Exode 4

1 Moïse répondit à Dieu, disant: Et s'ils ne me croient point, s'ils sont indociles à ma voix (car ils me diront sans doute: Dieu ne t'est point apparu), que leur dirai-je?

And Moses answered and said, But behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken to my voice, for they will say, Jehovah has not appeared to thee.

2 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Qu'as-tu là dans ta main? Une baguette, répondit- il.

And Jehovah said to him, What is that in thy hand? And he said, A rod.

3 Le Seigneur reprit: Jette-la à terre. Il la jeta à terre et elle devint serpent, et Moïse s'en éloigna bien vite.

And he said, Cast in on the ground. And he cast it on the ground. And it became a serpent, and Moses fled from before it.

4 Le Seigneur dit ensuite à Moïse: Étends la main et saisis la queue du serpent. Il étendit la main, et il saisit la queue du serpent, qui redevint baguette dans sa main,

And Jehovah said to Moses, Put forth thy hand, and take it by the tail (and he put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand),

5 Tandis que Dieu disait: C'est pour qu'ils croient en toi et à cette apparition devant toi du Dieu de tes pères, du Dieu d'Abraham, du Dieu d'Isaac, du Dieu de Jacob.

that they may believe that Jehovah, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to thee.

6 Puis le Seigneur ajouta: Mets ta main dans ton sein. Il mit la main dans son sein, et, lorsqu'il la retira, elle était devenue comme de la neige.

And Jehovah said furthermore to him, Put now thy hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom. And when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as snow.

7 Dieu dit encore: Remets ta main dans ton sein. Il remit la main dans son sein, et dès qu'il l'eut retirée, elle avait repris la couleur de la chair.

And he said, Put thy hand into thy bosom again. (And he put his hand into his bosom again, and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.)

8 Et Dieu dit: S'ils ne te croient point et ne se rendent pas à la voix du premier signe, ils croiront à la voix du second.

And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, nor hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

9 S'ils ne croient pas à ces deux signes, et qu'ils restent indociles à ta voix, tu prendras de l'eau du fleuve, tu la verseras à terre, et cette eau du fleuve que tu auras prise deviendra du sang.

And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, nor hearken to thy voice, that thou shall take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land. And the water which thou take out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

10 Et Moïse dit à Dieu: Je vous conjure, Seigneur, je ne suis point capable; je ne l'étais ni hier, ni le jour précédent, je ne le suis pas même depuis que vous avez commencé à parler à votre serviteur; je suis bègue et lent à m'exprimer.

And Moses said to Jehovah, Oh, Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou have spoken to thy servant, for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

11 Le Seigneur répondit à Moïse: Qui a donné une bouche à l'homme, qui l'a fait muet et sourd, qui l'a fait clairvoyant ou aveugle? n'est-ce point moi, le Seigneur?

And Jehovah said to him, Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes a man dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, Jehovah?

12 Marche donc, et je t'ouvrirai la bouche, et je te suggérerai ce que tu auras à dire.

Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shall speak.

13 Et Moïse dit: Je vous conjure, Seigneur, choisissez un autre tout à fait capable, celui que vous devez envoyer.

And he said, Oh, Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou will send.

14 Le Seigneur fut irrité contre Moïse, et il dit: N'as-tu pas Aaron ton frère, le lévite: je sais qu'il parlera, lui, pour toi; il viendra à ta rencontre; et, après t'avoir vu, il sera rempli de joie.

And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is there not Aaron thy brother the Levite? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he comes forth to meet thee, and when he sees thee, he will be glad in his heart.

15 Tu lui parleras, tu feras passer mes paroles par sa bouche, et j'ouvrirai ta bouche et la sienne, je vous suggérerai ce que vous aurez à faire.

And thou shall speak to him, and put the words in his mouth. And I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do,

16 Il parlera à ta place au peuple, il sera ta bouche, et tu seras pour lui la parole de Dieu.

and he shall be thy spokesman to the people. And it shall come to pass, that he shall be to thee a mouth, and thou shall be to him as God.

17 Cette même baguette qui a été changée en serpent, la la prendras dans ta main, et par elle tu feras des prodiges.

And thou shall take this rod in thy hand, with which thou shall do the signs.

18 Alors, Moïse s'éloigna, rentra chez Jéthro son beau-père, et dit: Je vais partir et retourner vers mes frères en Égypte; je verrai s'ils vivent encore. Et Jéthro dit à Moïse: Va et porte-toi bien. Or, après un grand nombre de jours, le roi d'Égypte était mort.

And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.

19 Le Seigneur avait dit à Moïse en Madian: Pars, retourne en Égypte, car ceux qui en voulaient à ta vie ne sont plus.

And Jehovah said to Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt, for all the men are dead who sought thy life.

20 Moïse ayant donc pris sa femme et ses enfants, les fit monter sur des ânes, et retourna en Égypte. Il prit aussi en sa main sa baguette, celle qu'il avait auprès de Dieu.

And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand.

21 Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Marche, rentre en Égypte, et tu verras les prodiges que j'accomplirai par tes mains; tu les feras devant le Pharaon, et j'endurcirai son cœur, et il ne congédiera pas le peuple.

And Jehovah said to Moses, When thou go back into Egypt, see that thou do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in thy hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.

22 Et tu diras au Pharaon: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Israël est mon fils premier-né;

And thou shall say to Pharaoh, Thus says Jehovah, Israel is my son, my firstborn,

23 Et je te dis: Congédie mon peuple, afin qu'il m'offre un sacrifice; si tu refuses de le congédier, prends garde, je ferai périr ton fils premier-né.

and I have said to thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me, and thou have refused to let him go. Behold, I will slay thy son, thy firstborn.

24 Or, pendant le voyage, à la halte, un ange du Seigneur rencontra Moïse, et il cherchait à le tuer.

And it came to pass on the way at the lodging-place, that Jehovah met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Aussitôt Séphora, ayant pris un caillou, circoncit son fils, et Moïse tomba aux pieds de l'ange, disant: Il vient de couler, le sang de la circoncision de mon fils.

Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet. And she said, Surely a bridegroom of blood thou are to me.

26 Et l'ange le laissa libre parce qu'il avait dit: il vient de couler, le sang de la circoncision de mon fils.

So he let him alone. Then she said, A bridegroom of blood thou are, because of the circumcision.

27 Cependant, le Seigneur dit à Aaron: Va dans le désert à la rencontre de Moïse. Aaron étant parti, rencontra son frère en la montagne de Dieu (Horeb), et ils s'embrassèrent.

And Jehovah said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him on the mountain of God, and kissed him.

28 Moïse redit à son frère toutes les paroles du Seigneur au sujet de sa mission, et tous les ordres qu'il lui avait donnés.

And Moses told Aaron all the words of Jehovah with which he had sent him, and all the signs with which he had ordered him.

29 Ensuite, il partit avec Aaron, et ils rassemblèrent les anciens des fils d'Israël.

And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the sons of Israel.

30 Et Aaron dit toutes les paroles que le Seigneur avait dites à Moïse, et il fit des miracles devant le peuple.

And Aaron spoke all the words which Jehovah had spoken to Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.

31 Le peuple crut; il se réjouit de ce que le Seigneur avait visité les fils d'Israël, et vu leur oppression; et le peuple, s'étant prosterné, adora.

And the people believed. And when they heard that Jehovah had visited the sons of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.
