Genèse 26

1 Il y eu alors une famine dans la contrée, outre la première qui avait eu lieu du temps d'Abraham. Isaac s'en alla chez Abimélech, roi des Philistins, en Gérare.

And there came to be a famine in the land, besides the first famine which happened in the days of Abraham, —so Isaac went his way unto Abimelech, king of the Philistines towards Gerar;

2 Car le Seigneur lui apparut et lui dit: Ne descends pas en Égypte, mais demeure en la terre que je te dirai.

and Yahweh appeared unto him, and said, do not go down towards Egypt, —Make thy habitation in the land, which I may name unto thee:

3 Demeure en cette terre, je serai avec toi, je te bénirai; je donnerai toute cette terre à toi et à ta race; je maintiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à ton père Abraham.

Sojourn in this land, that I may be with thee and bless thee, —for, to thee, and to thy seed, will I give all these lands, So will I establish the oath which I sware to Abraham thy father;

4 Je multiplierai la postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, je donnerai à ta race toute cette terre, et toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta postérité;

and will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heavens, and will give to thy seed, all these lands, —And all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves in thy seed:

5 Parce que ton père Abraham a écouté ma parole, a gardé mes commandements, mes préceptes, mes jugements et mes lois.

Because that Abraham hearkened unto my voice, —and so kept my charge, my commandments my statutes and my laws.

6 Et Isaac demeura en Gérare.

So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

7 Les hommes de la ville l'interrogèrent au sujet de Rébécca sa femme, et il dit: C'est ma sœur; car il avait crainte de dire: C'est ma femme; de peur que les hommes de la ville ne vinssent à le tuer à cause de Rébécca, parce qu'elle était d'une grande beauté.

Then asked the men of the place as to his wife, and he said, My sister, is she, —For he feared to say My wife, lest [said he] the men of the place should slay me on account of Rebekah, for fair to look on, she is.

8 Il fut longtemps en ce lieu, et Abimélech, roi de Gérare, s'étant penché à sa fenêtre, vit Isaac jouant avec Rébécca, sa femme.

And it came to pass when the days had lengthened out to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines, looked out through the lattice of a window, —and he beheld and lo! Isaac—laughing with Rebekah his wife.

9 Et il appela Isaac, et il lui dit: Elle est donc ta femme? Pourquoi as- tu dit: C'est ma sœur? Isaac répondit: Je l'ai dit, de peur de mourir à cause d'elle.

So Abimelech called for Isaac, and said, But lo she is, thy wife! How then, saidst thou, She is, my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because, I said, Lest I die on her account.

10 Abimélech lui dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu traités de la sorte? Peu s'en est fallu que quelqu'un de notre race n'ait dormi avec ta femme, et tu nous aurais fait tomber par ignorance.

Then, said, Abimelech, What is this thou hast done to us? A little more, and one of the people might have lien with thy wife, so shouldst thou have brought upon us, guilt.

11 Abimélech aussitôt donna ses ordres à son peuple, disant: Quiconque touchera à cet homme ou à sa femme périra.

And Abimelech commanded all the people saying, —He that toucheth this man or his wife, shall surely be put to death

12 Isaac ensemença cette terre, et il obtint, cette année, de l'orge au centuple, car le Seigneur le bénit.

And Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year, a hundredfold, —seeing that Yahweh had blessed him.

13 Et l'homme fut glorifié; il prospéra avec le temps jusqu'à devenir très grand.

So the man waxed great, —and went on and on waxing great until that he had waxed exceeding great.

14 Il eut des menus troupeaux de brebis, des troupeaux de bœufs et beaucoup de terres. Les Philistins lui portèrent même envie.

So he came to have possessions of flocks and possessions of herds, and a large body of servants, —and the Philistines envied him.

15 Et tous les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés de son vivant, ils les bouchèrent et les remplirent de terre.

And as for all the wells which the servants of his father digged, in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped them up, and filled them with dust.

16 Alors, Abimélech dit à Isaac: Éloigne-toi, car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous.

And Abimelech said unto Isaac, —Get thee from us, for thou hast become far mightier than we.

17 Isaac partit donc; il vint camper dans la vallée de Gérare, et il y demeura.

So Isaac went from thence, —and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 Là, il déblaya les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés, et qui avaient été comblés par les Philistins après la mort d'Abraham; et il donna à ces puits les mêmes noms que leur avait donnés son père.

And Isaac again digged the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father, and which the Philistines stopped up after the death of Abraham, —and he called their names, after the names which his father called them.

19 Les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent encore dans la gorge de Gérare; et ils y trouvèrent un puits d'eau vive.

