Job 34

1 Et Elihou, continuant dit:

And Elihu commenced, and said,

2 Ecoutez-moi, sages et savants; prêtez-moi une oreille attentive,

Hear, O ye wise men, my words; and ye that have knowledge, give ear unto me.

3 Car l'oreille juge les paroles, comme le gosier goûte les aliments.

For the ear proveth words, as the palate tasteth the food.

4 Servons-nous en pour décider; discernons entre elles ce qui est bon.

Let us choose for ourselves what is just: let us acknowledge between ourselves what is good.

5 Job a dit: Je suis juste, le Seigneur m'a exclu du jugement;

For Job hath said, “I am righteous; and God hath taken away justice from me.

6 Il m'a rendu suspect par son arrêt; le trait a été violent, sans que j'eusse commis d'iniquité.

Should I lie concerning the justice due me? incurable is [my wound from] the arrow I bear in me without any transgression.”

7 Quel est l'homme qu'autant que Job on ait abreuvé de railleries, comme on abreuve d'eau?

What man is there like Job, who drinketh scorning like water,

8 Et je n'ai point péché, je n'ai rien fait contre Dieu; je n'ai rien de commun avec les méchants; je n'ai point marché avec les impies.

And is on the road to keep company with the wrong-doers, and to walk with men of wickedness?

9 Ne tiens pas ce langage, car ce qui échappe à la surveillance de l'homme n'échappe pas à celle de Dieu;

For he hath said, “It profiteth a man nothing when he acteth according to the pleasure of God.”

10 C'est pourquoi, vous qui m'êtes unis par le cœur, soyez attentifs; puissé-je n'être point impie devant le Seigneur, et satisfaire à ce qui est juste devant le Tout-Puissant.

Therefore ye men of sense hearken unto me: far is it from God to practise wickedness; and from the Almighty to do wrong!

11 Qu'il rétribue chacun selon ses œuvres, et il saura bien trouver un homme sur sa voie.

For the work of a son of earth doth he recompense unto him, and according to the path of man doth he permit things to occur to him.

12 Penses-tu Job, que le Seigneur fasse des choses vaines? Le Tout-Puissant fausse-t-il la justice, lui qui a créé la terre?

Yea, surely God will not condemn unjustly, nor will the Almighty pervert justice.

13 Qui donc a fait l'étendue que le ciel recouvre et tout ce qui l'habite?

Who hath given him a charge concerning the earth? or who hath intrusted [him] the whole world?

14 S'il lui plaisait de s'abstenir, de retenir son souffle,

If he were to set his heart upon man, he would gather unto himself his spirit and his breath:

15 Toute chair au même instant périrait; tout homme retournerait à la terre dont il a été formé.

All flesh would perish together, and the son of earth would return again unto dust.

16 S'il ne t'a pas averti, écoute ce que je vais te dire, que tes oreilles le recueillent.

If then thou wishest to understand, hear this: give ear to the sound of my words.

17 Considère toi-même celui qui hait les pervers, celui qui extermine les méchants, celui qui est éternellement juste.

Is it possible that he who hateth justice should govern? or wilt thou condemn the righteous mighty One?

18 Celui qui ne craint pas d'appeler un roi impie; ni de dire aux grands: vous êtes corrompus, vous vivez dans le péché.

[Is it fit] to say to a king, Thou art worthless? and to princes, Ye are wicked?

19 Celui qui n'a aucun égard pour le rang; qui ne sait point honorer la force ni lui rendre des respects.

Whereas he is one that showeth no favor to chieftains, and distinguisheth not the rich before the indigent; for all of them are the work of his hands.

20 A prier un homme qui pratique l'iniquité, qui méconnaît les pauvres, on n'obtiendra que des choses vaines.

In a moment will they die, and in the midst of the night; people are moved, and pass away: and the mighty will be removed without a human hand.

21 Mais Dieu voit les œuvres des mortels; rien de ce qu'ils font ne lui est caché.

For big eyes are upon the ways of man, and all his steps doth he see.

22 Il n'est point de lieu où les pervers puissent se soustraire à ses regards.

There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the evil-doers can hide themselves.

23 Il ne s'y prend pas à deux fois pour juger un homme.

For he need not direct [his attention] a long time upon man, that he should enter into judgment before God.

24 Le Seigneur surveille tout; il est l'auteur d'une multitude de merveilles incompréhensibles et glorieuses.

He breaketh down mighty men without [long] searching, and placeth others in their stead.

25 Il connaît les travaux des humains, sur eux il ramènera la nuit et ils seront humiliés.

For the reason that he knoweth their deeds: therefore he overturneth them in the night, and they are crushed.

26 Il a éteint les impies; il ne lui est point échappé

Among wicked men doth he strike them, in the place where [many] see them:

27 Qu'ils s'étaient écartés de la loi de Dieu, et qu'ils avaient méconnu ses préceptes.

Because they have departed from following him, and have not considered all his ways.

28 Ils avaient contraint les pauvres de l'invoquer, et il exaucera toujours les indigents.

Bringing before them the cry of the indigent, and the cry of the afflicted which he had to hear.

29 Seul il donne la paix, et qui donc fera condamner celui à qui il l'accorde? S'il cache son front, qui le verra? Il juge les nations comme les individus.

When he now granteth rest, who will condemn [him]! and when he hideth his face, who can behold him? whether it be against a nation, or against one man, it is the same:

30 Il place sur le trône un roi hypocrite, à cause des caprices du peuple.

That no hypocritical man may reign, that such shall not be a mare to the people.

31 Il en est qui disent au Tout-Puissant: Si j'ai pris, je ne retiendrai rien en gage.

For truly it is only fitting to say unto God, “I bear [cheerfully], I will not do any wrong;

32 Je ne puis voir par moi-même; faites-moi connaître si j'ai commis quelque iniquité, et je ne recommencerai pas.

What I cannot see myself, do thou truly teach me; if I have done what is unjust, I will do so no more.”

33 Est-il juste que vous m'en punissiez; ne deviez-vous pas la prévenir; n'est-ce pas vous qui choisissez et non moi? Ce que vous savez, déclarez-le.

Should he then according to thy view send a recompense, because thou hast rejected him? “Because thou must choose, and not I?” and what thou knowest, do speak.

34 S'il est vrai que des cœurs intelligents peuvent parler en ces termes, d'autre part c'est à un homme sage que je parle, et il m'écoute.

Men of sense will say unto me, and every wise man who heareth me,

35 Job n'a point raisonné en homme habile, ses discours ne montrent pas de savoir.

That Job hath not spoken with knowledge, and that his words are without intelligence.

36 O Job, réfléchis donc; ne réponds pas derechef à la manière des insensés.

Oh that Job may therefore be probed continually, in order to give answers against sinful men.

37 De peur que nous n'ajoutions pas à nos fautes; car il nous sera imputé à péché de nous étendre en longs discours devant le Seigneur.

For he addeth unto his sin transgression: among us he uttereth too many loud words, and multiplieth his speeches against God.
