1 Voici les paroles que Moïse dit à tout Israël au delà du Jourdain, dans le désert situé à l'Occident près de la mer Rouge, entre Pharan-Tophel, Lobon, Aulon et Catachryse
These are the words which Moses [Drawn out] spoke to all Israel [God prevails] beyond the Jordan [Descender] in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suf, between Paran, Tophel, Laban [White], Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2 (Il y a onze journées de marche d'Horeb à Cadès-Barné, dans la montagne de Séir.)
It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb [Desert] by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea [Consecrated Son-inconstant].
3 En la quarantième année, le dixième mois, le premier jour de la lune, Moïse parla à tous les fils d'Israël, sur tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait prescrit pour eux.
In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month Shevat ·Staff / Rod / Royal scepter·, on the first day of the month, Moses [Drawn out] spoke to the children of Israel [God prevails], according to all that Adonai had given Moses [Drawn out], words of enjoinings to them;
4 Après avoir défait Sehon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui résidait en Esebon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui demeurait en Astaroth et Edraï;
after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.
5 Dans la contrée au delà du Jourdain, en la terre de Moab, Moïse commença d'expliquer la loi de Dieu, disant:
Beyond the Jordan [Descender], in the land of Moab [From father], Moses [Drawn out] began to declare this Torah ·Teaching·, saying,
6 Le Seigneur à Horeb vous a parlé, et il vous a dit: C'est assez demeurer en cette montagne;
“Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] spoke to us in Horeb [Desert], saying, ‘You have lived long enough at this mountain.
7 Mettez-vous en marche, partez, traversez les montagnes des Amorrhéens; allez chez tous ceux qui, autour d'Araba, habitent la région du midi; entrez en la contrée maritime des Chananéens; allez sur l'Anti-Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve, jusqu'au fleuve de l'Euphrate.
Turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], and to all the places near there, in the Arabah, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanites [Descendants of Humbled], and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates [Fruitful].
8 Voyez: le Seigneur vous a donné cette terre qui est devant vous, entrez- y; partagez l'héritage qu'il a promis à vos pères Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, pour eux et leur postérité.
Behold, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which Adonai swore to your fathers, to Abraham [Father of a multitude], to Isaac [Laughter], and to Jacob [Supplanter], to give to them and to their offspring after them.’”
9 En ce temps-là, je vous ai parlé, disant: Je ne pourrai seul vous conduire.
I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I am not able to bear you myself alone.
10 Le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a multipliés, et voilà que vous êtes aujourd'hui nombreux comme les étoiles du ciel.
Adonai your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.
11 Que le Seigneur Dieu de vos pères continue et vous multiplie mille fois plus encore; et qu'il vous bénisse comme il vous l'a promis.
Adonai, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you!
12 Mais comment pourrai-je seul soutenir le fardeau de vos importunités et de vos contradictions?
How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?
13 Choisissez vous-mêmes des hommes sages, expérimentés et intelligents, pris dans vos tribus, et je les mettrai à votre tête, et ils seront vos chefs.
Take wise men of understanding and well known according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.”
14 Et vous m'avez répondu: Il est bon d'exécuter la chose que tu as dite.
You answered me, and said, “The thing which you have spoken is good to do.”
15 Et j'ai pris parmi vous des hommes expérimentés, sages, intelligents, et je les ai institués chefs de mille hommes, chefs de cinquante hommes, chefs de dix hommes, pour vous commander, et pour être vos scribes et vos juges.
So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.
16 Et, en ce temps-là, j'ai donné mes ordres à vos juges, disant: Ecoutez avec attention vos frères, et jugez équitablement, entre un homme et son frère ou son prosélyte.
I enjoined your judges at that time, saying, “Sh'ma ·Hear obey· cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.
17 Pour juger tu ne feras pas acception des personnes; tu jugeras le grand comme le petit, tu ne craindras la présence d'aucun homme, car le jugement vient de Dieu; et si vous trouvez la cause difficile, apportez-la-moi, et je l'entendrai.
You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall sh'ma ·hear obey· the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will sh'ma ·hear obey· it.”
18 En ce temps-là, je vous ai prescrit tous les commandements que vous exécuterez.
I enjoined you at that time all the things which you should do.
19 Et nous sommes partis d'Horeb, et nous avons parcouru tout ce grand et redoutable désert; nous avons suivi la route que vous avez vue, jusqu'aux montagnes des Amorrhéens, comme nous l'avait prescrit le Seigneur notre Dieu, et nous sommes arrivés à Cadès-Barné.
We traveled from Horeb [Desert], and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], as Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] enjoined us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea [Consecrated Son-inconstant].
20 Et je vous ai dit: Vous voici aux montagnes des Amorrhéens, le Seigneur Dieu vous les donne.
I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], which Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] gives to us.
21 Voyez: le Seigneur votre Dieu vous donne la terre qui est devant vous; montez-y, partagez-la, comme le Seigneur l'a dit à vos pères; n'ayez point de crainte et point de faiblesse.
Behold, Adonai your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Adonai, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”
22 Alors, vous m'avez entouré et vous ayez dit: Envoyons devant nous des hommes, qu'ils explorent cette terre, qu'ils reviennent nous dire la route que nous devons prendre, et les villes ou nous devons entrer.
