Genèse 44
1 Joseph donna ses ordres à l'intendant de sa maison, disant: Fais remplir de vivres les sacs de ces hommes, autant qu'ils en pourront emporter, et que l'on place l'argent de chacun à l'entrée de son sac.
Forsothe Joseph comaundid the dispendere of his hous, and seide, Fille thou her sackis with wheete, as myche as tho moun take, and putte thou the money of ech in the hiynesse of the sak;
2 Mets aussi ma coupe dans le sac du plus jeune, avec le prix de son blé. Et tout ce que Joseph avait commandé fut fait comme il avait dit.
forsothe put thou in the mouth of the sak of the yongere my silueren cuppe, and the prijs of wheete which he yaf; and it was doon so.
3 Dès que le jour parut, les hommes furent congédiés avec leurs ânes.
And whanne the morewtid roos, thei weren delyuered with her assis.
4 Comme ils étaient hors de la ville et pas encore très loin, Joseph dit à l'intendant de sa maison: Lève-toi, cours à la poursuite de ces hommes, arrête-les, et dis-leur: Pourquoi rendez-vous le mal pour le bien? Pourquoi m'avez-vous dérobé la coupe d'argent?
And now thei hadden go out of the citee, and hadden go forth a litil; thanne Joseph seide, whanne the dispendere of his hous was clepid, Rise thou, pursue the men, and seye thou whanne thei ben takun, Whi han ye yolde yuel for good?
5 N'est-ce pas celle en laquelle boit mon seigneur? Il s'en sert pour deviner en prenant les augures; c'est bien mal ce que vous avez fait.
The cuppe, which ye han stole, is thilk in which my lord drynkith, and in which he is wont to dyuyne; ye han do a ful wickid thing.
6 Celui-ci les rejoignit, et il leur répéta ces paroles.
He dide as Joseph comaundid, and whanne thei weren takun, he spak bi ordre.
7 Ils répondirent: Pourquoi notre seigneur parle-t-il ainsi? Dieu préserve tes serviteurs d'avoir fait ce que tu dis,
Whiche answeriden, Whi spekith oure lord so, that thi seruauntis han do so greet trespas?
8 Si nous t'avons rapporté, de la terre de Chanaan, l'argent retrouvé dans nos sacs, comment aurions-nous dérobé or ou argent, dans la maison de ton seigneur?
We brouyten ayen to thee fro the lond of Chanaan the monei which we founden in the hiynesse of sackis, and hou is it suynge that we han stole fro `the hows of thi lord gold ether siluer?
9 Celui de tes serviteurs sur qui tu trouveras la coupe, qu'il soit mis à mort, et que tous nous devenions esclaves de notre seigneur.
At whom euere of thi seruauntis this that thou sekist is foundun, die he, and we schulen be seruauntis of my lord.
10 Soit, reprit-il; il sera fait comme vous dites: mais celui-là seulement sur qui je trouverai la coupe sera mon esclave; les autres seront absous.
Which seide to hem, Be it doon bi youre sentence; at whom it is foundun, be he my seruaunt; forsothe ye schulen be gilteles.
11 Ils se hâtèrent; chacun descendit son sac, et l'ouvrit.
And so thei diden doun hastili the sackis on erthe, and alle openyden tho whiche he souyte;
12 Puis l'homme fouilla, en commençant par l'aîné jusqu'à ce qu'il arrivât au plus jeune, et il trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.
and bigan at the more til to the leeste, and foond the cuppe in `the sak of Beniamyn.
13 Alors, ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements; chacun remit son sac sur son âne, et ils retournèrent à la ville.
And whanne thei hadden `to-rent her clothis, and hadden chargid eft the assis, thei turneden ayen in to the citee.
14 Juda entra, avec ses frères, vers Joseph, qui était encore où ils l'avaient déjà vu, et ils tombèrent devant lui la face contre terre.
And Judas entride `the firste with brithren to Joseph; for he hadde not go yit fro the place; and alle felden togidere on erthe bifore hym.
15 Joseph leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous fait une telle action? Ne saviez- vous point qu'un homme comme moi devine en prenant les augures?
To whiche he seide, Whi wolden ye do so? whether ye witen not, that noon is lijk me in the kunnyng of dyuinyng?
16 Juda repartit: Que répondrons-nous, qu'avons-nous à dire, et comment serons-nous justifiés? Dieu a découvert l'iniquité de tes serviteurs, nous serrons les esclaves de notre seigneur, nous et celui sur qui la coupe a été trouvée.
To whom Judas seide, What schulen we answere to my lord, ether what schulen we speke, ether moun iustli ayenseie? God hath founde the wickidnesse of thi seruauntis; lo! alle we ben the seruauntis of my lord, bothe we and he at whom the cuppe is foundun.
17 Dieu me préserve, reprit Joseph, d'agir de la sorte; l'homme sur qui la coupe a été trouvée sera mon esclave; mais vous, retournez en toute sécurité chez votre père.
Joseph answeride, Fer be it fro me, that Y do so; he be my seruaunt that stal the cuppe; forsothe go ye fre to youre fadir.
