Genèse 31
1 Cependant, Jacob entendit les fils de Laban se dire entre eux: Jacob a pris tous les biens de notre père; c'est des biens de notre père qu'il s'est fait cette gloire où nous le voyons.
Jacob found out that Laban's sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father. All the wealth he has actually came from our father.”
2 Et Jacob regarda la face de Laban, et il vit qu'elle n'était pas pour lui comme la veille et l'avant-veille.
Jacob also noticed that Laban was treating him differently to the way he had before.
3 Le Seigneur lui-même dit à Jacob: Retourne au pays de ton père, dans ta famille; je serai avec toi.
The Lord told Jacob, “Go back to the country of your forefathers, to your family home. I will be with you.”
4 Aussitôt, Jacob envoya chercher Lia et Rachel dans la plaine où étaient les troupeaux,
Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah, telling them to come and meet him out in the fields where he was with his flock.
5 Et il leur dit: Je vois que la face de votre père n'est pour moi ni comme hier, ni comme le jour précédent; cependant le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.
“I've noticed that your father is treating me differently to the way he did before,” he told them. “But the God of my father will be with me.
6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.
You both know very well how hard I worked for your father.
7 Néanmoins, il m'a trompé, et pendant dix portées d'agneaux, il a changé ma récompense, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me faire tort.
But he's been cheating me—he's reduced my wages ten times! However, God hasn't let him hurt me.
8 S'il disait: Les bigarrés seront ta récompense, toutes les brebis produisaient des rejetons bigarrés, s'il disait, au contraire; Les blancs seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis produisaient des rejetons blancs.
If he said, ‘You can have the speckled ones as your wages,’ then the whole flock had speckled young. If he said, ‘You can have the streaked ones as your wages,’ then the whole flock had streaked young.
9 Le Seigneur a enlevé ainsi tout le bétail de votre père, pour me le donner.
This is how God took your father's livestock and gave them to me.
10 Voici ce qui est arrivé: Lorsque les mères concevaient, j'eus pendant mon sommeil une vision; je vis que les béliers et les boucs couvrant les brebis et les chèvres étaient blancs-mêlés, bigarrés et cendrés.
During the time the flock was breeding I had a dream where I saw that the male goats mating with the flock were all streaked, speckled, or spotted.
11 Et, pendant mon sommeil, l'ange du Seigneur m'a dit: Jacob; et j'ai répondu: Qu'y a-t-il?
Then in the dream the angel of the Lord spoke to me and said, ‘Jacob!’ I replied, ‘I'm here.’
12 L'ange m'a dit: Lève les yeux, vois les boucs et les béliers couvrant les chèvres et les brebis; ils sont blancs-mêlés, bigarrés et cendrés. J'ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban.
He told me, ‘Take a look and you'll see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I've been watching everything that Laban has been doing to you.
13 Je suis le Dieu qui t'apparus en la demeure de Dieu, où tu as oint pour moi une colonne, et où tu m'as fait un vœu. Maintenant donc, lève-toi et pars de cette terre; retourne au pays où tu es né, et je serai avec toi.
I am the God of Bethel, where you poured olive oil on the stone pillar and made a solemn promise to me. Now get ready to leave this land and go back to your homeland.’”
14 Rachel et Lia lui dirent: Est-ce que nous avons encore une part ou un héritage en la maison de notre père?
“There's nothing for us to inherit from our father's estate anyway,” Rachel and Leah replied.
15 Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées en étrangères? Il nous a vendues, et il a dévoré avec avidité l'argent qu'il avait retiré de nous.
“He treats us like foreigners because he sold us to you, and now he's spent all that money.
16 Que toute la richesse, toute la gloire que Dieu a enlevées à notre père, soient à nous et à nos enfants; maintenant donc fais tout ce que Dieu t'a dit.
All the wealth that God has taken from him belongs to us and our children, so do whatever God has told you to do!”
17 Et Jacob, s'étant levé, prit sur des chamelles ses femmes et ses enfants.
So Jacob got ready. He helped his children and his wives onto the camels,
18 Il emmena tout ce qui lui appartenait, tant ce qu'il avait acquis en Mésopotamie, que ce qui lui était propre, pour retourner auprès de son père Isaac, en la terre de Chanaan.
and drove all his livestock in front of him. He took with him all his possessions and livestock he'd gained during his time in Paddan-aram, and left to go back to his father in the country of Canaan.
19 Cependant, Laban était allé tondre ses brebis, et Rachel déroba les idoles de son père.
While Laban was away from home shearing his sheep, Rachel stole the household idols that belonged to her father.
20 Jacob se cacha de Laban le Syrien, ne lui faisant point savoir qu'il s'enfuyait.
Jacob also deceived Laban the Aramean by not informing him that he was going to run away.
