Genèse 3
1 Or, le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux qu'avait créés sur la terre le Seigneur Dieu. Et le serpent dit à la femme: Pourquoi Dieu a-t-il dit: Ne mangez pas de tous les arbres du paradis?
Now, the serpent, was more crafty than any living thing of the field which Yahweh God had made, so he said unto the woman, Can it really be that God hath said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 La femme dit au serpent: Nous pouvons manger des fruits des arbres du paradis.
And the woman said unto the serpent, —Of the fruit of the trees of the garden, we may eat;
3 Quant au fruit de l'arbre qui est au milieu du paradis, Dieu a dit: Vous n'en mangerez pas, vous n'y toucherez pas, afin que vous ne mouriez point.
but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said Ye shall not eat of it neither shall ye touch it, —lest ye die.
4 Le serpent dit à la femme: Vous ne mourrez point de mort.
And the serpent said unto the woman, —Ye shall not die,
5 Car le Seigneur Dieu sait, au contraire, que le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s'ouvriront, et vous serez comme des dieux, connaissant le bien et le mal.
For God doth know, that in the day ye eat thereof, then shall your eyes be opened, —and ye shall become like God, knowing good and evil.
6 La femme vit que l'arbre était bon comme aliment qu'il était gracieux à l'œil, et magnifique à contempler. Et, ayant pris de son fruit, elle en mangea; de plus, elle en donna à son mari, et ils mangèrent.
And, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes and the tree was pleasant to make one knowing, then took she of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and she gave to her husband also, along with her, and he did eat.
7 Aussitôt leurs yeux à tous les deux s'ouvrirent; ils reconnurent qu'ils étaient nus; ils attachèrent les unes aux autres des feuilles de figuier, et ils s'en firent des ceintures.
Then were opened the eyes of them both, and they knew that, naked, they were, —so they tacked together fig-leaves, and made for themselves girdles,
8 Et ils entendirent la voix du Seigneur Dieu, se promenant l'après-midi dans le paradis, et Adam et sa femme se cachèrent de la face du Seigneur Dieu, dans l'ombrage des arbres du paradis.
Then heard they the sound of Yahweh God, walking to and fro in the garden at the breeze of the day, —so he hid himself—the man with his wife, from the face of Yahweh God, amid the trees of the garden.
9 Le Seigneur Dieu appela Adam, et il lui dit: Adam, où es-tu?
And Yahweh God called unto the man, —and said to him, Where art thou?
10 Celui-ci répondit: J'ai entendu votre voix, comme vous vous promeniez dans le paradis, et j'ai eu peur parce que je suis nu, et je me suis caché.
And he said, The sound of thee, heard I in the garden, and I was afraid, for, naked, was I, so I hid myself.
11 Dieu lui dit: Qui t'a fait savoir que tu es nu, si tu n'as mangé de l'arbre, de celui-là seul dont je t'avais défendu de manger?
And he said, Who told thee that, naked, thou wast? Of the tree whereof I commanded thee not to eat, hast thou eaten?
12 Adam reprit: La femme que vous m'avez donnée pour être avec moi m'a donné elle-même du fruit de l'arbre, et j'en ai mangé.
And the man said, —The woman whom thou didst put with me, she, gave me of the tree, so I did eat.
13 Le Seigneur Dieu dit alors à la femme: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Et la femme dit: Le serpent m'a trompée, et j'ai mangé.
Then said Yahweh God to the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, the serpent, deceived me, so I did eat.
14 Le Seigneur Dieu dit au serpent: Parce que tu as fait cela, maudit sois- tu parmi tous les bestiaux et les bêtes fauves de la terre; tu marcheras sur la poitrine et le ventre, et tu mangeras de la terre tous les jours de ta vie.
Then said Yahweh God unto the serpent—Because thou hast done this, Accursed, art thou above every tame-beast, and above every wild-beast of the field, —on thy belly, shalt thou go, and dust, shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.
15 J'établirai une haine entre toi et la femme, et entre ta race et sa race. Il surveillera ta tête, et tu guetteras son talon.
And enmity, will I put between thee, and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed, —He shall crush thy head, but, thou, shalt crush his heel.
16 Puis le Seigneur dit à la femme: Je multiplierai et multiplierai tes gémissements et tes douleurs; tu enfanteras dans les douleurs, tu attendras le commandement de ton époux, et il te maîtrisera.
Unto the woman, he said, I will, increase, thy pain of pregnancy, In pain, shalt thou bear children, —Yet, unto thy husband, shall be thy longing, Though, he, rule over thee.
17 Quant à Adam, Dieu lui dit: Parce que tu as écouté la voix de ta femme, et que tu as mangé de l'arbre, du seul dont je t'avais défendu de manger, maudite sera ta terre en tes travaux. Tu t'en nourriras dans les douleurs tous les jours de ta vie.
And, to the man, he said, Because thou didst hearken to the voice of thy wife, and so didst eat of the tree as to which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, Accursed be the ground for thy sake, In pain, shalt thou eat of it, all the days of thy life;
18 Elle produira pour toi des épines et de l'ivraie, et tu mangeras l'herbe des champs.
Thorn also and thistle, shall it shoot forth to thee, —when thou hast come to eat of the herb of the field:
19 C'est à la sueur de ton front que tu mangeras ton pain: jusqu'à ce que tu retournes dans la terre d'où tu as été tiré, parce que: Tu es terre, et tu t'en iras dans la terre.
In the sweat of thy face, shalt thou eat bread, until thou return to the ground, because therefrom, wast thou taken, —For, dust, thou art, And, unto dust, shalt thou return.
20 Adam donna à la femme le nom d'Éve (vie), parce qu'elle-même est mère de tous les vivants.
So the man called the name of his wife, Eve, —in that, she, was made mother of every one living.
21 Le Seigneur Dieu fit ensuite à Adam et à sa femme des tuniques de peau dont il les revêtit.
And Yahweh God made for the man—and for his wife—tunics of skin and clothed them.
22 Et Dieu dit: Voilà donc Adam devenu comme l'un de nous, pour connaître le bien et le mal; mais maintenant qu'il n'aille pas étendre la main et prendre encore de l'arbre de vie, et en manger, car il vivrait toujours.
Then said Yahweh God—Lo! man, hath become like one of us, in respect of knowing good and evil, —Now, therefore, lest he thrust forth his hand, and take even of the tree of life, and eat, and live to times age-abiding, —
23 Et le Seigneur Dieu le chassa du paradis de délices, pour qu'il travaillât à la terre de laquelle il avait été tiré.
So Yahweh God put him forth from the garden of Eden, —to till the ground wherefrom he had been taken.
24 Il bannit Adam; il l'établit à l'opposé du paradis de délices, et il plaça des chérubins, armés d'épées flamboyantes qu'ils faisaient tournoyer, pour garder le chemin de l'arbre de vie.
So he expelled the man, —and caused to dwell—in front of the garden of Eden—cherubim and a brandishing sword—flame, to keep the way to the tree of life.
