Job 4
1 Or, Eliphaz le Thémanite répondit:
Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:
2 Est-ce que tu parles pour la première fois depuis que tu souffres? Qui supportera la violence de tes discours?
If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?
3 Car si tu as consolé beaucoup d'affligés, si tu as raffermi des mains défaillantes,
Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:
4 Si par tes paroles, tu as ranimé des faibles, si tu as donné du courage à ceux dont les genoux fléchissaient,
Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:
5 Maintenant que le mal t'a visité et t'a saisi, d'où vient que tu en es tout accablé?
But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.
6 Ta terreur n'est-elle pas insensée, ton angoisse montre-t-elle autre chose que la méchanceté de tes voies?
Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?
7 Recueille tes souvenirs; qui donc étant resté pur a péri? Quel homme sincère a été détruit radicalement?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?
8 Comme ceux qui labouraient et ensemençaient des contrées vaines et que j'ai vu moissonner pour eux des douleurs?
On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,
9 Ceux-là seront anéantis par l'ordre de Dieu; ils seront effacés par le souffle de sa colère.
Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.
10 Ainsi la force du lion, les rugissements de la lionne, l'audace des dragons s'éteignent.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:
11 Ainsi le fourmilion meurt, faute d'un brin d'herbe, et les lionceaux quittant leur mère, se dispersent.
The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
12 S'il y a quelque chose de vrai dans tes paroles, il n'en est résulté aucun soulagement à tes maux. Et moi, dois-je négliger les avertissements extraordinaires qui, de la part du Seigneur, sont venus à mes oreilles?
Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.
13 Ecoute: comme l'effroi se répandait parmi les hommes pendant l'horreur et les bruits sinistres de la nuit,
In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,
14 Un tremblement, un frisson me saisirent, et mes os s'entrechoquèrent.
Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:
15 Et un esprit se posa sur mon visage, et mes cheveux et mes chairs en frémirent.
And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Je me levai et ne vis rien; je reconnus qu'il n'y avait aucune forme devant mes yeux; et je sentis un souffle et j'entendis une voix, et elle disait:
There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:
17 Quoi donc! Est-ce qu'un mortel sera pur devant le Seigneur? Est-ce qu'un homme sera irréprochable en ses œuvres,
Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18 Puisque Dieu ne peut se fier à ses serviteurs et qu'il découvre des défauts à ses anges?
Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:
19 Il écrase comme des vermisseaux ceux qui habitent des maisons de boue, de cette boue d'où nous avons été tirés.
How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?
20 L'aurore se lève sur eux et le soir ils ne sont plus; pour n'avoir pu s'aider eux-mêmes, ils ont péri.
From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.
21 Car Dieu d'un souffle les a desséchés, et ils sont morts parce qu'ils manquaient de sagesse.
And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
