Genèse 20

1 Abraham se transporta dans la terre du midi, et il demeura entre Cadès et Sur, puis il vint habiter en Gérare.

Now Abraham journeyed from there to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in Gerar,

2 Abraham dit alors de sa femme Sarra: Elle est ma sœur; car il avait crainte de dire: C'est ma femme, de peur qu'à cause d'elle les hommes de la ville ne le tuassent. Et Abimélech, roi de Gérare, fit enlever Sarra.

Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar had Sarah brought to him.

3 Or, le Seigneur entra vers Abimélech pendant son sommeil, la nuit, et dit: Tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as prise, car elle est mariée à un homme.

One night, however, God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”

4 Abimélech ne s'était point encore approché d'elle; il dit donc: Seigneur, perdrez-vous une nation juste pour avoir ignoré?

Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?

5 Lui-même ne m'a-t-il pas dit: C'est ma sœur? Elle-même n'a-t-elle point dit: Il est mon frère? C'est dans la pureté de mon cœur et l'équité de mes mains que j'ai fait cela.

Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.”

6 Le Seigneur lui dit, toujours pendant son sommeil: Je sais que tu as agi avec un cœur pur; aussi t'ai-je préservé de pécher contre moi. Je ne t'ai point laissé t'approcher de cette femme.

Then God said to Abimelech in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

7 Rends-la donc à son mari; c'est un prophète qui priera pour toi, et tu vivras; mais si tu ne la rends point, sache que tu périras avec tout ce qui est à toi.

Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet; he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, be aware that you will surely die—you and all who belong to you.”

8 Abimélech s'étant hâté de se lever de grand matin, appela tous ses serviteurs, et leur répéta toutes ces paroles, et tous ces hommes eurent grande crainte.

Early the next morning Abimelech got up and summoned all his servants; and when he described to them all that had happened, the men were terrified.

9 Abimélech appela aussi Abraham, et il lui dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu traités de la sorte; avions-nous péché envers toi pour que tu fisses tomber ainsi sur moi et sur mon royaume ce grand péché? Tu m'as fait ce que personne ne ferait.

Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought such tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”

10 Et Abimélech ajouta: En vue de quoi en as-tu agi de la sorte?

Abimelech also asked Abraham, “What prompted you to do such a thing?”

11 Abraham répondit: Je me suis, en effet, dit: Peut-être n'y a-t-il point de piété en ce lieu, et vont-ils me tuer à cause de ma femme.

Abraham replied, “I thought to myself, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place. They will kill me on account of my wife.’

12 Du reste, elle est véritablement ma sœur de père et non de mère, et elle est devenue ma femme.

Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father—though not the daughter of my mother—and she became my wife.

13 Et il est advenu, lorsque Dieu m'a fait sortir de la maison de mon père, que j'ai dit à ma femme: Tu me rendras cet équitable service en tous lieux où nous irons; dis de moi: C'est mon frère.

So when God had me journey from my father’s house, I said to Sarah, ‘This is how you can show your loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

14 Abimélech prit mille doubles drachmes, et des brebis, et des veaux, et des serviteurs et des servantes, qu'il donna à Abraham, et il lui rendit sa femme Sarra.

So Abimelech brought sheep and cattle, menservants and maidservants, and he gave them to Abraham and restored his wife Sarah to him.

15 Et Abimélech dit à Abraham: Voilà ma terre devant toi, séjourne où il te plaira.

And Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you. Settle wherever you please.”

16 Il dit aussi à Sarra: Tu vois, je donne à ton frère mille drachmes; elles seront pour faire respecter ton visage et celui de tes suivantes; sois désormais véridique en tout.

And he said to Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is your vindication before all who are with you; you are completely cleared.”

17 Abraham pria Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélech, sa femme et ses servantes, et elles enfantèrent.

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants, so that they could again bear children—

18 Car le Seigneur avait fermé toutes les entrailles, en la maison d'Abimélech, à cause de Sarra, femme d'Abraham.

for on account of Abraham’s wife Sarah, the LORD had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household.
