Job 31

1 J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, disant: Je ne regarderai plus une vierge.

I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.

2 Car quelle est la part que d'en haut m'a réservée le Seigneur; quel héritage dois-je attendre du Tout-Puissant qui règne au plus haut des cieux?

Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?

3 Malheur, perdition à l'injuste, expulsion pour celui qui fait le mal.

Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.

4 Le Seigneur ne me tiendra-t-il pas compte de mes voies, ni de la manière dont j'ai marché?

Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?

5 Si j'avais été le compagnon des railleurs; si j'avais porté mes pas du côté de la fraude!

But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:

6 Mais je me suis maintenu sous le joug de la justice, et le Seigneur connaît mon innocence.

(for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence: )

7 Si mon pied s'est écarté du droit chemin, si mon cœur a été égayé par mes yeux, si mes mains ont touché des présents,

if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;

8 Que d'autres consomment ce que j'ai semé, que sur la terre je devienne sans racines.

then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.

9 Si mon cœur a convoité la femme d'autrui, si j'ai franchi ses portes,

If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;

10 Que ma femme plaise à un autre homme; que mes enfants soient humiliés.

then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.

11 Rien ne peut apaiser la colère de Dieu contre celui qui souille la femme de son prochain.

For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, [in the case] of defiling [another] man's wife.

12 Le feu s'attaquera à toute sa personne et dévorera tout ce qui sera issu de lui.

For it is a fire burning on every side, and whoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.

13 Si j'avais faussé le jugement que je rendais sur mon serviteur et ma servante, lorsqu'ils recouraient à ma justice,

And if too I despised the judgement of my servant or [my] handmaid, when they pleaded with me;

14 Que ferais-je quand à mon tour le Seigneur me jugera? Qu'aurais-je à lui répondre, s'il m'avait surpris en quelque faute?

what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?

15 Ceux que j'avais à juger n'avaient-ils pas été comme moi, conçus en des entrailles? n'était-ce pas comme si les mêmes flancs nous avaient portés?

Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yes, we were formed in the same womb.

16 Aussi les pauvres ont-ils toujours trouvé chez moi ce qui leur manquait; et je n'ai point fait verser de larmes à l'œil de la veuve.

But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.

17 Si j'ai mangé seul ma bouchée, si je n'en ai point fait part à l'orphelin;

And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;

18 Si dès ma jeunesse, à peine sorti du ventre de ma mère, je n'ai eu de lui des soins paternels;

(for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother's womb.)

19 Si j'ai méprisé l'homme nu et abandonné; si je ne l'ai point vêtu;

And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;

20 Si les indigents ne m'ont point béni; si leurs épaules n'ont pas été réchauffées par les toisons de mes agneaux;

and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

21 Si j'ai levé la main sur le pupille; si je n'ai point multiplié mes secours avec confiance;

if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:

22 Que mon épaule se déboîte, que mon bras soit broyé au-dessous du coude.

let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.

23 En vérité la crainte du Seigneur m'a saisi; je ne puis supporter ce qu'il m'envoie.

For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I can’t bear up by reason of his burden.

24 Si j'avais amoncelé de l'or, si j'avais estimé surtout les pierres précieuses;

If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;

25 Si j'avais mis ma joie en de grandes richesses; si ma main s'était posée sur des trésors innombrables;

and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:

26 Je me serais dit: N'ai-je point vu le soleil dans tout son éclat s'éclipser, et la lune au ciel périr? Et rien n'est au-dessus d'eux.

(do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not [power to continue]: )

27 Et si mon cœur en secret s'est laissé séduire; et si j'ai baisé ma main en la portant à ma bouche,

and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:

28 Que ces fautes me soient gravement imputées; car alors j'ai menti au Seigneur Très-Haut.

let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.

29 Et si je me suis réjoui de la chute de mes ennemis, et si dans mon âme j'ai dit: Bien!

And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!

30 Puisse mon oreille ouïr la malédiction qui sera portée contre moi; puissé-je être signalé à tout le peuple comme un méchant.

let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword amongst my people in my affliction.

31 Si je n'ai pas été bon pour mes servantes, si elles ont dit de moi: Qui nous permettra de nous rassasier de sa chair?

And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:

32 Si j'ai laissé l'étranger passer la nuit en plein air, et si ma porte ne s'est pas ouverte à tout venant.

for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came: )

33 Si ayant failli involontairement, j'ai caché mes péchés;

or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;

34 Retenu par la honte de les avouer devant la multitude; si j'ai souffert que le pauvre sortît de ma maison l'estomac vide;

(for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them: ) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:

35 Qui me donnera quelqu'un qui m'écoute? Si je n'ai point eu crainte de la main du Seigneur; le titre que j'avais contre autrui,

(Oh that I had a hearer, ) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,

36 Que j'avais lu les épaules ceintes d'une couronne,

I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.

37 Si je ne l'ai point remis, après l'avoir déchiré, sans rien exiger du débiteur;

And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:

38 Si jamais la terre a gémi contre moi, si ses sillons ont pleuré tous ensemble,

If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;

39 Si j'ai consommé ses fruits seul et sans les payer; si en les empruntant j'ai affligé l'âme de son possesseur,

and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking [anything] from [him]:

40 Que les champs, au lieu de froment, ne produisent pour moi que des orties; et au lieu d'orge que des ronces. Et Job cessa de parler.

then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
