Esther 1
1 Il advint durant les jours d'Artaxerxès, qui régnait depuis l'Inde sur cent vingt-sept contrées:
Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this [is] Ahasuerus who reigned from India even to Cush, [over] a hundred and seven and twenty provinces: )
2 En ces jours-là, tandis qu'il trônait en la ville de Suse,
[That] in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which [was] in Shushan the palace,
3 La troisième année de son règne, il advint qu'il fit un festin à ses amis et au reste des nations, et aux hommes considérables des Perses et des Mèdes, et aux premiers des satrapes.
In the third year of his reign, he made a feast to all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, [being] before him:
4 Et ensuite, après leur avoir montré les richesses de son royaume, et la splendeur de ses joies et de ses trésors, pendant cent quatre-vingts jours,
When he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent majesty many days, [even] a hundred and eighty days.
5 Lorsque les jours de ses noces furent remplis, il fit pendant six jours aux nations qui se trouvaient à Suse un festin dans le parvis du palais,
And when these days had expired, the king made a feast for all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both for great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
6 Orné de voiles du lin le plus fin, et de gaze tendue par des cordons de lin et de pourpre sur des socles d'or et d'argent, et sur des colonnes de marbre blanc et de pierre. Les lits, d'argent et d'or, étaient posés sur des mosaïques d'émeraudes, de nacre et de marbre blanc; et les couvertures transparentes, diversement brodées, étaient encadrées de feuilles de roses.
[Where were] white, green, and blue [hangings], fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds [were of] gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black marble.
7 Les coupes étaient d'argent et d'or, et il y avait une petite coupe en diamant évaluée trente mille talents; on les remplissait de vin abondant et doux, le même que le roi buvait.
And they gave [them] drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another, ) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
8 Et le repas ne se fit pas selon la loi établie; le roi l'avait ainsi voulu, et il avait ordonné à ses économes de se conformer à ses propres désirs et à ceux de ses convives.
And the drinking [was] according to the law; none constrained: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.
9 Et Vasthi, la reine, fit un festin pour les femmes dans l'intérieur du palais où résidait le roi Artaxerxès.
Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women [in] the royal house which [belonged] to king Ahasuerus.
10 Le septième jour, le roi, étant en belle humeur, dit à Aman, à Bazan, à Tharra, à Barazi, à Zatholtha, à Abataza et à Tharaba, les sept eunuques attachés à sa personne,
On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11 De lui amener la reine pour qu'il la couronnât, qu'il posât sur sa tête le diadème, et qu'il la montrât dans sa beauté aux chefs et aux nations; car elle était belle.
To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the people and the princes her beauty: for she [was] fair to look on.
12 Mais la reine Vasthi refusa de suivre les eunuques, et le roi en fut affligé, et il se mit en colère.
But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by [his] chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13 Et il dit à ses amis: Voici ce qu'a dit la reine, faites donc à ce sujet loi et jugement.
Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times, (for so [was] the king's manner towards all that knew law and judgment:
14 Et Arcesée, Sarsathée et Maliséar, princes des Perses et des Mèdes, ceux qui se tenaient près du roi, et qui s'asseyaient les premiers après lui, s'approchèrent.
And the next to him [was] Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, [and] Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king's face, [and] who sat the first in the kingdom; )
15 Et ils lui firent connaître ce que selon la loi il était à propos de faire à la reine Vasthi, parce qu'elle n'avait point fait ce que lui avait commandé le roi par ses eunuques.
What shall we do to the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16 Et Muchée dit au roi et aux princes: Vasthi, la reine, n'a pas nui au roi seul, mais aussi à tous les princes et aux grands officiers du roi.
And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that [are] in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17 Et il leur dit les paroles de la reine, et comme elle avait contredit le roi, et continuant: De même, ajouta-t-il, qu'elle a contredit le roi Artaxerxès,
For [this] deed of the queen will come abroad to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18 Les autres femmes des Perses et des Mèdes du premier rang, apprenant ce qu'elle a dit au roi, oseront à l'avenir ne point honorer leurs époux.
[Likewise] will the ladies of Persia and Media say this day to all the king's princes, who have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus [will there arise] too much contempt and wrath.
19 Si donc le roi le juge à propos, qu'il rende un édit, qu'il l'écrive selon la loi des Perses et des Mèdes, que l'on ne puisse y déroger; qu'il défende à la reine de s'approcher désormais de sa personne, et que le roi donne le diadème royal à une femme meilleure qu'elle;
If it pleaseth the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another that is better than she.
20 Et que l'édit qu'aura rendu le roi soit publié en tout son royaume. Alors, toutes les femmes mettront leurs soins à honorer leurs époux, depuis l'indigent jusqu'au riche.
And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great, ) all the wives will give to their husbands honor, both to great and small.
21 Or, ce conseil plut au roi et aux princes, et le roi fit comme avait dit Muchée.
And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22 Et il envoya dans toutes les provinces de son royaume l'édit traduit en leurs diverses langues, afin qu'en toute demeure on eût crainte.
For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing of it, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that [it] should be published according to the language of every people.