And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, —and found there a well of living water.

20 Sur ce, les pâtres de Gérare combattirent contre les pâtres d'Isaac, disant que l'eau leur appartenait; aussi les serviteurs d'Isaac donnèrent-ils à ce puits le nom de puits de l'Iniquité; les Philistins, en effet, avaient été injustes envers lui.

And the herdmen of Gerar disputed with the herdmen of Isaac saying, Ours, is the, water! So he called the name of the well Esek, because they had stirred up a quarrel with him.

21 S'étant éloigné, il creusa un autre puits; comme ils contestèrent aussi celui-là, il lui donna le nom de puits de l'Inimitié.

And they digged another well, and they disputed over that also, —so he called the name thereof Sitnah.

22 Et, s'étant éloigné, il creusa un puits nouveau pour lequel il n'y eut point de combat, et il le nomma puits de Latitude, disant: Le Seigneur maintenant nous a dilatés et agrandis sur cette terre.

And he moved on from thence and digged another well, and they disputed not for it, —so he called the name thereof. Rehoboth, and said, For, now, hath Yahweh made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 Enfin, de là il remonta vers le puits du Serment.

And he went up from thence, to Beer-sheba.

24 Dès la première nuit, le Seigneur lui apparut, et il lui dit: Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham ton père; n'aie point de crainte, car je suis avec toi; je te bénirai, et je multiplierai ta race, à cause d'Abraham ton père.

And Yahweh appeared unto him the same night, and said, I, am the God of Abraham thy father, —Do not fear for with thee, am, I, And I will bless thee and multiply thy seed, For the sake of Abraham my servant.

25 En conséquence, il bâtit en ce lieu un autel; il y invoqua le nom du Seigneur; il y dressa ses tentes, et ses serviteurs y creusèrent un puits, toujours dans la gorge de Gérare.

So he builded there all altar and called on the name of Yahweh, and spread out there, his tent, —and the servants of Isaac cut out there a well.

26 Abimélech vint le trouver de Gérare, avec Ochosath, gardien de ses femmes, et Phichol, général en chef de ses armées.

And, Abimelech, came unto him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol, commander of his host.

27 Et Isaac leur dit: Pourquoi venez-vous vers moi, vous qui m'avez haï et chassé loin de vous?

And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore have ye come in mite me, seeing that, ye, hated me, and sent me away from you?

28 Ils répondirent: Nous avons vu que le Seigneur est avec toi, et nous avons dit: Qu'un jugement intervienne entre nous et toi; nous voulons faire avec toi une alliance;

And they said: We, saw plainly, that Yahweh was with thee, so we said, Let there be we pray thee an oath betwixt us both, betwixt us and thee, —and let us solemnise a covenant with thee: —

29 Pour que tu ne nous veuilles pas plus de mal que nous ne t'en avons voulu, et que tu agisses envers nous comme nous envers toi, nous qui même t'avons si bien traité et t'avons congédié en paix; maintenant béni sois-tu du Seigneur.

That, thou wilt not do wrong by us, according as we touched not thee, and according as we did by thee nothing but good, and then sent thee away in peace, thee who, now, art blessed of Yahweh!

30 Il leur fit donc un festin, et ils mangèrent, et ils burent.

So he made for them a banquet, and they did eat and drink, —

31 Puis, s'étant levés de grand matin, ils se firent un serment mutuel; Isaac les congédia, et ils partirent avec une sauvegarde.

and rose up early in the morning, and took an oath each man to his brother, so Isaac let them go, and they departed from him in peace.

32 Or, il arriva en ce même jour que les serviteurs d'Isaac survenant lui donnèrent des nouvelles du puits qu'ils avaient creusé, et ils dirent: Nous n'avons point trouvé d'eau.

And it came to pass, on the same day, that the servants of Isaac came in, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said to him, We have found water!

33 Et Isaac appela ce puits: puits du Serment; c'est pourquoi encore de nos jours la ville qui s'y trouve s'appelle puits du Serment (Bersabée).

So he called it, Shibah. For this cause, hath the name of the city, been Beer-sheba, unto this day.

34 Or, Esaü avait quarante ans, et il prit pour femmes: Judith, fille de l'Hettéen Beoch, et Basemath, fille de l'Hettéen Elon.

And when Esau was forty years old, he took to wife Judith, daughter of Beeri. the Hittite; and Basemath, daughter of Elon, the Hittite;

35 Mais elles étaient en désaccord avec Isaac et avec Rébécca.

and they became a bitterness of spirit, to Isaac and to Rebekah.
