Genèse 2
1 Le ciel et la terre furent ainsi achevés, avec toute leur parure.
The creation of the heavens, the earth, and everything in them was complete.
2 Dieu acheva, le sixième jour, ses œuvres, les œuvres qu'il avait faites; et il se reposa le septième jour de ses travaux, de tous les travaux qu'il avait accomplis.
By the time the seventh day came, God had finished the work he'd done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work he'd been doing.
3 Et Dieu bénit le septième jour, et le sanctifia, parce que ce jour-là il s'était reposé de tous ses travaux, des travaux qu'il avait entrepris de faire.
God blessed the seventh day, and set it apart as holy, because he rested from all the work he'd done in creation.
4 Voilà le livre de la naissance du ciel et de la terre, telle qu'elle s'accomplit, le jour où le Seigneur Dieu acheva de créer le ciel et la terre,
This is the account of the Lord God's creation when he made the heavens and the earth.
5 Et toute la verdure des champs avant qu'elle naquît de la terre, et toute plante herbacée avant qu'elle eût germé; car Dieu n'arrosait point encore la terre, comme aussi il n'y avait point d'homme pour la travailler.
Up to this point there were no wild plants or crops growing on the earth, because the Lord God hadn't sent rain, and there was no one to cultivate the ground.
6 Seulement une fontaine jaillissait du sol, et abreuvait toute la face de la terre.
Dew came up from the earth and made the whole surface of the ground wet.
7 Pour faire l'homme, Dieu pétrit une masse d'argile extraite de la terre, et sur sa face, il souffla un souffle de vie, et l'homme devint une âme vivante.
The Lord God shaped the man Adam from the dust of the ground. He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living being.
8 Or, Dieu avait créé un paradis dans Éden, à l'orient; et il y plaça l'homme qu'il venait de former.
The Lord planted a garden in Eden, in the east. There he put the man Adam he had created.
9 Dieu aussi avait fait germer de la terre tout arbre à l'aspect magnifique et aux fruits délicieux, et, au milieu du paradis, l'arbre de vie avec l'arbre de la science du bien et du mal.
The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow in the garden, beautiful trees and trees producing fruit that's good to eat. The tree of life was in the middle of the garden, along with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Pour arroser le paradis, un fleuve jaillissait d'Éden, d'où il sortait divisé en quatre bras.
A river flowed out from Eden to water the garden. From there it split into four branches.
11 Le nom de l'un est Phison, celui qui entoure la terre d'Évilat, d'où vient l'or.
The first branch was called the Pishon and it flowed through the whole land of Havilah, where gold is found.
12 On sait que l'or de cette terre est excellent; la aussi sont l'anthrax et la pierre verte.
(The gold from that land is pure. Bdellium and onyx stone are also found there.)
13 Le nom du second fleuve est Gehon; c'est celui qui entoure la terre d'Éthiopie.
The second branch was called the Gihon and it flowed through the whole land of Cush.
14 Le troisième fleuve est le Tigre; c'est celui qui coule en face des Assyriens. Le quatrième fleuve est l'Euphrate.
The third branch was called the Tigris and it flowed east of the city of Asshur. The fourth branch was called the Euphrates.
15 Le Seigneur prit l'homme qu'il avait formé, et il le plaça dans le paradis de délices, pour y travailler et le garder.
The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and care for it.
16 Le Seigneur fit ensuite un précepte à Adam, disant: Tu te nourriras de tous les arbres du paradis.
The Lord God ordered Adam, “You are free to eat fruit from every tree in the garden,
17 Mais de l'arbre de la science du bien et du mal, gardez-vous d'en manger, car, le jour où vous en mangerez, vous mourrez de mort.
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because the day you eat from it you are certain to die.”
18 Puis le Seigneur dit: Il n'est pas bon que l'homme soit seul; créons-lui un aide semblable à lui.
Then the Lord God said, “It's not good for Adam to be alone. I will make someone to help him, someone that's like him.”
19 Or, Dieu avait aussi formé de la terre toutes les bêtes des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les avait conduits devant Adam pour qu'il sût comment il les nommerait, car tout nom qu'Adam donna à chaque âme vivante devint, en effet, son nom.
The Lord God used the ground to make all the wild animals, and all the birds. He took them all to Adam to see what he would call them, and Adam named every living creature.
20 Adam donna des noms à tous les bestiaux, et à tous les oiseaux du ciel, et à toutes les bêtes des champs. Mais il ne se trouvait pas pour Adam d'aide semblable à lui.
Adam gave names to all the livestock, all the birds, and all the wild animals. But Adam didn't find anyone like him who could help him.
21 Alors Dieu fit tomber Adam en extase et l'endormit; puis il prit une de ses côtes, qu'il remplaça par de la chair.
So the Lord God put Adam into a deep sleep and as he slept the Lord God removed one of Adam's ribs and closed up the place where he took it with body tissue.
22 Et de cette côte qu'il avait prise à Adam, il forma une femme et il la conduisit a Adam.
The Lord God made a woman, using the rib he'd taken from Adam, and presented her to Adam.
23 Et Adam dit: Ceci maintenant est un os de mes os et une chair de ma chair. Celle-ci sera appelée femme, parce qu'elle a été prise de la chair même de l'homme.
“Finally!” said Adam. “Here is bone from my bone and flesh from my flesh. She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.”
24 À cause de cela, l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, il restera fortement attaché à sa femme, et ils seront deux en une seule chair
This is the reason a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one being.
25 Ils étaient nus tous deux: Adam et sa femme; et ils n'en avaient point honte.
Adam and his wife Eve were both naked, but they weren't embarrassed about it.
