Ecclésiaste 1
1 Paroles de l'Ecclésiaste, fils de David, roi d'Israël en Jérusalem.
The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.
2 Vanités des vanités, dit Ecclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.
Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes vanity of vanities, and all is vanity.
3 Que reste-t-il à l'homme de tout le labeur dont il se consume sous le soleil?
What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun?
4 Une génération passe, et une génération vient, et la terre demeure toujours immobile.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever.
5 Et le soleil se lève, et le soleil se couche; il se retire en son lieu, et là, se levant,
The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again,
6 il chemine vers le midi, puis il tourne au nord; le souffle du vent va tournant, tournant sans cesse, et toujours il recommence ses circuits.
Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits.
7 Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n'en est pas remplie; du lieu où coulent les fleuves, ils reviennent pour couler encore.
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again.
8 Toutes choses sont laborieuses, nul homme ne pourra les expliquer; et l'œil ne se lassera pas de voir, et l'oreille ne se rassasiera pas d'entendre.
All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing.
9 Qu'est-ce que le passé? La même chose que l'avenir; et qu'a-t-on fait? Ce que l'on fera toujours.
What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done.
10 Il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil; qui pourra dire: Voyez, ceci est nouveau? Mais cette chose a déjà été dans les siècles qui ont passé avant nous.
Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us.
11 Mais on a perdu la mémoire des premiers, et ceux de la fin n'auront point mémoire de ceux qui naîtront d'ici à la fin.
There is no remembrance of former things: nor indeed of those things which hereafter are to come, shall there be any remembrance with them that shall be in the latter end.
12 Moi, l'Ecclésiaste, j'ai régné sur Israël en Jérusalem.
I Ecclesiastes was king over Israel in Jerusalem,
13 Et j'ai appliqué mon cœur à chercher et à observer avec sagesse tout ce qui existe sous le ciel; car Dieu a donné aux fils des hommes cette mauvaise inquiétude, pour qu'ils s'inquiètent en elle.
And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.
14 J'ai vu toutes les œuvres qui ont été faites sous le soleil, et voilà que toutes étaient vanité et présomption d'esprit.
I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
15 On ne peut embellir les pervers; leurs abaissement sont innombrables.
The perverse are hard to be corrected, and the number of fools is infinite.
16 Pour moi, j'ai dit en mon cœur: Voilà que je suis devenu grand, et que j'ai acquis plus de sagesse qu'aucun de ceux qui, avant moi, ont été en Jérusalem; j'ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse et la science.
I have spoken in my heart, saying: Behold I am become great, and have gone beyond all in wisdom, that were before me in Jerusalem: and my mind hath contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.
17 Et mon cœur a beaucoup vu: sagesse, science, paraboles, interprétation; et j'ai connu que cela même était présomption d'esprit.
And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,
18 Car dans une grande sagesse est une grande science; et qui accroît sa science, accroît son affliction.
Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.
