Exode 18

1 Cependant, Jéthro, prêtre de Madian, beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël avait fait en faveur de son peuple; car le Seigneur avait tiré Israël de l'Égypte.

And when Jethro, the priest of Midian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all that God had done for Moses, and for his people Israel, and that the Lord had led Israel away from Egypt,

2 Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, avait reçu Séphora, femme de Moïse, après la séparation,

he brought Zipporah, the wife of Moses, whom he was to return to him,

3 Ainsi que ses deux fils, l'un, qu'à sa naissance il nomma Gersam, parce que, dit-il, je suis passager en une contrée étrangère,

and her two sons, of whom one was called Gershom, (for his father said, “I have been a newcomer in a foreign land,”)

4 L'autre, qu'il nomma Eliézer, parce que, dit-il, Dieu est mon auxiliaire, et il m'a tiré des mains du Pharaon.

and the other in truth was Eliezer, (“For the God of my father,” he said, “is my helper, and has rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.”)

5 Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, les fils de celui-ci et sa femme, partirent donc pour l'aller trouver dans le désert, où il campait sur la montagne du Seigneur.

And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the desert, where he was encamped next to the mountain of God.

6 Et l'on vint dire à Moïse: Voilà que ton beau-père Jéthro arrive avec ta femme et tes deux fils.

And he sent word to Moses, saying: “I, Jethro, your kinsman, have come to you, with your wife, and your two sons with her.”

7 Moïse alla à la rencontre de son beau-père; il se prosterna devant lui, et il le baisa; après qu'ils se furent tous embrassés, il les conduisit sous sa tente.

And going out to meet his kinsman, he reverenced and kissed him. And they saluted each other with peaceful words. And when he had arrived at the tent,

8 Là, Moïse raconta à son beau-père, tout ce que le Seigneur avait fait aux Égyptiens et à Pharaon, à cause d'Israël, ainsi que toutes ses souffrances sur la route, depuis que le Seigneur les avait tirés d'Égypte.

Moses explained to his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians on behalf of Israel, and all the hardships which had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had freed them.

9 Jéthro fut saisi d'admiration pour les bienfaits de Dieu en faveur du peuple, et parce qu’il l’avait tiré des mains des Égyptiens, et des mains du Pharaon.

And Jethro was gladdened over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, because he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians.

10 Et Jéthro dit: Béni soit le Seigneur, parce qu'il a tiré Israël des mains des Égyptiens, et des mans du Pharaon.

And he said: “Blessed is the Lord, who has freed his people from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh; he has rescued his people from the hand of Egypt.

11 Je reconnais aujourd'hui à ce qui est advenu, quand les Égyptiens vous ont poursuivis, que le Seigneur est grand au-dessus de tous les dieux.

Now I know that the great Lord is above all gods. This is why they acted arrogantly against them.”

12 Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, fit des holocaustes et des sacrifices à Dieu. Or, Aaron et tous les anciens d'Israël survinrent pour manger des pains devant le Seigneur, avec le beau-père de Moïse.

And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, offered holocausts and sacrifices to God. And Aaron arrived with all the elders of Israel, in order to eat bread with him in the sight of God.

13 À l'aurore, Moïse s'assit pour juger le peuple, et la multitude comparut devant Moïse, depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.

Then, the next day, Moses sat down in order to judge the people, and they stood beside Moses from morning, even until evening.

14 Jéthro, ayant vu tout ce qu'il faisait en faveur du peuple, dit: Que fais-tu? Pourquoi sièges-tu seul, quand le peuple comparait devant toi, depuis le matin jusqu'au soir?

And when, of course, his kinsman saw all that he did among the people, he said: “What is this that you do among the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand before you, from morning, even until evening?”

15 Moïse répondit à son beau-père: Tout le peuple vient à moi, demander jugement au nom du Seigneur.

And Moses answered him: “The people come to me seeking the verdict of God.

16 Quand une contestation s'élève entre eux, ils viennent à moi, je juge chacun, et je leur rappelle les commandements de Dieu et sa loi.

And when any kind of dispute occurs among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to reveal the precepts of God and of his laws.”

17 Et le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: Tu n'agis pas bien en cette œuvre.

But he said, “This is not good, what you are doing.

18 Tu consumeras toi et ton peuple par une fatigue insoutenable; trop pesante est cette œuvre pour toi, et tu ne pourras la faire seul.

You will be consumed by foolish efforts, both you and this people who are with you. The task is beyond your strength; you will not be able bear it alone.

19 Ecoute-moi donc; je te donnerai un conseil, et Dieu sera avec toi; sois pour le peuple l'interprète des choses de Dieu, et rapporte à Dieu ses paroles.

But listen to my words and counsels, and then God will be with you. Be available to the people in that which pertains to God, so as to refer what they say to him,

20 Tu leur déclareras les ordres de Dieu et sa loi tu leur indiqueras les voies en lesquelles ils doivent marcher, et les œuvres qu'ils auront à faire.

and to reveal to the people the ceremonies, and the rituals of worship, and the way by which they should progress, and the work that they should do.

21 Cependant, choisis parmi le peuple, pour te les associer, des hommes forts et pieux, des hommes justes, haïssant l'orgueil; mets à la tête du peuple des chefs de mille hommes, des chefs de cent, des chefs de cinquante et des chefs de dix.

Then provide, from all of the people, men capable and fearing God, in whom there is truth and who hate avarice, and appoint from them tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens,

22 Qu'ils jugent le peuple à toute heure, qu'ils te rapportent toute affaire d'importance, qu'ils jugent eux-mêmes les causes les plus faciles; ils allégeront ainsi ton labeur en le partageant.

who may judge the people at all times. Then, when anything greater will have occurred, they may refer it to you, and let them judge the lesser matters only. And so it may be lighter for you, the burden being divided among others.

23 Si tu exécutes ce projet, Dieu te fortifiera et tu pourras tenir bon, et ce peuple s'en ira en paix au lieu où il doit aller.

If you will do this, you will fulfill the orders of God, and you will be able to uphold his precepts. And this entire people will return to their places in peace.”

24 Moïse fut docile au conseil de son beau-père, et il exécuta ce qu'il lui avait dit.

Having heard this, Moses did everything that he had suggested to him.

25 Moïse, parmi tous les fils d'Israël, choisit des hommes forts; il les mit à la tête du peuple: chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, chefs de dix.

And choosing virtuous men from all of Israel, he appointed them as leaders of the people: tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.

26 Ceux-ci jugèrent le peuple à toute heure; ils rapportèrent à Moïse toute affaire d'importance, et ils jugèrent eux-mêmes toute affaire facile.

And they judged the people at all times. But whatever was more serious, they referred to him, and they judged easier matters only.

27 Alors, Moïse congédia son beau-père, et celui-ci retourna dans son pays.

And he dismissed his kinsman, who, turning back, went to his own land.
