouth, and, out of the hand of the strong, the needy.
16 Puisse le petit conserver de l'espérance; puisse le Seigneur fermer la bouche de l'injuste.
Thus to the poor hath come hope, and, perversity, hath shut her mouth.
17 Heureux l'homme qu'a châtié le Seigneur; qu'il se garde de rejeter de tels avertissements.
Lo! how happy is the man whom God correcteth! Therefore, the chastening of the Almighty, do not thou refuse;
18 Car le Seigneur fait souffrir et il répare: il frappe et ses mains guérissent.
For, he, woundeth that he may bind up, He smiteth through, that, his own hands, may heal.
19 Six fois il te tirera de peine; la septième fois, le mal ne t'atteindra plus.
In six troubles, he will rescue thee, and, in seven, there shall smite thee no misfortune:
20 Pendant la famine, il te préservera de la mort; à la guerre il détournera de toi le fer ennemi.
In famine, he will ransom thee from death, and in battle from the power of the sword;
21 Il te mettra à l'abri des flagellations de la langue et tu n'auras rien à craindre des fléaux qui surviendront.
During the scourge of the tongue, shalt thou be hid, neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh;
22 Tu te riras des injustes et des déréglés; tu braveras les bêtes fauves.
At destruction and at hunger, shalt thou laugh, and, of the wild beast of the earth, be not thou afraid;
23 Les animaux les plus farouches te laisseront en paix.
For, with the stones of the field, shall be thy covenant, and, the wild beast of the field, hath been made thy friend;
24 Tu sentiras d'où vient le calme de ta maison; et tes habitudes seront irréprochables.
And thou shalt know that, at peace, is thy tent, and shalt visit thy fold, and miss nothing;
25 Tu verras croître une florissante famille, aussi nombreuse que les herbes des champs.
And thou shalt know, that numerous is thy seed, and, thine offspring, like the young shoots of the field.
26 Et tu descendras à la tombe mûr comme le blé que l'on moissonne en la saison, ou comme le monceau que l'on a renfermé dans l'aire après l'avoir récolté.
Thou shalt come, yet robust, to the grave, as a stack of sheaves mounteth up in its season.
27 Telles sont les pensées que j'ai cherchées et conçues; rentre en toi-même et vois ce que tu as fait.
Lo! as for this, we have searched it out—so, it is, Hear it, and know, thou, for thyself.