You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”
23 Ce discours me fut agréable, et je pris parmi vous douze hommes, un homme par tribu.
The thing pleased me well. I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe.
24 Et ils partirent, s'engagèrent dans les montagnes, allèrent jusqu'au vallon de la Grappe, et l'explorèrent.
They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.
25 Et ils prirent en leurs mains des fruits de la terre, et ils vous les rapportèrent, disant: C'est une bonne terre que le Seigneur nous donne.
They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, “It is a good land which Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] gives to us.”
26 Mais vous refusâtes d'y monter; vous n'eûtes point foi en la parole du Seigneur votre Dieu.
Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the order of Adonai your God.
27 Et, murmurant sous vos tentes, vous dites: C'est parce que le Seigneur nous hait qu'il nous a tirés de l'Egypte, pour nous livrer aux Amorrhéens et pour que nous soyons exterminés.
You murmured in your tents, and said, “Because Adonai hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt [Abode of slavery], to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], to destroy us.
28 Où allons-nous? Vos frères vous ont perverti le cœur, disant: Nous avons vu là une nation grande et nombreuse, plus puissante que nous, et de fortes murailles s'élevant jusqu'au ciel, et des hommes fils des géants.
Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”
29 Et je vous dis: Ne vous effrayez pas; ne les craignez point.
Then I said to you, “Don’t dread, neither be afraid of them.
30 Le Seigneur votre Dieu marche à votre tête, il combattra pour vous, il fera pour vous selon tout ce qu'il a fait en la terre d'Egypte.
Adonai your God who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt [Abode of slavery] before your eyes,
31 Et dans ce désert que vous avez vu, durant cette marche aux monts des Amorrhéens, le Seigneur ton Dieu t'a porté sur son sein, comme jamais homme n'a porté son enfant, en toute voie que tu as parcourue, jusqu'à ton arrivée à ce lieu;
and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Adonai your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”
32 Cependant, vous n'avez point eu foi à cette parole du Seigneur votre Dieu,
Yet in this thing you didn’t trust Adonai your God,
33 Qui vous précède en ce voyage pour vous choisir chaque station, vous guidant le jour par une nuée, et la nuit par une colonne de feu.
who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.
34 Et le Seigneur, ayant ouï la rumeur de vos paroles, s'irrita, et dit avec serment:
Adonai sh'ma ·heard obeyed· the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,
35 Nul de ces hommes ne verra cette contrée que j'ai promise à leurs pères,
“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,
36 Hormis Caleb, fils de Jéphoné; celui-ci la verra, et je lui donnerai le champ sur lequel il a marché, pour lui et ses fils, parce qu'il s'est attaché aux choses du Seigneur.
except Caleb [Dog] the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it. I will give the land that he has trodden on to him, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Adonai.”
37 Et à cause de vous, le Seigneur s'irrita contre moi, et il dit: Toi non plus, tu n'entreras pas en la terre promise.
Also Adonai was angry with me for your sakes, saying, “You also shall not go in there.
38 Josué, fils de Nau, qui se tient auprès de toi, y entrera: fortifie-le, parce que c'est lui qui en fera le partage à Israël.
Joshua [Yah Salvation] the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel [God prevails] to inherit it.
39 Et tous les jeunes enfants qui ne savent pas aujourd'hui discerner le bien et le mal, y entreront; c'est à ceux-là que je la donnerai, et ils se la partageront.
Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be captured or killed, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and I will give it to, and they shall possess it.
40 Quant à vous, rebroussez chemin; allez dresser vos tentes dans le désert, et reprenez le chemin de la mer Rouge.
But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Sea of Suf [Reed Sea].”
41 Et vous me répondîtes: Nous avons péché devant le Seigneur notre Dieu, partons donc, et combattons comme le Seigneur notre Dieu nous l'a prescrit. Chacun prit donc ses armes de guerre, et vous, étant rassemblés, vous montâtes sur la montagne.
Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned ·deviated (from the standard goal)· against Adonai, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] enjoined us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.
42 Et le Seigneur me dit: Dis-leur: Si vous ne voulez être broyés par vos ennemis, ne montez pas, ne livrez pas bataille; car je ne suis point avec vous.
Adonai said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.’”
43 Et je vous répétai ces paroles, et vous ne m'écoutâtes point, vous n'obéîtes point au Seigneur, et, passant outre avec violence, vous montâtes sur la montagne,
So I spoke to you, and you didn’t sh'ma ·hear obey·; but you rebelled against the order of Adonai, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.
44 Et l'Amorrhéen habitant ces montagnes sortit à votre rencontre, et il vous poursuivit comme font les abeilles, et ils vous taillèrent en pièces de Séir à Horma.
The Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.
45 Et vous étant ralliés, vous pleurâtes devant le Seigneur votre Dieu; mais le Seigneur n'écouta pas vos cris, et il ne fit point attention à vous.
You made teshuvah ·complete return· and wept before Adonai; but Adonai didn’t sh'ma ·hear obey· unto your voice, nor turn his ear to you.
46 Puis, vous demeurâtes en Cadès-Barné bien des jours, vous savez les jours que vous y êtes restés.
So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.