21 Il s'en alla rapidement avec ce qui lui appartenait, traversa l'Euphrate, et hâta sa marche vers la montagne de Galaad.
So Jacob left in a hurry with everything he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed towards the hill country of Gilead.
22 Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban le Syrien que Jacob s'était enfui.
Three days later Laban found out that Jacob had run away.
23 Aussitôt, prenant avec lui ses frères, il se mit à sa poursuite, et, au bout de sept jours, il l'atteignit en la montagne de Galaad.
Taking some of his relatives with him, he chased after Jacob and caught up with him seven days later in the hill country of Gilead.
24 Or, Dieu vint vers Laban le Syrien la nuit, pendant son sommeil, et il lui dit: Garde-toi de parler méchamment à Jacob.
But during the night God came to Laban in a dream and told him, “Watch what you say to Jacob. Don't try to persuade him to come back, and don't threaten him either.”
25 Bientôt Laban eut atteint Jacob, qui avait dressé ses tentes sur la montagne; Laban fit arrêter ses frères sur les monts de Galaad.
Jacob had set up his tents in the hill country of Gilead when Laban caught up with him, so Laban and his relatives did the same.
26 Qu'as-tu fait? dit-il à Jacob; pourquoi as-tu fui secrètement? pourquoi m'as-tu volé et m'as-tu emmené mes filles comme des captives conquises par le glaive?
“Why did you deceive me like this?” Laban asked Jacob. “You carried off my daughters as if they were some prisoners captured by the sword!
27 Si tu m'avais averti, je t'aurais reconduit joyeusement avec des musiciens, au son des tambours et des cithares.
Why did you run away in secret, trying to trick me? Why didn't you come and tell me? I would have given you a good send-off, a celebration with singing and the music of tambourines and lyres.
28 Mais je n'ai pas été jugé digne d'embrasser mes petits-enfants et mes filles; tu as bien agi en insensé.
You didn't even let me kiss my grandchildren and daughters goodbye! You've really acted stupidly!
29 Mon bras est assez fort pour te maltraiter; mais le Dieu de ton père m'a parlé cette nuit, disant: Garde-toi de parler méchamment à Jacob.
I could really punish you badly, but the God of your father spoke to me last night and told me, ‘Watch what you say to Jacob. Don't try to persuade him to come back, and don't threaten him either.’
30 Pars donc, puisque tu désires si ardemment retourner dans la maison de ton père; mais pourquoi as-tu dérobé mes dieux?
Clearly you wanted to leave and go back to your family home, but why did you have to steal my idols?”
31 Jacob répondit à Laban: J'avais crainte, et je me disais: Qu'il n'aille point m'enlever ses filles et tout ce qui m'appartient.
“I ran away because I was afraid,” Jacob explained to Laban. “I was worried that you would take your daughters from me by force.
32 Jacob ajouta: Celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, qu'il ne vive point parmi nos frères; reconnais chez moi ce qui t'appartient et prends-le. Or, il ne croyait pas qu'il y eût rien chez lui, car il ignorait que Rachel sa femme eût dérobé les idoles.
As for your idols, anyone you find who has them will die. You can search everything in the presence of our relatives, and if you find I have anything that belongs to you, you can take it.” (Jacob didn't know that Rachel had stolen the household idols.)
33 Étant entré dans la demeure de Lia, Laban chercha et ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la demeure de Lia, chercha dans celle de Jacob, puis dans la demeure des deux servantes, et il ne trouva rien; il entra aussi en la demeure de Rachel.
Laban searched the tents of Jacob, Leah, and the two personal maids, but didn't find anything. He left Leah's tent and went into Rachel's tent.
34 Or, Rachel avait pris les idoles, et les ayant cachées dans le bât de sa chamelle, elle s'était assise par-dessus.
Rachel had put the household idols in a camel's saddlebag and was sitting on it. Laban carefully searched the whole tent but couldn't find them.
35 Elle dit à son père: Ne t'indigne pas, seigneur; je ne puis me lever devant toi, il m'est advenu ce qui arrive aux femmes. Et Laban chercha dans toute la demeure, et il ne trouva pas les idoles.
She said to her father, “Sir, please don't get upset with me for not standing up in your presence, but I have my period.” He looked everywhere but didn't find the idols.
36 Jacob alors s'indigna, éclata en reproches contre Laban, et il se mit à lui dire: Quelle est mon iniquité, quel est mon crime, pour que tu m'aies poursuivi,
Jacob got angry with Laban and confronted him, saying, “What crime am I guilty of? What wrong have I done to you that you've come hunting me down?
37 Et pour que tu aies fouillé tous les meubles de ma demeure? Qu'as-tu trouvé des choses de ta maison? Mets-le donc là devant tes frères et devant mes frères, qu'ils jugent entre nous deux.
