Ecclésiaste 8
1 Qui connaît les raisons véritables? Qui sait la solution des choses? La sagesse de l'homme se reflète sur son visage; le front de l'impudent inspire la haine.
Who [is] as the wise [man]? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 Observe le commandement du roi, et cela, à cause de la parole que Dieu a jurée.
I [counsel thee] to keep the king's commandment, and [that] in regard of the oath of God.
3 Ne te hâte pas de t'éloigner de Sa face; ne tiens pas à la parole si elle est coupable: car il fera tout ce Qu'il voudra;
Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatever pleaseth him.
4 comme fait un roi puissant; et qui pourra lui dire: Qu'as-tu fait?
Where the word of a king [is], [there is] power: and who may say to him, what doest thou?
5 Celui qui observe les commandements ne connaîtra pas le mal, le cœur du sage sait le temps du jugement de Dieu.
He who keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 Car pour toutes choses il y a temps et jugement, et l'homme en sait beaucoup sur lui-même.
Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man [is] great upon him.
7 Mais nul ne sait ce qui doit arriver: que sera-ce? Qui le lui fera connaître?
For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 Il n'est point d'homme qui ait pouvoir sur la vie, qui puisse la retenir; il n'a pas plus de pouvoir sur le jour de la mort; et il n'est point pour lui de trêve au jour de la bataille, et l'impiété ne sauvera pas ceux qui l'aiment.
[There is] no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither [hath he] power in the day of death: and [there is] no discharge in [that] war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 Et j'ai vu toutes ces choses, et j'ai appliqué mon cœur à toute œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil; et j'ai vu les choses où l'homme a pris pouvoir sur l'homme, pour l'affliger.
All this have I seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: [there is] a time in which one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 Et j'ai vu des impies conduits à la sépulture, au sortir du lieu saint, et ils étaient allés dans leur voie, et ils avaient été loués dans la ville, parce qu'ils avaient ainsi fait; et cela encore est vanité.
And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this [is] also vanity.
11 Car, parce que ceux qui font le mal ne sont point repris incontinent, le cœur des fils des hommes s'enhardit par leur exemple à mal faire.
Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 Celui qui une fois a péché, a fait le mal depuis lors, et longtemps. Et moi je sais que Dieu est bon pour ceux qui craignent en Sa présence.
Though a sinner doeth evil a hundred times, and his [days] are prolonged, yet surely I know that it will be well with them that fear God, who fear before him:
13 Mais le bonheur ne sera pas pour l'impie, et il n'aura pas de longs jours; ils passeront comme l'ombre, parce qu'il ne craint pas la face de Dieu.
But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong [his] days, [which are] as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 Voici encore une vanité qui existe sur la terre: il est des justes à qui il arrive comme à l'œuvre des impies; il est des impies à qui il arrive comme à l'œuvre des justes. Et cela, ai-je dit, est encore vanité.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are just [men], to whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked [men], to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also [is] vanity.
15 Et c'est pourquoi (dit l'impie) j'ai loué toutes les joies; car il n'est rien de meilleur pour l'homme sous le soleil, sinon de manger, de boire et de se réjouir. Et cela seul lui restera de tout le labeur qu'il fait durant les jours de la vie que Dieu lui a données sous le soleil.
Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labor the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 Dans ces pensées, j'ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse, et à voir l'inquiétude qui naît sur la terre; car la nuit comme le jour, il n'est personne qui de ses yeux voie le sommeil.
When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also [there is that] neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes: )
17 Et j'ai vu toutes les œuvres de Dieu, et j'ai vu que l'homme ne pourra jamais s'expliquer l'œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil. Quelque fatigue qu'il se donne pour chercher, il ne la trouvera pas et, quelque science même que le sage croie avoir, il ne pourra la trouver.
Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man may labor to seek [it] out, yet he shall not find [it]; yes further; though a wise [man] thinketh to know [it], yet shall he not be able to find [it].
