Exode 20
1 Alors, le Seigneur prononça tous les discours qui suivent, et il dit:
Then God said this [to the Israeli people: ]
2 Je suis le Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t'ai tiré de la terre d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
“I am Yahweh God, the one you [worship]. I am the one who brought you out of Egypt. I am the one who freed you from being slaves [there].
3 Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux que moi.
[So] you must worship [only] me; you must not worship any other god.
4 Tu ne te feras pas d'idoles ni d'images d'aucune chose existant au ciel, sur la terre, sous la terre et dans les eaux.
You must not carve/make for yourselves any idol that represents anything in the sky or that is on the ground or that is in the water under the ground/earth.
5 Tu ne les adoreras point, tu ne les serviras pas; car je suis le Seigneur ton Dieu, Dieu jaloux, vengeant sur les enfants les péchés des pères, jusqu'à la troisième et à la quatrième génération de ceux qui me haïssent,
You must not bow down to any idol and worship it, because I am Yahweh God, and I (am very jealous/want you to worship me only). I will punish those who sin and hate me. I will punish not only them, but I will punish (their descendants, down to the third and fourth generation/their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
6 Et faisant miséricorde, pendant des milliers de générations, à ceux qui m'aiment et qui observent mes commandements.
But I will steadfastly love thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments (OR, I will love for thousands of generations.)
7 Tu ne prendras pas en vain le nom du Seigneur ton Dieu; car le Seigneur, ton Dieu, ne regardera point comme pur celui qui aura pris son nom en vain.
Do not use my name carelessly (OR, for wrong/evil purposes), because I am Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship], and I will certainly punish those who use my name for wrong/evil purposes [LIT].
8 Souviens-toi de sanctifier le jour du sabbat.
Do not forget that the seventh day [of every week] is mine, so dedicate those days to me.
9 Pendant six jours travaille et fais tous tes ouvrages.
There are six days each week for you to do all your work,
10 Mais le septième jour est le sabbat (repos) du Seigneur ton Dieu; tu ne feras aucune œuvre en ce jour-là: ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bœuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni le prosélyte demeurant avec toi.
but the seventh day is a day of rest, a day dedicated to me, Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship]. On that day you must not do any work. You and your sons and daughters and your male and female slaves must not work. You must not even force your livestock to work, and you must not allow foreigners to work, those who are living in your country.
11 Car, en six jours, le Seigneur a créé le ciel, et la terre, et la mer, et tout ce qu'ils contiennent, et il s'est reposé le septième jour; c'est pourquoi Dieu a béni le septième jour, et l’a sanctifié.
I, Yahweh, created the sky, the earth, the ocean, and everything that is in them, in six days. Then I stopped my work of creating everything, and rested on the seventh day. That is the reason that I, Yahweh, have blessed the rest day and set it apart [to be a sacred/special day].
12 Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tu sois heureux et que tu vives longtemps sur la terre fortunée que te donnera le Seigneur ton Dieu.
Honor/Respect your fathers and your mothers, in order that you may live a long time in the land that I, Yahweh God, will give you.
13 Tu ne seras point adultère.
Do not murder anyone.
14 Tu ne voleras point.
Do not (commit adultery/have sex with anyone other than your spouse).
15 Tu ne tueras point.
Do not steal anything.
16 Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
Do not falsely accuse anyone [of committing a crime].
17 Tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain; tu ne convoiteras point la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni une seule de ses bêtes, ni rien de ce qui est à ton prochain.
Do not (covet/desire to have) someone else’s house, someone else’s wife, someone else’s male or female slave, someone else’s livestock, someone else’s donkeys, or anything else that some other person owns.”
18 Tout le peuple entendait la voix et le son des trompettes, il voyait les lueurs et la montagne fumante; et, frappé de terreur, tout le peuple se tenait au loin.
When the people heard the thunder and saw the lightning, and when they heard the sound of the trumpet and saw the smoke on the mountain, they were afraid and trembled. They stood at a distance,
19 Et ils dirent à Moise, parle-nous, toi; que le Seigneur cesse de nous parler, de peur que nous ne mourions.
and said to Moses/me, “If you speak to us, we will listen. But do not let God speak any more to us. [We are afraid that] if he speaks [any more] to us, we will die.”
20 Et Moïse leur répondit: Rassurez-vous; c'est pour vous éprouver que Dieu est venu, afin que la crainte de Dieu soit en vous, et que vous ne péchiez pas.
Moses/I replied, “Do not be afraid! God has come to determine/test [how you will behave]. He wants you to revere him, and to not sin.”
21 Tandis que le peuple d'Israël se tenait au loin, Moïse entra dans la nuée sombre où était Dieu.
Then, as the people [watched from] a distance, Moses/I went close to the black cloud where God was.
22 Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Voici ce que tu diras à la maison de Jacob, ce que tu déclareras aux fils d'Israël: Vous avez vu vous-mêmes que du ciel je vous ai parlé;
Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Say this to the Israeli people: ‘You have heard how I, Yahweh, have spoken to you from heaven. I told you that you must not make any idols of silver or gold [that you will worship instead] of me.
23 Vous ne vous ferez pas de dieux d'argent, vous ne ferez point pour vous de dieux d'or.
24 Vous ferez un autel de terre, et vous y sacrifierez vos holocaustes et vos hosties pacifiques, brebis ou génisses, en tout lieu où j'imposerai mon nom; et je viendrai vers toi, et je te bénirai.
Make for me an altar from dirt. Sacrifice on it the animals that you will burn completely. Also sacrifice on it the animals that you will not burn completely, to maintain fellowship with me. Worship me [MTY] in any place that I choose for you to honor/worship me; and if you do that, I will come to you and bless you.
25 Et, si tu me bâtis un autel en pierres, tu les emploieras sans les tailler, car tu les profanerais en portant le ciseau sur elles.
If you make for me an altar from stones, do not make it from stones that you have cut [to make them look nice], because you will make the altar unsuitable for [worshiping] me if you use tools to cut the stones.
26 Tu ne monteras pas par des degrés à mon autel, de peur qu'après de l'autel tu ne sois découvert indécemment.
Do not make an altar that has steps in front of it, because if you do that, [people] could see your naked [buttocks] as you go up the steps.’”