18 Sur quoi Juda, s'étant rapproché de lui, parla en ces termes: Je t'en conjure, seigneur, que ton serviteur dise encore une parole devant toi, et ne t'irrite pas contre ton serviteur, toi le premier après le Pharaon.
Sotheli Judas neiyede neer, and seide tristili, My lord, Y preye, thi seruaunt speke a word in thin eeris, and be thou not wrooth to thi seruaunt; for aftir Farao thou art my lord.
19 Seigneur, tu as interrogé tes serviteurs, disant: Avez-vous un père ou un frère?
Thou axidist first thi seruauntis, Han ye a fadir, ether a brother?
20 Et nous avons dit au seigneur: Nous avons un père avancé en âge, et il a un plus jeune fils, fruit de sa vieillesse; le frère de celui-ci est mort: lui seul est resté de sa mère, et son père l'aime tendrement.
And we answeriden to thee, my lord, An eld fadir is to vs, and a litil child that was borun in his eelde, whos brother of the same wombe is deed, and his modir hath hym aloone; forsothe his fadir loueth hym tendirli.
21 Et tu as dit à tes serviteurs: Amenez-le devant moi, j'aurai soin de lui.
And thou seidist to thi seruauntis, Brynge ye hym to me, and Y schal sette myn iyen on hym.
22 Et nous avons dit au seigneur: L'enfant ne pourra quitter son père; s'il quitte son père, celui-ci mourra.
We maden suggestioun to thee, my lord, the child may not forsake his fadir; for if he schal leeue the fadir, he schal die.
23 Tu as ajouté: Si votre frère le plus jeune ne vient pas avec vous, vous ne verrez plus mon visage.
And thou seidist to thi seruauntis, If youre leeste brother schal not come with you, ye schulen no more se my face.
24 Lorsque nous fûmes de retour chez ton serviteur notre père, nous lui rapportâmes les paroles de notre seigneur.
Therfor whanne we hadden stied to thi seruaunt, oure fadir, we telden to hym alle thingis whiche my lord spak; and oure fadir seide,
25 Et notre père nous dit: Partez encore, achetez-nous un peu de blé.
Turne ye ayen, and bie ye to you a litil of wheete;
26 Et nous dîmes: Nous ne pourrons aller en Égypte mais si notre frère le plus jeune vient avec nous, nous descendrons. Car nous ne verrons pas la face de l'homme, notre frère le plus jeune n'étant pas avec nous.
to whom we seiden, We moun not go; if oure leeste brother schal go doun with vs, we schulen go forth togidere; ellis, if he is absent, we doren not se the `face of the lord.
27 À quoi ton serviteur notre père répondit: Vous savez que ma femme m'a enfanté deux fils.
To whiche thingis the fadir answeride, Ye witen that my wiif childide twei sones to me;
28 L'un est sorti de chez moi; vous m'avez dit qu'il avait été la proie d'une bête farouche, et je ne l'ai pas revu jusqu'à ce jour.
oon yede out, and ye seiden, a beeste deuouride hym, and hidir to he apperith not;
29 Si donc vous emmenez loin de moi celui-ci, et qu'une maladie le prenne en chemin, de tristesse, vous ferez descendre ma vieillesse au sein de la terre. (Sheol h7585)
if ye taken also this sone, and ony thing bifallith to hym in the weye, ye schulen lede forth myn hoor heeris with morenyng to hellis. (Sheol h7585)
30 Maintenant donc, si je retourne devant ton serviteur notre père, et si l'enfant n'est pas avec nous, lui qui à sa vie tient suspendue la vie de notre père,
Therfor if Y entre to thi seruaunt, oure fadir, and the child faile, sithen his lijf hangith of the lijf of the child,
31 Dès que notre père aura vu que l'enfant n'est pas avec nous, il mourra de douleur, et nous ferons descendre au tombeau la vieillesse de ton serviteur, notre père à nous. (Sheol h7585)
and he se that the child is not with vs, he schal die, and thi seruauntis schulen lede forth hise hoor heeris with sorewe to hellis. (Sheol h7585)
32 Ton serviteur a reçu de son père l'enfant, en disant: Si je ne le ramène pas en ta demeure, si je ne le remets pas devant tes yeux, je serai coupable envers toi tous les jours de ma vie.
Be Y propirli thi seruaunt, which resseyuede this child on my feith, and bihiyte, and seide, If Y schal not brynge ayen hym, Y schal be gilti of synne ayens my fadir in al tyme;
33 Que je reste donc, en échange de l'enfant, esclave de mon seigneur, et que l'enfant parte avec ses frères.
and so Y schal dwelle thi seruaunt for the child in to the seruyce of my lord, and the child stie with hise britheren;
34 Car comment retournerais-je devant le père, l'enfant n'étant pas avec nous? Que je demeure ici et ne sois pas témoin de la douleur dont sera saisi mon père!
for Y may not go ayen to my fadir, if the child is absent, lest Y stonde a witnesse of the wretchidnesse that schal oppresse my fadir.
