Job 29
1 Et Job, ajoutant à ce qui précède, dit:
Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said:
2 Qui me rendra les jours d'autrefois, le temps où Dieu prenait de soin de me garder?
Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?
3 Alors sa lampe brillait sur ma tête: alors avec sa lumière je ne craignais pas de marcher dans les ténèbres.
At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.
4 Alors je foulais de mes pieds la voie; alors Dieu veillait sur ma maison.
I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.
5 Alors je m'asseyais à l'ombre de mes arbres, et mes enfants étaient autour de moi.
At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.
6 Alors mes sentiers ruisselaient de beurre et mes collines de lait.
Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.
7 Alors j'entrais dès l'aurore en la ville, et un siège m'était réservé sur les places.
When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.
8 Les jeunes gens à mon aspect se voilaient; et les anciens restaient debout.
The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.
9 Les forts cessaient de parler; ils se mettaient un doigt sur la bouche.
The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.
10 Attentifs à mes discours, ils me déclaraient heureux, après quoi leur langue était collée à leur gosier.
The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.
11 L'oreille m'avait ouï et l'on me proclamait heureux; l'œil m'avait vu et l'on s'inclinait.
The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.
12 Car j'avais délivré le pauvre des mains du riche; j'avais protégé l'orphelin qui manquait d'appui.
This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.
13 La bénédiction de l'abandonné s'adressait à moi; la bouche de la veuve aussi me bénissait.
The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.
14 Je m'étais revêtu de justice; je m'étais enveloppé d'équité comme d'un manteau double.
I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.
15 J'étais l'œil de l'aveugle et le pied du boiteux.
I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.
16 J'étais le père des faibles; j'étudiais des causes que je ne connaissais pas.
I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.
17 Aussi j'ai brisé les mâchoires de l'injuste; j'ai arraché de ses dents la proie qu'il avait saisie.
I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.
18 Et j'ai dit: Mon âge se prolongera comme celui du palmier; ma vie sera de longue durée.
And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.
19 La racine se montrera hors de l'eau, et la rosée passera la nuit dans ma moisson.
My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.
20 Ma gloire est pour moi chose vaine, et elle marche mon arc à la main.
My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”
21 A peine m'avait-on entendu que l'on s'attachait à moi; on gardait le silence en recueillant mes conseils.
Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.
22 Nul n'ajoutait à mes discours, et les hommes étaient pleins de joie que je leur avais parlé.
To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.
23 Comme la terre altérée reçoit la pluie, de même ils recevaient mes paroles.
They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.
24 Lorsque je riais avec eux, ils n'y pouvaient croire, et l'éclat de mon visage n'en était pas amoindri.
If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.
25 Je leur avais indiqué la voie, ils m'avaient institué leur chef, et ma demeure semblait celle d'un roi entouré de gardes ou d'un consolateur des affligés.
If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to those who mourned.
