Job 39
1 Sais-tu le temps où la gazelle des rochers met bas? As-tu observé les biches dans les douleurs de l'enfantement?
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats bring forth among the rocks, or hast thou observed the hinds when they fawn?
2 As-tu compté les mois de leur portée? les as-tu délivrées dans les maux?
Hast thou numbered the months of their conceiving, or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
3 Est-ce grâce à toi qu'elles nourrissent leurs petits sans crainte? as-tu effacé toutes leurs douleurs?
They bow themselves to bring forth young, and they cast them, and send forth roarings.
4 Leurs petits les abandonneront; ils multiplieront leur espèce; ils s'éloigneront et ne reviendront jamais.
Their young are weaned and go to feed: they go forth, and return not to them.
5 De qui l'âne sauvage tient-il sa liberté? Qui a détaché ses liens?
Who hath sent out the wild ass free, and who hath loosed his bonds?
6 J'ai préparé sa nourriture dans le désert, et sa demeure dans la contrée saumâtre et stérile.
To whom I have given a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the barren land.
7 Il se raille de la foule qui peuple les cités; il n'entend jamais les reproches du collecteur.
He scorneth the multitude of the city, he heareth not the cry of the driver.
8 Il met tous ses soins à examiner les pâturages des montagnes, et il vit de toutes sortes d'herbes.
He looketh round about the mountains of his pasture, and seeketh for every green thing.
9 La licorne se prêtera-t-elle à te servir; couchera-t-elle jamais en ton étable?
Shall the rhinoceros be willing to serve thee, or will he stay at thy crib?
10 Pourras-tu l'attacher au joug et lui faire creuser les sillons de tes champs?
Canst thou bind the rhinoceros with thy thong to plough, or will he break the clods of the valleys after thee?
11 Te fieras-tu à elle à cause de sa force, et la chargeras-tu de tes travaux?
Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength, and leave thy labours to him?
12 Croiras-tu qu'elle te rende tes semailles; les fera-t-elle rentrer en ton aire?
Wilt thou trust him that he will render thee the seed, and gather it into thy barnfloor?
13 La plume naissante de l'autruche ramassera-t-elle du limon comme celle du canard?
The wing of the ostrich is like the wings of the heron, and of the hawk.
14 Elle pond dans le sable, et ne couve pas ses œufs autrement qu'en les couvrant d'une motte de terre
When she leaveth her eggs on the earth, thou perhaps wilt warm them in the dust.
15 Elle oublie que le passant les dispersera et que les bêtes fauves les fouleront aux pieds.
She forgetteth that the foot may tread upon them, or that the beasts of the field may break them.
16 Elle traite durement ses petits comme s'ils ne lui appartenaient pas; elle a souffert vainement sans regret ni crainte,
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, she hath laboured in vain, no fear constraining her.
17 Parce que Dieu chez elle a fait taire la sagesse, et ne lui a pas accordé sa part d'intelligence.
For God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he given her understanding.
18 A l'occasion elle prendra son essor; elle raillera le cheval et le cavalier.
When time shall be, she setteth up her wings on high: she scorneth the horse and his rider.
19 Est-ce toi qui as donné au cheval sa vigueur; est-ce par toi que sa crinière effraye
Wilt thou give strength to the horse, or clothe his neck with neighing?
20 L'as-tu armé de ses moyens de défense; as-tu fait naître l'audace en son sein?
Wilt thou lift him up like the locusts? the glory of his nostrils is terror.
21 Il imprime son sabot dans le sol et s'enorgueillit; il s'élance en sa force à travers la campagne.
He breaketh up the earth with his hoof, he pranceth boldly, he goeth forward to meet armed men.
22 La lutte avec un roi le réjouit; il ne se détourne pas du fer.
He despiseth fear, he turneth not his back to the sword,
23 L'arc et l'épée se glorifient s'ils l'atteignent.
Above him shall the quiver rattle, the spear and shield shall glitter.
24 En son courroux il détruirait la terre, et il n'est docile qu'au signal de la trompette.
Chasing and raging he swalloweth the ground, neither doth he make account when the noise of the trumpet soundeth.
25 S'il l'entend, il dit: Bien; il flaire de loin la bataille, et il le fait voir par ses courbettes et ses hennissements.
When he heareth the trumpet he saith: Ha, ha: he smelleth the battle afar off, the encouraging of the captains, and the shouting of the army.
26 Est-ce ta science qui a dressé l'épervier? Lui as-tu appris à déployer ses ailes, à se balancer immobile et à regarder le midi?
Doth the hawk wax feathered by thy wisdom, spreading her wings to the south?
27 Est-ce à ton commandement que l'aigle élève son vol, et que le vautour passe la nuit perché au-dessus de ses petits,
Will the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest in high places?
28 Sur la pointe d'une roche, au fond de sa retraite?
She abideth among the rocks, and dwelleth among cragged flints, and stony hills, where there is no access.
29 En s'y tenant il cherche sa pâture; ses yeux voient au loin.
From thence she looketh for the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
30 Il souille de sang sa couvée, et, partout où il y a des cadavres, il les découvre.
Her young ones shall suck up blood: and wheresoever the carcass shall be, she is immediately there.
