Genèse 32
1 Jacob, de son côté, reprit sa route, et, ayant levé les yeux, il vit un camp de Dieu déployé. Les anges de Dieu vinrent à sa rencontre.
Likewise, Jacob continued on the journey that he had begun. And the Angels of God met him.
2 Jacob en les voyant s'écria: Voici un camp de Dieu; et il nomma ce lieu les Camps.
When he had seen them, he said, “These are the Encampments of God.” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim, that is, ‘Encampments.’
3 Et Jacob envoya des messagers à son frère Esaü, en la terre de Séir, dans le pays d'Édom.
Then he also sent messengers before him to his brother Esau, in the land of Seir, in the region of Edom.
4 Et il leur donna ses ordres, disant: Vous parlerez ainsi à mon seigneur Esaü: Ton serviteur Jacob te parle ainsi: J'ai habité auprès de Laban; j'y suis resté jusqu'à cette heure.
And he instructed them, saying: “You shall speak in this way to my lord Esau: ‘Your brother Jacob says these things: “I have sojourned with Laban, and I have been with him until the present day.
5 J'y ai acquis des bœufs, et des ânes, et du menu bétail, et des serviteurs et des servantes; j'envoie des messagers à mon seigneur Esaü, afin que son serviteur trouve grâce devant lui.
I have oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and men servants, and women servants. And now I send an ambassador to my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.”’”
6 Les messagers revinrent vers Jacob, disant: Nous sommes allés chez ton frère Esaü, et voici qu'il vient à ta rencontre avec quatre cents hommes.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We went to your brother Esau, and behold, he rushes to meet you with four hundred men.”
7 Jacob eut grande crainte, et il était très indécis; il divisa en deux troupes les hommes qui l'accompagnaient, ainsi que les bœufs, et les chamelles, et les brebis.
Jacob was very afraid. And in his terror, he divided the people who were with him, likewise the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies,
8 Jacob se disait: Si Esaü marche sur l'une des troupes et la combat, la seconde du moins pourra être sauvée.
saying: “If Esau goes to one company, and strikes it, the other company, which is left behind, will be saved.”
9 Et Jacob dit: Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Seigneur, vous qui m'avez dit: Retourne en la terre où tu es né, et je te serai favorable,
And Jacob said: “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me: ‘Return to your land, and to the place of your nativity, and I will do well for you.’
10 C'est assez pour moi de toute la justice et de toute la vérité dont vous avez usé envers votre serviteur; car j'ai traversé le Jourdain n'ayant que ce bâton, et je reviens possesseur de deux troupes.
I am less than any of your compassions and your truth, which you have fulfilled to your servant. With my staff I crossed over this Jordan. And now I go back with two companies.
11 Délivrez-moi de la main de mon frère, de la main d'Esaü, car je le crains; je crains qu'en arrivant il ne frappe et moi, et la mère avec ses enfants.
Rescue me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am very afraid of him, lest perhaps he may come and strike down the mother with the sons.
12 C'est vous qui avez dit: Je te serai favorable, et je rendrai ta race aussi nombreuse que le sable de la mer, dont nul ne saurait compter l'abondance.
You did say that you would do well by me, and that you would expand my offspring like the sand of the sea, which, because of its multitude, cannot be numbered.”
13 Il dormit cette nuit dans l'endroit où il était, il prit ensuite des biens qu'il portait, pour en faire des présents, et il envoya à son frère Esaü
And when he had slept there that night, he separated, from the things that he had, gifts for his brother Esau:
14 Deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis, vingt béliers,
two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 Quarante chamelles à lait et leurs petits, quarante bœufs, dix taureaux, vingt ânes et dix poulains.
thirty milking camels with their young, forty cows, and twenty bulls, twenty she-donkeys, and ten of their young.
16 Il les envoya par des serviteurs, chaque espèce formant un troupeau; et il dit à ses serviteurs: Marchez devant moi, et laissez un intervalle entre deux troupeaux.
And he sent them by the hands of his servants, each flock separately, and he said to his servants: “Pass before me, and let there be a space between flock and flock.”