You've searched through all my possessions. Did you find anything belonging to you? If you did, bring it out here before my relatives and yours so they can decide who's right!
38 J'ai passé avec toi vingt de mes années; tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont jamais été stériles; jamais je n'ai mangé des béliers de tes troupeaux.
I've worked for you for these past twenty years. During that time none of your sheep and goats miscarried, and I haven't eaten a single ram from your flock.
39 Je ne t'ai point compté ce qu'ont pris les bêtes fauves, et j'ai payé du mien les rapts de jour et les rapts de nuit,
If any of them were killed by wild animals, I never even brought you the carcass to prove the loss—I bore the loss myself. But you on the other hand always made me compensate you for any animals that were stolen, whether at night or in broad daylight.
40 J'ai été brûlé par la chaleur des jours, glacé par la froidure des nuits; le sommeil avait fui de mes yeux.
Whether it was sweating in the heat of the day, or freezing in the cold of the night when I couldn't sleep, I went on working for you for twenty years in your home.
41 Voilà vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison; je t'ai servi quatorze années pour prix de tes deux filles, et six pour tes menus troupeaux, et toi tu as changé ma récompense durant dix portées d'agneaux.
I worked fourteen years for your two daughters, and six more years with your flocks. You reduced my wages ten times!
42 Si le Dieu de mon père Abraham et la crainte d'Isaac n'étaient pas de mon côté, tu m'eusses renvoyé les mains vides; Dieu a vu mon humiliation et la fatigue de mes bras, et il t'a fait hier ses reproches.
If it weren't for the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the awesome God of Isaac, who took care of me, you would have dismissed me with nothing. But God saw my suffering, how hard I worked, and he condemned you last night.”
43 Laban répondit à Jacob: Tes filles sont mes filles et tes fils sont mes fils, ce bétail est mon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi et à mes filles. Comment pourrai-je leur nuire à elles et à leurs enfants?
Laban replied, “These are my daughters and these are my children and these are my flocks! In fact, everything you see here is mine! However, what can I do now about my daughters and their children?
44 Viens donc, je veux faire une alliance qui soit un témoignage entre moi et toi. Et il lui dit: Il n'y a personne avec nous; que Dieu soit témoin entre nous.
So let's make a solemn agreement between you and I, and it will be a witness to our mutual commitment.”
45 Jacob, ayant pris une pierre, et l'ayant dressée en forme de colonne,
Jacob took a stone and set it upright as a pillar.
46 Dit à ses frères: Rassemblez des pierres. Et ils rassemblèrent des pierres dont ils firent un autel, sur lequel ils mangèrent; et Laban dit à Jacob: Cet autel est témoin aujourd'hui entre toi et moi.
Then he told his relatives, “Go and collect some stones.” They all made a pile of stones and then sat beside it to eat a meal.
47 Laban l'appela l'autel du témoignage, et Jacob l'autel du témoin.
Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, while Jacob called it Galeed.
48 Et Laban dit à Jacob: Voilà l'autel et la colonne que j'ai élevés entre moi et toi; cet autel est témoin, cette colonne porte témoignage. C'est pourquoi l'autel fut appelé: l'Autel porte témoignage (Galaad),
Laban announced, “This pile of stone serves as a witness between me and you.” This is why it was called Galeed.
49 Et: La vision qui a été vue; que Dieu regarde entre nous deux, puisque nous allons nous séparer.
It was also called Mizpah, for as Laban said, “May the Lord keep a close eye on both of us when we're not together.
50 Si tu humilies mes filles; si avec elles tu prends d'autres femmes, fais attention: personne ne nous voit et n'est avec nous, [mais Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi].
If you treat my daughters badly or marry more wives in addition to them, God will see what you do even if no one else finds out!”
Then Laban told Jacob, “Look at this pile of stones and this pillar that I have set up as a memorial of the agreement between you and me.
52 Si jamais je franchis de ton côté ou si tu franchis du mien cet autel et cette colonne dans de mauvais desseins,
They also act as a witness to our solemn promises to each other: I will not come past them to attack you; and you will not come past them to attack me.
53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nachor juge entre nous. Et Jacob jura par l'objet de la crainte d'Isaac son père.
May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor—the God of our forefathers—be the one to judge between us in any dispute.” Jacob in turn made his solemn promise in the name of the awesome God of his father Isaac.
54 Il offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne, et convoqua ses frères; ils mangèrent, et ils burent, et ils dormirent sur la montagne.
Then he offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited all his relatives to eat a meal there. They spent the night on the mountain.
55 Ensuite, Laban se leva de grand matin, embrassa ses fils et ses filles, les bénit, et, s'étant retourné, il s'en fut en son pas.
Laban got up early in the morning and kissed his grandchildren and his daughters goodbye. He blessed them, and then left to go back home.
