Esdras 4
1 Et ceux qui opprimaient Juda et Benjamin ouïrent que les enfants de la captivité bâtissaient un temple au Seigneur Dieu d'Israël.
Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building the temple to the LORD God of Israel;
2 Et ils s'approchèrent de Zorobabel et des chefs de famille, et ils leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous, parce que, comme vous, nous cherchons notre Dieu, et que nous lui sacrifions, depuis le temps d'Asaradan, roi des Assyriens, qui nous a transportés ici.
Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of the fathers, and said to them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, who brought us up here.
3 Et Zorobabel, et Josué, et le reste des chefs de famille d'Israël, leur répondirent: Ce n'est pas avec vous que nous bâtirons un temple à notre Dieu; car, nous seuls, tous ensemble, nous bâtirons au Seigneur notre Dieu, comme nous l'a prescrit Cyrus, roi des Perses.
But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said to them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4 Et le peuple de la terre affaiblissait les mains de Juda, et il l'empêchait de bâtir.
Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5 Et des gens, salariés pour nuire aux fils de Juda, complotèrent pour ruiner leurs desseins, tant que vécut Cyrus, jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi des Perses.
And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 Au commencement du règne d'Assuérus, ils écrivirent une lettre contre ceux qui habitaient Jérusalem et Juda.
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote to him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 Et, durant les jours d'Arthasastha, Tabéel écrivit une lettre bienveillante à Mithradate et aux autres serviteurs; le collecteur des impôts écrivit à Arthasastha, roi des Perses, une lettre en syriaque avec la traduction.
And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian language, and interpreted in the Syrian language.
8 Rheum le chancelier, et Samsa le scribe, écrivirent aussi une lettre contre Jérusalem au roi Arthasastha.
Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9 Voici ce que jugent Rhéum le chancelier, Samsa le scribe, et le reste de ceux qui, avec nous, sont tes serviteurs: les Dinéens, les Apharsathachéens, les Tharphaléens, les Apharséens, les Arechyéens, les Babyloniens, les Susanachéens, les Davéens,
Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10 Et les autres nations que le grand et vénérable Assenaphar a transportées dans les villes de Samarie; celles qui résident sur le territoire en deçà du fleuve.
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side of the river, and now.
11 Suit la teneur de la lettre qu'ils envoyèrent: À Arthasastha, roi, ses serviteurs, en deçà du fleuve:
this is the copy of the letter that they sent to him, even to Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side of the river, and now.
12 Que le roi sache que les Juifs qui sont partis de son territoire pour cette terre sont arrivés à Jérusalem, ville rebelle et méchante, qu'ils la rebâtissent, qu'ils en ont restauré les remparts, et qu'ils les ont élevés au-dessus des fondations.
let it be known to the king, that the Jews who came from thee to us are come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the evil city, and have set up the walls, and joined the foundations.
13 Que le roi sache bien qu'aussitôt leur ville reconstruite et leurs murs réparés, ils cesseront d'être tes tributaires, ils ne donneront rien; et ainsi, ils feront tort aux rois;
Be it known now to the king, that, if this city shall be built, and the walls set up again, then they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt diminish the revenue of the kings.
14 Et il ne nous est point possible de voir le roi outragé; c'est pourquoi nous avons envoyé un message pour instruire le roi,
Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not good for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and informed the king;
15 Afin que l'on regarde dans le livre des archives de tes pères, où tu trouveras et tu apprendras que cette ville est une ville rebelle, qu'elle fait tort aux rois et aux royaumes, qu'il y a toujours eu chez elle des esclaves fugitifs, et que c'est pour cela qu'elle a été dépeuplée.
That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same from of old: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16 Nous déclarons donc au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie, si ses remparts sont relevés, il n'y aura plus de paix pour toi.
We inform the king that, if this city shall be built again, and the walls set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side of the river.
17 Et le roi envoya dire à Rhéum le chancelier, à Samsa le scribe, et à ses serviteurs qui habitaient en Samarie et en deçà du fleuve: La paix;
Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, Peace, and now.
18 Le collecteur des impôts que vous nous avez envoyé a été appelé devant moi.
the letter which ye sent to us hath been plainly read before me.
19 Et j'ai fait un édit; puis, nous avons examiné, et nous avons trouvé que cette ville de tout temps s'est soulevée contre les rois; que la rébellion, que la désertion y résident.
And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city from of old hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.
20 Or, il y a eu en Jérusalem des rois puissants; ils ont maîtrisé toute la contrée au delà de l'Euphrate; d'abondants revenus et des impôts leur ont été payés.
There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them.
21 Maintenant donc, faites un édit pour suspendre le travail de ces hommes; cette ville ne sera plus rebâtie.
Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22 Soyez attentifs à maintenir cet édit; ne vous en relâchez point, de peur qu'un jour le mal ne s'y aggrave au détriment du roi.
Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the harm of the kings?
23 Le collecteur des impôts d'Arthasastha, roi, lut donc cette lettre devant Rhéum le chancelier, Samsa le scribe, et les autres serviteurs du roi, et ils allèrent en toute hâte à Jérusalem et en Juda avec des troupes et de la cavalerie, et ils arrêtèrent les travaux du peuple.
Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24 Ainsi, la reconstruction du temple de Dieu fut suspendue à Jérusalem, et on ne la reprit qu'à la seconde année du règne de Darius.
Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