17 Puis, il donna ses ordres à celui qui était en tête, disant: Lorsque Esaü mon frère te rencontrera et t'interrogera, disant: De qui es-tu? où vas- tu? à qui sont les bêtes qui marchent devant toi?
And he instructed the first, saying: “If you happen to meet my brother Esau, and he questions you: “Whose are you?” or, “Where are you going?” or, “Whose are these which follow you?”
18 Tu répondras: À ton serviteur Jacob; il envoie des présents à mon seigneur Esaü, et voici qu'il vient derrière nous.
you shall respond: “Your servant Jacob’s. He has sent them as a gift to my lord Esau. And he is also coming after us.”
19 Il donna ensuite ses ordres au premier serviteur, au second, au troisième et à tous ceux qui marchaient avec les troupeaux, disant: Répondez en ces termes à Esaü, lorsque vous le rencontrerez;
Similarly, he gave orders to the second, and the third, and to all who followed the flocks, saying: “Speak these same words to Esau, when you find him.
20 Dites: Voici ton serviteur Jacob qui vient derrière nous. Car, se dit- il, je l'apaiserai par les présents qui vont au devant de lui, et, après cela, je le verrai face à face, et il m'accueillera favorablement.
And you will add: ‘Your servant Jacob himself also follows after us, for he said: “I will appease him with the gifts that go ahead, and after this, I will see him; perhaps he will be gracious to me.”’”
21 Les présents partirent en avant et s'éloignèrent de lui; et cette nuit- là il coucha dans le camp.
And so the gifts went before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
22 Et, s'étant levé pendant la nuit, il prit les deux femmes, les deux servantes et les onze garçons; puis, il traversa le gué de Jaboch:
And when he had arisen early, he took his two wives, and the same number of handmaids, with his eleven sons, and he crossed over the ford of Jabbok.
23 Il les prit, puis il traversa le fleuve, et tout ce qui lui appartenait traversa aussi.
And having delivered over all the things that belonged to him,
24 Jacob resta seul; alors un homme lutta contre lui jusqu'au matin,
he remained alone. And behold, a man wrestled with him until morning.
25 Et, voyant qu'il ne pouvait l'emporter, il toucha le gras de la cuisse de Jacob, qui s'engourdit dans la lutte.
And when he saw that he would not be able to overcome him, he touched the nerve of his thigh, and immediately it withered.
26 L'ange lui dit: Laisse-moi partir, car l'aurore s'est levée; il répondit: Je ne te laisserai point partir que tu ne m'aies béni.
And he said to him, “Release me, for now the dawn ascends.” He responded, “I will not release you, unless you bless me.”
27 L'ange repartit: Quel est ton nom? il répondit Jacob.
Therefore he said, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob.”
28 Tu ne te nommeras plus Jacob, reprit l'ange, Israël sera ton nom: parce que tu as été fort contre Dieu, et que tu seras fort contre les hommes.
But he said, “Your name will not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if you have been strong against God, how much more will you prevail against men?”
29 Jacob lui fit cette question: Apprends-moi ton nom. Pourquoi, répondit- il, me demandes-tu mon nom? et sur le lieu même il le bénit.
Jacob questioned him, “Tell me, by what name are you called?” He responded, “Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him in the same place.
30 Jacob nomma cet endroit Vision de Dieu; car, dit-il, j'ai vu Dieu face à face, et la vie m'a été conservée.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.”
31 La vision de Dieu s'étant évanouie, le soleil se leva sur lui, et Jacob boitait de la cuisse.
And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he had crossed beyond Peniel. Yet in truth, he limped on his foot.
32 À cause de cela les fils d'Israël, aujourd'hui encore, ne mangent point le nerf du gras de la cuisse qui fut engourdi, parce que le gras de la cuisse de Jacob fut touché et que le nerf s'engourdit.
For this reason, the sons of Israel, even to the present day, do not eat the nerve that withered in Jacob’s thigh, because he touched the nerve of his thigh and it was obstructed.
