Job 38
1 Aussitôt qu'Elihou eut fini son discours, le Seigneur dit à Job à travers un nuage et un tourbillon:
Then did the Lord address Job out of the storm-wind, and said,
2 Quel est celui qui me cache ses desseins? Il renferme des pensées en son cœur; croit-il qu'elles m'échapperont?
Who is this that casteth darkness [on my] counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Ceins-toi les reins comme un homme; je vais te questionner: réponds-moi.
Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
4 Où étais-tu quand j'ai créé la terre? Déclare-le-moi si tu en as connaissance.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding [of it].
5 Qui en a réglé les dimensions; le sais-tu? Qui a promené sur elle le cordeau pour en prendre la mesure?
Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuring-line over her?
6 Comment en a-t-on attaché les anneaux? Qui a posé sur elle la pierre angulaire?
Upon what are her foundation-pillars placed at rest? or who laid her corner-stone:
7 Lorsque les astres ont paru, tous mes anges à haute voix m'ont applaudi.
When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
8 J'ai renfermé la mer, j'ai placé des portes pour que, dans sa fureur, elle ne pût s'élancer hors des entrailles qui la contiennent.
And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
9 Pour langes, je lui ai donné les brouillards, et pour vêtement les nuées.
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddling-cloth,
10 J'ai fixé ses limites, je l'ai entourée de battants et de verrous.
And when I decreed for it my law, and set [for it] bars and doors,
11 Je lui ai dit: Tu iras jusque-là, tu n'iras pas plus loin; tes vagues se briseront sur toi-même.
And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed [thy strength] in the pride of thy waves?
12 Est-ce de ton temps que j'ai disposé la lueur de l'aurore? et que l'étoile du matin a su qu'elle avait pour devoir
Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morning-dawn its place:
13 De secouer la terre, en la tenant par les deux ailes, et d'en faire tomber les impies?
That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
14 Est-ce toi qui, ayant pris de l'argile, as formé un être vivant et l'as mis sur la terre, doué de parole?
She is changed as the sealing-clay: and [all things] stand as though newly clad.
15 As-tu ôté aux méchants la lumière, as-tu broyé les bras des orgueilleux?
And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the high-raised arm is broken.
16 Es-tu descendu jusqu'au sources de la mer? As-tu marché dans les profondeurs de l'abîme?
Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
17 Les portes de la mort s'ouvrent-elles sans t'effrayer? Peux-tu soutenir sans épouvante les regards des gardiens de l'enfer? (questioned)
Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
18 La vaste étendue que le ciel recouvre ne t'a-t-elle pas averti? Dis-le- moi, que penses-tu de sa grandeur?
Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
19 Quelle est la contrée où la lumière passe la nuit? Quel est le lieu où résident les ténèbres?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light dwelleth? and the darkness—where is its place,
20 Pourrais-tu m'y conduire, en connais-tu le chemin?
That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
21 Ne sais-je point que si dès lors tu étais né, tes jours ont été bien nombreux?
Thou [surely] knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 As-tu visité les trésors de la neige? As-tu vu les trésors de la grêle?
Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
23 Les tiens-tu en réserve pour l'heure où se montreront tes ennemis, pour les jours de la guerre et des combats?
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
24 D'où viennent les frimas ou le vent du midi qui souffle sous le ciel?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light divideth itself, [where] the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Quelle puissance a préparé la chute des pluies violente et la voie des cataclysmes
Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning [that is followed by] thunders,
26 Qui fondent sur des contrées où il n'y a point d'hommes, sur des déserts où les mortels ne possèdent rien;
To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth [is found];
27 Qui fécondent des champs inhabités et leur font produire une herbe luxuriante?
To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
28 Quel est le père de la pluie? Qui a produit les gouttes de la rosée?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 De quel sein est sortie la glace, d'où est né le givre du ciel
Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven—who giveth birth to it?
30 Qui descend comme l'eau coule? Quel est celui qui frappe de terreur les impies?
[When] like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
31 Est-ce toi qui as enchaîné les pléiades et ouvert la clôture qui retenait Orion?
Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
32 Feras-tu voir Mazuroth en son temps, et conduiras-tu sur sa chevelure l'étoile du soir elle-même?
Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
33 Connais-tu les révolutions du ciel et ce qui arrive en même temps sur la terre?
Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
34 Appelles-tu de la voix le nuage, t'obéit-il, en s'ébranlant verse-t-il des torrents d'eau?
Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Convoques-tu les éclairs? Viennent-ils en disant: Qu'y a-t-il?
Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
36 Qui donc a enseigné aux femmes l'art de faire des tissus; qui les a douées de l'adresse d'y tracer des ornements divers?
Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
37 Qui sait, en sa sagesse, dompter les nuages, et qui a courbé le ciel vers la terre?
Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
38 Il a été malléable comme de la terre en poudre, et je l'ai consolidé comme un bloc de pierre.
When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
39 Chasseras-tu pour donner aux lions leur nourriture? Rempliras-tu l'âme des serpents?
Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
40 Ils craignent dans leurs repaires, et ils se tiennent en embuscade au fond des forêts.
When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
41 Qui a préparé au corbeau sa pâture? car ses petits, en secouant leurs ailes, ont crié au Seigneur pour demander à manger.
Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
